My Thorn In The Flesh

Posted by Job on May 15, 2009

2 Corinthians 12:7
And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

Much has been made of the mystery of the precise nature or identity of Paul’s thorn in the flesh. Theories include bad eyesight, frequent illness, guilt over crimes against the church, and even (according to the depraved mind of one utterly wretched school of thought) repressed homosexual urges. Well, let me share my own.

I have a very vivid imagination, a mind that is prone to wandering, and difficulty concentrating or applying my thoughts to things for any length of time or at any depth, especially if they are good things. As a result, I frequently find my thinking assaulted with a great many vile thoughts including but not limited to images of sin, blasphemies against our Lord Jesus Christ, and attitudes of cynicism, disrespect and rebellion. Almost all of it is the direct result of my memory of all of the wretched abominations that I acquired through my voracious consumption of television, movies, music, magazines, talk radio and the Internet. It is almost as if I have some sort of powerful relational database where practically the instant that my mind conceives of a thought – whether it be neutral, innocent, or holy – it brings to my thinking some blasphemous thought or cynical emotion, and this issue is particularly intense and grievous when I am attempting to read my Bible or pray.

This morning, after enduring yet another episode of this sinful mind activity while driving, I despaired and cried out to God to remove this evil from me. I discerned while praying about the matter that these attacks on my mind would cease when I reached heaven, and until that blessed event occurs, it was actually good for my own sake that they remained because they

A) remind me of my need to rely totally upon the grace of Jesus Christ and His work on the cross for my salvation

B) remind me of the hideously grotesque nature of my sinful former life for the sake of bearing witness and testimony of others, and to prevent me from thinking that I was already a basically good, decent moral person living a productive useful existence that the grace of Jesus Christ only needed to add to

C) give me added incentive to avoid defiling myself with sin by consuming still more “entertainment” – especially that which appears to be merely harmless idle vanities but are actually a deception and a snare – that actually is chock full of rebellion, cynicism, and much careless swearings and casual breaking of the third of the ten commandments (do not take the Name of the Lord in vain) that serves no productive purpose in my life whatsoever but will in the future find itself corrupting my thoughts

D) keeps me from thinking that I am perfect or at least very nearly there, the result of which would be – owing to a most regrettable character flaw and temptation that lurks within – my becoming extremely vain, prideful, self – righteous, self – satisfied, and lazy

E) allows me to identify with, have compassion for, and motivates me with a strong desire to help those that are in bondage to sin and death as I was not so very long ago.

After that word of truth came into my heart and mind, I immediately remembered Paul’s writing about his thorn in the flesh – and as if for the first time in my life – understood, and my despair and guilt turned to joy and victory! So, my prayer went from begging God to deliver me from these thoughts and making them stop to one of asking God to work this within me 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 my behalf:

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

Even so, come Lord Jesus Christ! Praise Jesus Christ for everlasting life, life and life more abundantly, His grace and mercy towards the meek, the weak, and wretched sinners, and for the victory over sin and death that comes through His Name, available to us by the emptying Himself of life and glory on the cross and reclaiming them back when He rose from the dead! Praise be to God!

Scriptural Evidence That Pope Benedict Is Wrong

Posted by Job on October 2, 2008

Another good one from Fancied Freedom!

Pope is sadly mistaken

As a former Catholic, I can attest to the fact that a statement made by Pope Benedict XVI claiming that other Christian churches are not true churches is completely inaccurate.

In a statement approved by the Pope, the Vatican asserted that Christ established only one church (being the Roman Catholic Church) and the other communities (Protestant churches) “could not be called churches” because they don’t have apostolic succession, or the ability to trace their bishops back to Jesus’ original apostles.

Not only that but the document also claims that the Catholic Church “has the fullness of the means of salvation.”

Let me correct a few things:

There is only one name under heaven by which we can be saved – that is Jesus Christ. (see Acts 4:12) Not the Catholic Church, not a pope, not a priest. The one and only High Priest, Christ.

Ephesians 5:23 says that Jesus Christ is the HEAD of the church. The church is the body of believers – the saints who have been called out according to God’s purpose. CHRIST is the head of the church – not a pope.

Despite these outlandish claims, I will pray for Catholics, most of whom are deceived, as I once was. However, the true God of the Bible was able to use my former Catholicism to show me the right path of life.

The Spirit of Truth Set Me Free From the False Anointing

Posted by Job on July 11, 2008

This is very similar to my On Needing That Anointing Christianity

From Soli Deo Gloria:

The Spirit of Truth Set Me Free From the False Anointing

Powerful testimony…

by Chris Lawson

Before I became a Christian, I was overcome by a powerful occult experience that nearly led to my death in a California desert.  Two years later, as a new, yet undiscerning Christian, I had an equally powerful occult experience – only this time it was in a hyper-faith Christian church.  At the whim and amped up touch of a so-called “anointed”, Latter-Rain, Joel’s Army prophet, I experienced full force what many spiritual seekers today call “the anointing”.   But what anointing was this and what on earth was “Joel’s Army”?   Read in context the entire book of Joel had nothing to do with what this preacher was preaching!

What I experienced years ago in the world of occult deception and Christian cultism is what people around the world call Holy Laughter, or divine laughter.   Also known as Laughter Yoga, Shakti-pat, ‘the force’, Kundalini awakening, Ki, drunk on the divine, etc., this power is being “transferred” through false prophets such as Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland, Todd Bentley and many others via – blowing, waving arms, laying on of hands, etc.

What countless people fail to realize is that this so-called “anointing” is not from the God of the Bible, but instead is a very real, very dangerous, and very powerful occult manifestation that can produce deadly results

Gospel For Asia: New India Believer Turns Successful Islands Evangelist!

Posted by Job on January 29, 2008

Giri, a new believer in West Bengal, brought more than 100 people to a saving knowledge of Jesus through his testimony. Read how the Lord used this believer to pave the way for Gospel for Asia missionaries to disciple the people.

I think you’ll agree with me when I say it is a blessing to hear how Asian believers
are so faithfully sharing the Gospel. They are excited because the Lord
has transformed their lives.

Dashing along the waves in a small motorboat, Rasul Layak, Gospel
for Asia’s island ministry leader in West Bengal, India, traveled to
meet a small group of local believers for a prayer meeting. When he
stepped onto the shore he was shocked: There stood Giri Banke with 150
believers to greet him.

Giri, a criminal investigator, had received the love of Christ in
his life and was faithfully following the Lord, but Rasul had no idea
that Giri was involved in ministry as well. Since his transformation,
Giri had been sharing the Gospel in five surrounding villages, and many
people had come to Christ as a result.

Seeing that the number of believers had grown so large, Giri
realized they needed a full-time pastor to conduct worship services and
disciple the people. So he had called Rasul to come to a prayer meeting
to see the need for himself.

After the prayer meeting, Rasul went to visit Giri’s cousin, Priti
Rajat, who was also involved in outreach in a nearby area. She hosts
five prayer groups of about 50 people each who have recently come to
know the Lord through her witness. She also leads several women’s Bible
study groups.

As Rasul saw how the Lord was working through Giri and his family,
he knew it was time to send missionaries who could help minister to the
people’s long-term needs. When he returned home, he found three young
men who felt called to serve on the islands. They all had recently
graduated from GFA Bible colleges and were eager to begin ministry.

Gospel for Asia native missionaries provided relief for flood victims in West Bengal.

India Missionary Has Brought 800 To Christ So Far!

Posted by Job on November 8, 2007

When Arivaz was a child, his mother started holding church services in a small shed on their property. There were only a few people who worshipped there, but it was enough to upset other villagers. “These people jointly made a decision not to mingle with my mother, and they all agreed not to sell anything to her,” Arivaz says. “They warned they would do the same to anyone who followed her in her faith.”

Who is the ‘true’ God?

This was enough to put fear into the heart of the small group of Christians, who stopped going to the little church. But the villagers didn’t stop. “They pulled the little church down, and they beat my mother severely and commanded her not to talk about this Jesus to anybody,” Arivaz recalls. After a while, even he began to question the Christian faith in which he’d been raised. He disliked all the morals and rules he had to follow, especially when a girl at school began to receive first place for her work. But it slowly occurred to him that these feelings gave him no peace and left an empty spot in his heart. “I began searching through all the holy books—the Bible, Bhagavat Gita, and Kuran—for the ‘real’ or ‘true’ god,” Arivaz says. “I was captivated by the truth given in the Bible, and I came to know fully the true God is Jesus. I surrendered my life to Him and began living a new life.”

Surrender leads to thriving ministry

Now, 25 years later, Arivaz is following his mother’s example. He leads a church of 20 members, and uses Bibles and study materials from Bible League to reach others for Christ. “I have introduced Jesus to 800 people so far!” he rejoices.

North India Student Delivered From Demonic Attack

Posted by Job on October 31, 2007

Like many young men, Sursen had big hopes for his future. But while studying at an engineering college in North India, he suddenly began to experience attacks by evil spirits. Finally, he had to make a painful decision regarding his education . . . and, ultimately, his future.Read the rest of Sursen’s inspiring story.

Please take a moment to thank the Lord for what He is doing in Asia.

I am so grateful for you.

Yours for the unreached,

K.P. Yohannan Founder & President

Sursen was studying at an engineering college in North India, full of hope for the future. But it seemed that his dreams were over when he began experiencing attacks from evil spirits. These attacks interfered with his studies and daily functioning. Finally, Sursen was forced to make the difficult decision to return home.

Sursen’s parents, Thiphan and Elisaba, learned about a neighbor who was blessed with a child after Gospel for Asia missionary Khelaram prayed for them. With the help of this family, Sursen’s parents made contact with the missionary, asking him to pray for their son.

Pastor Rakesh urged them to bring Sursen to church the following Sunday. He prayed for the tormented young man and told the family about Jesus. As Thiphan and Elisaba listened to the pastor, hope rose up in their hearts, and they began to trust Jesus for their son’s restoration. After Khelaram prayed for Sursen, he began to feel some relief.

Every day for a week, Sursen and his family met with the pastor for prayer. Within a week’s time, Sursen received complete deliverance, and his whole family received Christ! Sursen is now back at college, happily continuing his studies. The rest of his family enjoys regularly attending the local GFA-related church, and they thank God for His deliverance upon their lives.

<!–As Thiphan and Elisaba listened to the pastor, hope rose up in their hearts, and they began to trust Jesus for their son’s restoration.–>The family requests prayer that they will continue to grow in the Lord Jesus and live for His glory.

Korean Born Christian Goes Home After Four Years In China Jail

Posted by Job on October 16, 2007

Original link: korean_born_christian_returns.php

To listen:

A Korean-American who spent four years in a Chinese prison says he’s thankful to the Lord that he was able to establish a secret escape route for North Korean refugees seeking freedom in South Korea.Steve Kim was involved in the furniture business and made frequent trips to China. There he frequently saw North Korean refugees who were so desperate that they had fled to the communist country because it was better than their homeland. Still, the refugees suffered horribly, so Kim raised funds to provide food and shelter for the people until they were healthy enough to travel to South Korea. Once in South Korea they would be granted automatic citizenship. Kim even provided them with a safe route to freedom through yet another communist country — Vietnam.

“God led me to meet a couple of Vietnamese people who can be my guide out of China to Vietnam, so since then I started to send the North Korean people through that route and it was very successful,” says Kim. But on September 23, 2003, Kim was arrested by Chinese authorities and imprisoned, until finally being released this year. During that four-year period, he was able to share the gospel. “Many people converted to Christians. But always I was struggling with the Chinese authorities because they do not let evangelism to them because they are always saying it’s against the law. But I never stopped even one single Sunday without having a service,” he says.

Kim says he is proud that even though he is not permitted to return to China, the escape route he created for North Korean refugees is still being used. “I’m very thankful [the route remains open],” he shares, “and whatever opportunity is given to me, then I will do my best because I know this is God’s job [for me].”

Praise God! 10 Ounce Baby Born At 21 Weeks Survives!

Posted by Job on February 20, 2007

There is one God, and He is wonderful, He is powerful. This baby was born October 24, 2006, and went home with her mother yesterday. The article says: ”

Amillia has experienced respiratory problems, a very mild brain hemorrhage and some digestive problems, but none of the health concerns are expected to pose long-term problems, her doctors said. “We can deal with lungs and things like that but, of course, the brain is the most important,” Dr. Paul Fassbach said Monday. “But her prognosis is excellent.”

Now, had this baby been born to our more progressive British friends across the pond, well just read this column on their euthanasia policy for very premature newborns, and decide for yourself. But hey, this is not time to engage in politics, just for me to worship and praise my God for the life of this child and the joy of her mother. In the Name of Yeshua HaMashiach, I give you praise and thanks for sparing and sustaining the life of this child from the thief who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I thank you for using this to give people who believe and call upon Your Name another reason for hope; another reason to rejoice; another reason to keep fighting. May this child and her mother and father be exceedingly blessed. May they know that You are the Lord and serve You for the rest of their lives. And Lord, I have not forgotten those whose children did not make it; whether they perished in the womb or shortly after birth, or whether they died young in incidents like this. Please, Lord Father YHVH, comfort the mothers and families of these children through their loss, trials, and grief, and may it not cause them to lose their faith, become bitter, or blame You or themselves. We are but mere people, we do not have all of the answers or solutions and cannot be the judge of fair and unfair, but You Alone do, for You Alone are God, and no matter what happens in this world we must submit ourselves to Your Authority, and we must carry on in Your Will. Lord, we look forward to the imminent return of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, so no longer will the young, vulnerable, and innocent be destroyed by violence, war, disease, famine, lust, environmental pollution, and senseless accidents. Until that day comes, please Lord use Your Mighty Hand and Your Spirit Ruach Hakadosh and the people that call upon Your Name to defend the children that are here, and comfort the families of those that are no longer here. In the Name of Yeshua HaMashiach, Amen.
