Let Him In By Winans Phase 2: Why It Is Not Gospel Music But Blasphemy

As concerning Christian music and other things concerning worship, I am not a traditional fundamentalist. I disagree with the position of John Calvin and other leaders of the Protestant Reformation, which is that songs, music and dance were primarily related to the tabernacle and temple in the Old Testament religion of the Hebrews, those things were fulfilled in Jesus Christ, and therefore the only permissible form of worship is hymns sung a capella (without music). Yet, that position is actually superior to the common claim that the only permissible mode of worship is that which dominated western culture in the 18th and early 19th century, a cultural/ethnocentric position because it is an indisputable fact of history that the early church – the ancient predominantly middle/near eastern one recorded in the New Testament – did not worship after the manner of Europeans that came along over 1500 years later. So, Christian country, Christian classical and opera music, Christian rock, Christian rap, gospel music (both contemporary and traditional) and the many other varieties under the sun by members of Body of Christ that is indwelt by and serves as a tabernacle for the Spirit of Christ are permissible, so long as it – along with everything else in Christianity – is governed by God’s revelation as preserved in the Bible.

The mere fact that the music is being performed by Christians does not make it acceptable to God, and neither does the intent of the performers or the effect that playing the music has on the regenerate (i.e. causing vigorous worship) or the unregenerate (i.e. helping them understand the gospel and lead them to conversion). The music is also not sanctified by the message (i.e. the lyrics) or the venue (i.e. being performed at a church or in a Christian concert). Moreover, the purpose of the music is to worship God, not to entertain people. Again, merely because it was made to entertain, inspire or aid Christians does not make it Christian music. If it was made to evangelize the lost to cause them to become Christians, then it is not Christian music. If it was made for people, then it is “people music.” Only if it is made for Christ does it become Christian music. And as with everything else, Jesus Christ did leave us in His Bible guidelines for what are acceptable.

Without going into a “theology of worship” discussion, two scripture texts that can be used as guidelines for choosing which music to listen to, include in worship, or (if per chance you are one who creates Christian music) compose are Romans 12:1-2 and Hebrews 12:28-29. The former reads “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Now this does not mean that Christians are commanded to reject popular or other music forms created or embraced by the world as worldly, or to create a distinctively Christian music form.

Christianity is not a religion of rules and rituals, but a religion of the heart. Thus, if your heart is not right, then your music will not be right either. So, rather than being some rule that would enjoin worldly musicians from making worldly music and from worldly listeners from hearing it – which appears to be the position of some of my fundamentalist friends – the message of Romans 12:1-2 is to not be worldly. Worldly musicians will make worldly music. Worldly listeners will listen to worldly music. The reason is that those people are of the flesh and will live accordingly. But Godly people will make and listen to Godly music because they are of God’s Spirit and will live according to God’s Spirit. No rules, regulations, rituals, customs, traditions etc. will made a worldly person Holy Spirit-filled and Holy Spirit-led in worship or anything else. And of course, such vain external trappings of false religion (John 7:24) should not keep true believers in bondage. So, if you are worldly, the world is what an artist will be thinking about, striving to emulate and please, when he makes his music. Further, if you are a worldly listener, you will not want music that reminds you of God and His attributes, but rather music that reminds you of the world that is your first love. But if you are Godly, then your desire to know and please God – your first love – will be reflected in the music that you make and/or listen to.

Now for the second text, Hebrews 12:28-29, which is not only an explicit command to guide worship, but tells us why this command or rule exists. “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire.” Note that “we may serve”, as the King James Version translators rendered it, is the Greek word latreuō, which can means “to perform sacred services, to offer gifts, to worship God in the observance of the rites instituted for his worship.” This definition fits the context, which is why other good translations use “worship” or “praise”. The English Standard Version renders Hebrews 12:28 with this very issue in mind (arguably making it more of an interpretation/commentary than a mere translation!) with “Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe.”

So make no mistake, this text commands us to worship God in an acceptable manner, and that the only acceptable manner is reverence. Again, reverence is not a rule, ritual or tradition, but a matter of the heart. The Old Testament bears this out. God gave Israel a specific, detailed collection of rules and rituals to follow concerning the manner in which He would be worshiped. What happened? They didn’t follow it. Why? Because their hearts were not right. They did not love God, they did not have a desire to know or serve God, so they did not consistently keep the religious forms that God gave them for any length of time. This was so as a general rule anyway. The remnant, the elect chosen and preserved by God, DID worship God to the best of their ability. So, even from the Old Testament we know that rules banning rock guitars, hip-hop drumbeats, or everything but hymns without musical accompaniment are vanities in a heart that is hardened. Just as a worldly heart will lust after the world, and irreverent heart will never know reverence in its cold, dead and depraved condition.

By contrast, a regenerate heart will revere God. Why? Again, Hebrews 12:28 tells us. Be not deceived: it is not mere mutable emotion that waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon, but something far more permanent. 1. Born again Christians are grateful to God for our permanent kingdom that cannot be shaken; that we will spend an eternity with Jesus Christ in New Jerusalem (commonly called heaven). This fact serves as a powerful hope, inspiration and driving force that remains constant no matter our circumstances or emotional state. 2. Our God is a consuming fire! Born again Christians do not erect false idols of nonexistent deities that will not punish the wicked. Instead, we love the truth – that God will punish and destroy the wicked – because this truth confirms God’s holiness and power, and we love God because He is holy and powerful! A safe god, a god that we can transgress and disrespect without consequence, or one who only punishes us for crimes committed against His creation (i.e. only sending murderers, thieves and rapists to hell for what they have done TO PEOPLE) and not for offenses done against God’s holiness is no God at all. Scripture makes it clear from beginning to end that God is One who demands and is holiness. God does have the whole world in His Hands after the manner of the children’s nursery rhyme, but make no mistake: God is no child’s toy, or anyone’s toy for that matter. The elect is indeed safe in the arms of Jesus Christ, as an old hymn asserts, but this same Jesus Christ – the same One who drove the thieves out of the temple with a whip and will one day return riding a white horse and carrying a two edged sword with which to horribly punish the wicked – isn’t safe! For those who reject this and deny that our God is a consuming fire, they should instead be confronted with the reality that it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God (Hebrews 10:31, plus a rather well known sermon)!

It is not merely a “we must worship God in this manner or God will send fire down from heaven and consume us” sort of fear, though Christians should certainly remember Nadab and Abihu, Uzzah, and Ananias and Sapphira when that very sort of thing did happen if only for the typology. Instead, it is simply a truth that God has disclosed His Divine Nature to us in the Bible, and those that are regenerate and hence truly love God will respond to God’s self revelation by acting in accordance to that revelation, not against it. Again, this is something that will not happen by way of adherence to ritual, or creating rules based on human comprehension of the facts of scripture, but as the elect are carried along by God’s Holy Spirit. Similar to salvation (consider what Jesus Christ told His disciples when they were astonished after the rich young ruler incident) with man, it is impossible to achieve worship that is spiritual and reverent, for man is only capable of worldly irreverent worship that mocks, hates and rejects God. But with God, it is possible to attain reverent spiritual worship that is liberated from the rusted shackles of carnality, and it is indeed achieved. This is done because it is God’s will to receive reverent spiritual worship that is pleasing to Him, and God’s will is most certainly done.

In conclusion, I will provide the example – a negative one – which motivated this entry: Let Him In By Winans Phase 2. It is simply one of the most egregious ones that I have encountered. For those who are uninitiated as concerning the R&B music genre, this song is – not emulates but is – a “slow jam”, meaning a romantic song. The purpose of the “slow jam” is to create a mindset – or mental atmosphere – of emotional and physical intimacy, including – but not limited to – sexual intercourse. (Of course, not a few artists in this genre make such songs solely and entirely for the purpose of promoting sexual intercourse, and take it as a compliment when their fans inform them that their music was played on their prom nights, wedding nights, when their children were conceived, etc.) And keep in mind: when such intimacy is not available or attainable, the purpose of the music is to remind people of such intimacy, or cause them to desire for or aspire to it! Make no mistake, that is the primary reason why such music exists, it is the primary reason why it is so popular with the artists who make it – as many of the artists are lovers of sensuality – and it is also why the music is so commercially successful.

And “Let Him In” by Winans Phase 2 is a song after this genre and spirit. The musical accompaniment is entirely sensual. So is the way that the song is sung. But that is not the main problem.Consider this: the “Let Him In” title of the song – and it is also a refrain, repetitively sung in a soft, sensual manner! – is an evangelistic plea to convert to Christianity. (It is based on the very common misapplication of Revelation 3:20, but the issue here is not the free will salvation theology advocated by the song, but the song’s irreverent form.)  Again, based on the musical and lyrical style, the purpose of it was to emulate an R&B “love song” (when in truth most “love songs” should be renamed “amorous songs” as they are far more often concerned with physical attraction and emotional infatuation than actual, Biblical love). Further, “let him in” is a widely known euphemism that has the purpose of requesting sexual intercourse. Make no mistake, as a large number of R&B (and rap/hip-hop) songs have a very similar musical and vocal sound and use the same “let him in” phrase according to its common meaning, how is it possible for one very familiar with the genre to listen to that song without making that association? Of course, it is possible to suppress it, and undoubtedly the professed Christians who listen to this very popular song do so. But had this song been reverent in the first place, it would not have been necessary. It is not the duty of the listener to suppress what the song would have certainly meant were it in a different genre, the genre that this song was intended to sound like. Instead, it is the duty of the Christian performer not to make a song that sounds very much like an entreaty for the listener to consent to Jesus Christ performing a sex act on him (or her)!

That sounded strong to you? Well, consider the lyrics to this song. Now they deny that the song is carnal on one hand, but the song elsewhere says – concerns Jesus Christ – “He’s making love to my heart.” Which by the way … A REFERENCE TO APPEARS FOUR TIMES! (I want to point out: THIS SONG IS BEING SUNG BY MEN. It would still be blasphemy were it sung by women, but I just wanted to point that out.) Some other lyrics from this homosexual love ballad – excuse me, gospel song: “Sweet as can be”, “I love the way he talks to me”, “Oooh I’m so happy.” Also, one of the “He’s making love to my heart” references asks the listener to “let him make love to your heart.” Again (and I do not intend this to be Mark Driscoll vulgar here): “let him in” in is colloquial context is a request to allow a man to have intercourse with you made by some intermediary. A common application is when a man is dating a woman, wants to have intercourse with her, but she is reluctant. So, the man gets a mutual friend of theirs to go to this reluctant woman on his behalf and tell her “Come on. He’s your boyfriend. You know you like him. You know you want him. You have been dating how long? Three months? What are you waiting for? How much longer are you going to wait? Come on, let him in!” When you read the lyrics, it honestly appears as if the meaning of the “let him in” phrase was not something that they were unaware, or some horrible accidental coincidence, but instead something that they directly, purposefully incorporated into the song, as the entire song itself is concerned with sexuality! The song explicitly says, in multiple occasions – “Jesus Christ is making love with my heart, let Jesus Christ make love with your heart!” And then it makes use of Revelation 3:20 (which is directly referenced in with “I’m here to let you know he’s knocking at your door to let him in”!) to make the connotation of the euphemism direct and complete. The song purposefully, directly associates – indeed depicts – Christian conversion and Christian living with sexual encounters with Jesus Christ in the same way that Paul associated the Christian’s life with an athlete running  a race. Now John MacArthur spoke of the rape of the Song of Solomon by Mark Driscoll. Well “Let Him In” constitutes no less than a (homosexual!) rape of Revelation 3:20 by Winans Phase 2.

This is merely the most egregious example that I am aware of. As I no longer listen to Christian music radio of any genre and merely happened upon this song, there are probably many others as bad or worse. But it serves as a good example of a song that is not reverent and is very much worldly. Though this song purports to be evangelistic, the truth is that it represents an attempt by carnal-minded people to win converts by relying on the basest of means. It is the “sex sells” approach to evangelism and discipleship that is advocated in this age by many, including Rick Warren and Ed Young Jr.

Rest assured, one cannot be carnal and worldly and be saved. One must be made holy, and this holiness is only achieved through Jesus Christ. The Bible does not tell us to become converted by lustfully imagining a sexual encounter with Jesus Christ. Instead, it tells us to repent of our sins and believe that Jesus Christ died for sins in the place of the sinner, was worthy to do so because of His being the Son of God, and was resurrected from the dead. Sin Kills: Pastor Richard Scott Harper Murders Deacon So He Can Have His Wife

This is a horrible tale of what sins does to people. This is why we truly need to preach the gospel to all, and to live it. Lies, deceit, adultery, and murder … the wages of sin are death.

Pastor admits stabbing lover’s husbandA Northwest Georgia pastor who was part of a love triangle on Wednesday pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing his lover’s husband. Richard Scott Harper, 37, made a deal with prosecutors that allows Harper and co-defendant Michelle Reynolds, 39, to avoid the death penalty. Reynolds’ husband, Thad Reynolds, was found stabbed multiple times in July 2004 outside a Frito-Lay distribution plant where he was a manager.

Harper and Thad Reynolds were good friends, police said. Thad and Michelle Reynolds attended Hollywood Baptist Church, where Harper was the family pastor and Thad Reynolds was a marriage counselor and deacon. Harper made a statement Wednesday to Floyd County District Attorney Leigh Patterson, agreeing to testify against Michelle Reynolds in court, Patterson said. “It’s an opportunity for me to get evidence against the other defendant,” Patterson said.

Harper plead guilty to two counts of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime. As part of his plea negotiation, Harper asked that the death penalty be removed as an option for himself and for Reynolds, Patterson said. Neither Harper’s nor Reynolds’ attorneys could be reached by phone Wednesday night for comment.

Patterson said if Harper testifies in accordance with his Wednesday statement, “we agree to recommend life in prison without parole for him” and for Reynolds. “We’ve met with the victim’s family, and they’re very supportive,” Patterson said. Patterson would not release the details of Harper’s statement, saying the information would be held until Reynolds went to court. 

Floyd County police discovered Harper’s and Michelle Reynolds’ romantic relationship in learning that the pair had conspired to kill Thad Reynolds. The victim and his wife had four children — ages 12, 6, 4 and 1 at the time of Michelle Reynolds’ arrest — who were taken care of by family and church members. It is uncertain when Reynolds will have her day in court.

This really is an example of why Christians need to stop defending and following these false preachers who flaunt their sinful and immoral lifestyles, acting as if their having a position in the church or their profuse claims of loving God and being born again means that their behavior is OK. We know of all the rumors of sex and financial scandals. Will it take an angry jilted lover or someone bilked out of thousands of dollars to seek violent revenge before Christians start taking heresy and apostasy in the church seriously? Yes, I said heresy and apostasy, because 1 Timothy 6 and many other places in the Bible make it clear that false doctrine leads to sinful behavior in those who hold to them.

On another tack, humans are born in sin and weak by nature. We are also prideful, which causes us to overestimate our own strength and virtue. We rationalize and justify first our weaknesses, then our desires, and then our sins. This reminds me of James 1:13-15, which reads “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” The lust in question is not merely of a sexual nature, but any sinful desire, including that of Satan, whose desire was to receive the praise from creation that was due to God alone.

This is why, as the book of James admonishes, that we are to flee temptation. This includes the temptation to make excuses and accommodations for and to follow preachers that we know are false. As we come closer to the return of Jesus Christ, the world is getting still more wicked, and as we can see, even the church is not immune. The only way to avoid getting swept up into this evil tide is A) salvation through Jesus Christ and B) holiness through right belief and right conduct.

Both are equally important. Right belief is of no use if you are not living in obedience to God, and in most cases obedience is a matter of “thou shalt” instead of “thou shalt not.” God did not call us to be contemplative mystic monks, or even monastics whose religious life is restricted to the safety of our homes and churches. This truth has been a great stumbling block for Christians, but faith without works is dead. But do not be mistaken: “thou shalt not” is also vital. The person who leads a lascivious profane rebellious lifestyle that does not reflect God’s holiness and purity and then points to the works that he has done in God’s Name is attempting to mock God, but God is not mocked.

All the same, if one has right practice but false beliefs, you are really no better off than the dry fruitless dead vine. Do not Jews produce good works? Mormons? Muslims? Hindus and Buddhists? Roman Catholics? Atheists? Unitarians? To more that is given, more is required, and if you reject the Word of God given to you in the Bible to follow after strange doctrines and the false preachers that advocate them, what excuse will you have on judgment day? 

It may seem as if I am exploiting a tragedy to promote an unrelated agenda, but that is not the case. This is an example of what not only sin, but sin in the life of not only professed Christians but in the life of a pastor and the wife of a deacon with 4 children, results in. If sin lead to death in this case, why should it not lead to the same in yours? Sin is the disease, and Jesus Christ is the cure, and that is the case for everyone.

Sex Sells Especially In The Church: Hannah Montana Miley Cyrus Does Everything For Jesus Christ Including Kissing Katy Perry And Liking It

I have tried to ignore this Miley Cyrus thing, even after her proclamations of not only being a Christian celebrity, but doing everything for Jesus Christ. The reason is that I had already dealt with the trend -beginning with Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, and Anna Kournikova in the 1990s but becoming a major part of our cultural landscape with Britney Spears – of making teenage (and even younger looking) girls into overt sex objects for not only teenage boys but also adult males in the past. Even that Miley Cyrus would be able to get away with the added dimension of claiming to serve Jesus Christ by being an underaged sex fantasy object was only a minor development. After all, Jessica Simpson’s father is a former Southern Baptist minister. Britney Spears made claims of being a Southern Baptist virgin a huge part of her original public relations profile. Destiny’s Child oft claimed Christianity. Mandy Moore went from singer to actress in the evangelical Christian film “A Walk To Remember.”  And lest we forget, the father of Miley Cyrus, after his country music career evaporated, did the common tactic of using Chri$tian capitali$m to stay in show business, even being given a TV series on “Christian family values” PaxNet (Doc, in which Miley Cyrus appeared in an episode). 

But Slice of Laodicea’s revealing the extent to which Miley Cyrus is mocking the very Christians that she is professing herself to be a role model for AND how some Christians are STILL DEFENDING HER (see link) made me decide that this topic was worth revisiting: Miley Cyrus kissing Katy Perry, who wrote the lesbian anthem “I Kissed A Girl”, at some MTV awards event. Cyrus says that she does everything for Jesus Christ … so apparently emulating Perry’s promotion of lesbianism was her way of spreading the gospel? 

Let me state that my position is that a Christian can pursue a career in secular music so long as said Christian’s music and betrayal does not transgress the Bible. So no, I am not objecting to Cyrus’ going on heathen MTV and being photographed with Perry. If there is no justification for me having a ‘holier than thou’ attitude when I at work, I also have no justification for demanding that she act that way just because she is a celebrity. Instead, my issue is with how so many entertainers are able to claim Christianity so that they can rake in even more money while still meeting the desires and expectations of their supporters who hate Jesus Christ.

And how does Miley Cyrus meet the expectations of these people? Kissing Katy Perry, something that people will remember when Cyrus inevitably attempts to make the leap from child entertainer to adult singer (more on that later) is just a tiny part of it, and why not let someone who does not claim to be Christian (but does acknowledge having and acting on lesbian desires),  actress Megan Fox explain:

Fox also defended Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgens regarding their racy photo scandals and said that she doesn’t like Disney because they take “these little girls, and they put them through entertainment school and teach them to sing and dance, and make them wear belly shirts …”

What Fox is speaking of is Disney’s game of turning little girls into sex objects. Why did I use Fox’s words instead of a Christian who said the same? Well show me a single prominent Christian that is taking up this battle (even if it is only in the context of saying “Miley Cyrus is not a suitable role model for Christian girls”) and I will use his or her words. As our “Christian leaders” are being preoccupied with wanting and hoping Cyrus, Spears, and their daughters and church members grow up to be beauty queen Sarah Palin, it appears that no such statements are forthcoming and the non – Christian Megan Fox has provided the most truthful words on this matter!

Miley Cyrus is part and parcel of the Disney “use kids for sexual fantasies” game. The tight skimpy outfits, makeup, clothes, dancing … Cyrus is one of many young girls that Disney uses to market sexual fantasies to both teen boys and also grown men with the emotional development of teen boys. How do we know this “grown men” part? Because when racy photos of Cyrus were published in Vanity Fair, it created so much traffic that their servers crashed. Thirteen year old boys are not Vanity Fair’s demographic! And no, it is not teen boys that create the vast majority of the many websites on the Internet dedicated to racy pictures of teenage (and again, often preteen looking) girls. It is grown men who not only create those sites, but grown men who visit them, often paying money to do so! 

And Cyrus is in no way unique. Quite the contrary, sexuality using and aimed at teens and preteens pervades virtually every Disney show, even the cartoons, and has for years. So, when Miley Cyrus agreed to the Disney show, she knew what it would involve, and so did her father. And even if Miley Cyrus was somehow unaware at this Internet subculture based on trading images of underaged girls when she agreed to do the show A) her father knew and B) Cyrus certainly knows now, because she is the latest in a long line of “oh my goodness how and why did someone violate my privacy by stealing and publishing these racy photos!” young starlets that use that Internet subculture to enhance their fame. 

Is this as bad as when Kanye West was actually nominated for a gospel music award for recording “Jesus Walks”, or when Destiny’s Child received good publicity for putting gospel songs on an album, and one of their members released a gospel album? I still remember the video for “Survivor” … one of the “singers” claimed to have overcome persecution in Hollywood for refusing to compromise their Christianity, and right after the word “Christianity” was, er, “sung”, the video cut to the grind – dancing bikinied crotch (something straight out of the strip club) of the “singer”, either overtly mocking Jesus Christ or their Christian supporters buying their albums. If any Christians denounced that video (or Destiny’s Child’s claims to be in any way Christian), I missed it. 

The younger Cyrus knows what she is doing. So does the older Cyrus. Evidence of this is how they handled the mild criticism from Christians over the Vanity Fair photo shoot: Miley Cyrus made the typical claim of being exploited and taken advantage of by the worldly heathens at the Noo Yawk magazine, and Billy Ray Cyrus claimed that it happened because he trusted the Vanity Fair people with his daughter and was off somewhere on business instead of protecting his daughter’s virtue. Now Vanity Fair’s version of the story was entirely different. Quite frankly, anyone who has ever watched the excessive makeup, skin tight clothes, and suggestive dancing that takes place on a typical episode of Hannah Montana (let alone Cyrus’ increasingly notorious private behavior) would find the Vanity Fair New York heathens to be much more credible than the professing Christians from evangelical entertainment and publishing capital Franklin, Tennessee. 

Now Britney Spears dropped the Christian pretensions once she decided to leave the teeny bopper scene behind and aim for a more adult sound and a wider more lucrative audience. Miley Cyrus’ far edgier public profile lately, plus her public statements that she wants to stop doing Hannah Montana, indicates that she is ready to follow Spears’ path. And why not? If it works, why try to fix it? But the issue is not the younger Cyrus, who will succeed or fail on her own merits. (Since she isn’t much of an actress, dancer, singer or songwriter those merits will consist of being able to get males older than 15 to look at her. Well, good luck with that.) It is not the older Cyrus, who has gleefully used his daughter to extend what is left of his fame. (The Disney Channel actually plays his songs and videos … probably because their contract with his daughter compels them to.) The issue is with Christians so desperate to have an entertainer in the secular arena that they can call their own. The common justification is that “we need to be represented in mainstream culture.” Fine. If a Christian can use their mainstream soapbox to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ so that sinners can come to repentance, fine. But show me a shred of evidence that Cyrus, Spears, Destiny’s Child, West, etc. have done this or even tried to (the solo gospel album of Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams as an exception). Instead, what is these people truly mean is that “we need THEM to represent US in mainstream culture so WE won’t feel so strange, different, and alone!” 

Now this is not an endorsement of theologian Soren Kierkegaard, but his goal of making Christianity hard and uncomfortable for those in his homeland that had made Christianity easy by marrying the church with the state (or in our context marrying the church to the culture) should be considered. In this context, Christians are not even allowing themselves to be used and exploited by God – mockers like Spears and Cyrus. Instead, Christians are the users and exploiters. They are sacrificing these little girls to the child porn (in the sense that Jesus Christ used the term “pornea”, which means sexual immorality) monster so they can avoid what the Bible says about rejecting the world and being rejected by it. It is because of their own need to be accepted and loved by and have a place in the world that they could care less how many young girls Hollywood chews up and spits out. They could care less how many young girls develop eating disorders or disfigure themselves because they think that if they can just look like Britney or Miley someone will love them (because hey, it isn’t as if Britney or Miley interrupts their shimmy pole dancing and selling merchandise long enough to tell these girls – or boys – that JESUS CHRIST LOVES THEM … if they did Disney would rip up their contracts overnight).

They could care less how many husbands become emotionally detached from their wives because they are committing adultery (again according to Jesus Christ’s definition of it) by surfing the web looking for pictures of Miley, Britney, Lindsay Lohan (another Disney product) to feed their fantasies, which many find much easier than emotionally relating to their living breathing adult spouse. And no, they could care less about how many little boys that grow up socialized by Disney’s (and Nickelodeon’s) sexuality go on to become rapists, and how many of those men that crashed Vanity Fair’s servers go on to molest their daughters. And they could care less about how the carnage of human emotion that causes will lead to suicides and murders (including but certainly not limited to abortions). “Being represented” in the world so that they don’t have to reject it or be rejected by it is so valuable to these Christians that they are very much willing to sacrifice what happens to everyone else, even when that everyone includes the Savior Jesus Christ that is being mocked. But be not deceived … God is not mocked. Thus saith scripture. And on judgment day, all will see precisely how and why God’s Name shall not be the subject of shame. The ones who will behold this will not only be the artists purporting to be Christian, but the purported Christians that created the environment where such artists could successfully employ this tactic.

Jeremiah Wright’s Adultery With A White Woman Is An Example Of 1 Timothy 6 False Doctrine Leads To Sexual Immorality!

My position is that 1 Timothy 6:1-10 can be interpreted as stating that false doctrines lead to sexual immorality in those that preach the doctrines and those that hear them. In my opinion, false doctrines are one of the main reasons why there are all these sex scandals in the church, and evidence of correlation between devil’s doctrines and sexual immorality is present in the New Testament, in the church at Corinth in particular

So here is the text of 1 Timothy 6:1-10:

All who are under the yoke as slaves are to regard their own masters as worthy of all honor so that the name of God and our doctrine will not be spoken against. Those who have believers as their masters must not be disrespectful to them because they are brethren, but must serve them all the more, because those who partake of the benefit are believers and beloved Teach and preach these principles. If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 

Now I first made the correlation between sexual immorality and the prosperity doctrine after reading this passage after radio minister/teacher Bob George referenced 1 Timothy 6 in response to a question whether it was acceptable to listen to Kenneth Copeland, Fred Price, and other prosperity doctrine teachers (of course George’s answer was an emphatic no) on his nationwide call in radio show. How does this relate to Jeremiah Wright? Well first of all, Wright’s liberation theology teachings are really no different from the prosperity doctrine. Both center around getting Christians to de – emphasize the promise of spiritual blessings and eternal life in favor of an emphasis of earthly things, whether wealth and health in the prosperity doctrine or seeking political changes that will result in favorable economic conditions for minorities and workers via liberation theology. Just as the extreme version of the prosperity doctrine, the Word of Faith, teaches that God has abdicated His throne with respect to the rule of creation to man, first to Adam and then to the church, the true version of liberation theology denies the actual existence of heaven and the lake of fire, claiming that they are metaphors for political, economic, and social conditions on earth. It is no small coincidence then that liberation theology thought that is so prominent among the religious left that is so influential in the Democratic Party (please remember that Bill Clinton hosted Jeremiah Wright at the White House!) in both the white left as represented by mainline Protestant denominations and liberal Roman Catholics and the black left as represented by the civil rights movement (please recall that Martin Luther King, Jr. rejectd the virgin birth, deity, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and hence cannot be considered as having been a Christian in any sense) has as its correlation the prosperity/Word of Faith doctrines in the form of figures like John Hagee, Rod Parsley, and Pat Robertson that are so influential in the Republican Party (and please recall Mike Huckabee’s attempts to bring Kenneth Copeland into the fold as well). If you want more evidence that the two parties merely represent faces on the same wicked coin that may look different but in truth are part of the same entity and joined in the middle, there you go! 

Continuing, when reading that passage more, I formed the opinion that all false doctrines, not just the prosperity doctrine, lead to immorality in general with sexual immorality being just one. As a matter of fact, associating that godliness is gain and predatory destructive unnatural sexual behavior are just symptoms of the larger spiritual, mental, and character issues that go with one having a reprobate mind.

And this brings us back to this Jeremiah Wright fellow. The fellow was already “married” to another man’s wife that he exploited and abused his position of marriage counselor to get a woman in a troubled marriage to leave her husband so that he could marry her shortly after: Jeremiah Wright’s Adulterous Marriage. This uses as source material in part BARACK’S REV. ‘STOLE A WIFE’ – EX-HUBBY: HE COUNSELED US, THEN WED HER. (Did his congregation care? Of course not.) Well now this: Jeremiah Wright committed adultery with the wife of a pastor, resulting in the dissolution of the marriage. REPORT: REV. JEREMIAH WRIGHT HAS AFFAIR WITH ANOTHER MAN’S WIFE. (It would appear that this pastor was another teacher of false doctrine, and also one who uses the same trick of claiming to have degrees that he does not have. By the way, Jamal – Harrison Bryant also claimed the same phony degree from the same place, which only offers certificates from some summer training program and not doctorates, and Bryant, who is leading the charge to bring the prosperity doctrine into the same African Methodist Episcopal denomination that James Cone was a member of when he created black liberation theology – small world isn’t it – is also documented and proven to be sexually immoral. ) And guess what: Wright used the time dishonored “I will leave my wife for you” trick on his prey.

Now make no mistake, Fox News and the New York Post have an agenda. These operations are owned by the world’s biggest pornographer Rupert Murdoch whose pastor is Rick Warren (who asserts that Murdoch is a born again Christian!), who tells his church members to use sexual titillation in order to win converts (see here and here) and is not above using teen girls performing sexually suggestive dances to please his audience like Herod’s daughter did before demanding the head of John the Baptist for her mother (read Matthew 14) during “praise and worship service.” Of course, Warren’s false New Age “God wants to make you feel all good and happy” doctrines are not at all distinct from Joel Osteen’s brand of prosperity teaching. Back to Fox News and the New York Post, their agenda is to influence the upcoming presidential election. 

Me, I do not share that agenda. I could care less who you vote for. As a matter of fact, my position is that Christians should vote for NEITHER. The video in this link from Pastor Slattery illustrates why I have this position. Instead, my agenda is to tell Christians to flee these false doctrines, for they do in fact destroy people’s lives. As far as this Obama person goes in general, it really does appear that he has been recruiting as many degenerate pastors as McCain has, if not more. Here is one good site on that issue. The strait gate is not through the Democratic or Republican Party (or Green or Socialist or Communist or Constitution or Libertarian or Labour or Tory or Christian Democrats or Kadima or Likud) but through belief in and obedience to the Jesus Christ of the Bible through right belief (orthodoxy) and right behavior (orthopraxy). The sad case of Jeremiah Wright’s adultery is just one evidence among many of what happens when pastors and their followers that reject right belief in their teaching … right behavior inevitably exits as well.

Breaking Pornography Addiction

 Have you ever said anything like this?

  • “I’ve tried to stop so many times, but somehow I still end up in front of the computer surfing websites.”
  • “Cold showers, prayer, avoiding situations—I’ve tried everything. Is there any hope for me?”
  • “I know I should get help, but I am too ashamed.”
  • “I thought only men struggled with pornography, but I spend way too much time in my own little fantasy world.”

If you have, it’s likely that you are feeling trapped by an addiction to pornography and sexual fantasies. You feel guilty and ashamed, but you just can’t seem to stop. Maybe you are starting to notice that your relationships with the real people in your life are being affected by your struggle.

There is no magic bullet to free you from your addiction, but when you ask Jesus for help, he will come to you mercifully and firmly. Jesus welcomes all kinds of strugglers into his kingdom, and his Spirit will provide the deep-down change you long for.

Change happens when you face your behavior honestly, understand the roots of your behavior, and then go to God to work true change in your life. The true change that comes from God will affect not only your behavior, but also your imagination and desires in life. Do you believe God can do this? Take a step of faith; read this article, and ask God to use it to begin to change you.

What is Pornography?

The first part of the word pornography, “porné,” means immorality and the second part, “graph,” means to write, draw, or portray. Pornography is about picturing, imagining, and fantasizing about immorality.

Pornography has been around for centuries. But the widespread availability of pornography means the problem touches more people than ever before. Soft core pornography is everywhere you look: television, movies, magazines, billboards, and even posters at bus stops. And it’s not just in the media. In our world, both men and women dress to attract attention and to elicit romantic or erotic feelings in others. We are all bombarded with pornography every day—it’s the atmosphere we live in.

And pornography isn’t just a male problem. Both sexes have immoral fantasies. Women might be more captured by romantic literature and men by erotic pictures, but the end result is the same—you are committing adultery in your thought life.

Fantasizing Immorality is Wrong

Perhaps you have been told that fantasizing immoral images and actions isn’t really wrong. It’s true that it’s a different kind of wrong than having an actual affair, but it is still sin. Jesus made this clear when he said, “Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). It’s important for you to acknowledge that what you are doing is wrong, because you won’t fight well unless you are able to say, “This is an enemy. When I do this, I sin.”

What Does Progress Look Like?

What does progress in your struggle with pornography look like? In all typical human struggles (like anger, anxiety, escapism), winning doesn’t mean achieving perfection. It means having a new goal and a new direction. Your direction in life determines your final destination. Where are you headed? Are you going in the right direction? Going in the right direction in your struggle with pornography means learning to fight your temptation to sin, to handle your guilt when you fail, and to understand and avoid the circumstances in which you are tempted.

Making progress in these three areas does not mean you will suddenly get teleported from the mire in which you now live to the mountaintop of freedom from all temptation. Change in these areas means taking many small, incremental steps in the right direction. For example:

  • A decrease in the frequency of a sin is progress. It’s not good that you are still indulging in pornography, but if you are doing it less, you are going in the right direction.
  • A change in the actual nature of the sin is progress. If you are no longer having an affair or premarital sex, and now you are battling pornographic fantasy, it’s good that your struggle has changed from your actions to your imagination.
  • A change in the battleground is progress. When your battle has moved from purchasing materials or going onto explicit internet sites to battling the old fantasy tapes that are still in your mind, that’s movement in the right direction.
  • An increase in honesty and accountability is progress. You are moving forward when you are willing to be truly candid and accountable to a trusted friend, spouse, or pastor and say, “Here’s where I’m struggling.” An appropriate openness to others is a very significant step towards change.
  • Not always responding to difficult circumstances by indulging in sin is progress. When your life gets hard, if instead of going straight to your fantasy life, you pray for help and ask others to pray for you, then God is at work
  • Repenting more quickly is progress. Learning to go more quickly to the Lord of life, instead of wallowing for days, weeks, and months in the gloom of “I failed again,” is a sign that God is at work in your life.
  • Learning to love and consider the interest of real people is progress. Your immoral fantasies use other people in an imaginary world. Caring for others, even in small ways, means that Jesus is changing you.

Understand Your Deeper Struggle

How do you get going in the right direction? You start by understanding your struggle. It’s easy for your big, obvious sins (like surfing the internet for pornographic material) to conceal the deeper sins that fuel your struggle with pornography. But unless you recognize and repent of the sin patterns underlying your addiction, you won’t be fighting the right battle. I learned this when I counseled Tom1, a single, Christian man in his late thirties who had been struggling with pornography and masturbation since he was a teenager. He had tried all the right things: accountability, memorizing the Bible, exercise, cold showers, and being involved in ministry. But he still struggled.

When I asked him to keep a record of when he was tempted, he said to me, “I already know when. It’s usually on Friday night. It’s my temper tantrum with God.” I thought his big struggle was with pornography, but all of a sudden he was talking about anger at God!

Then he said, “I’m tired and lonely on Friday nights. I think about my single friends on dates and my married friends with their wives, and I feel sorry for myself. I get angry at God because I think he owes me a wife, and I don’t have one. By nine o’clock the temptation to sexual sin is overwhelming, and I give in.”

Tom’s fight with sin focused on just one thing—his struggle with pornography. But underlying that struggle was Tom’s anger at God, self-pity, envy, and a hugely significant issue: his belief that God owed him a wife. Tom’s desire for a wife had become what the Bible calls a “lust of the flesh.” A lust of the flesh is any desire (even a desire for a good thing like a wife) that dominates our lives, anything we organize our lives around except God. Tom’s lust for a wife fueled his sins of self-pity, anger at God, and then pornography.

Tom was also a legalist. He believed that when he tried to be a good Christian God owed him goodies (such as a wife), and when he did something wrong he despaired. Tom’s imagination was much more than a sexualized imagination. It was full of envy, grumbling, and believing that what he did would either pry goodies from God or release a whirlwind of punishment. His imagination didn’t include the gospel, forgiveness of sins, understanding God’s love for him, or understanding the help that’s available from the Spirit of God. Underneath all of Tom’s sins was unbelief. He was living as if God wasn’t with him and wasn’t able to help him in his time of need.

As Tom faced these deep sin patterns and confessed them to God, he started to grow and change. His entire Christian life had been about managing one moral failure, but now his Christian life began to sparkle. He was fighting a much broader battle, and God gave him a wider vision to see the real battle and the real grace of God that was available for his whole life, not just one area of temptation.

You can take the same journey that Tom did. Start a journal, and keep track of what’s happening in your life when you struggle with pornography. Answer these questions:

  • When does it happen? What is going on? What happened that day?
  • What were you thinking about? What was the nature of the temptation?
  • What did you do about it? Did you act on it?
  • If you didn’t act on it, how did that happen?
  • If you did, what did you do after you fell?
  • How did you recover? What was the after-effect?

Keeping this journal will help you see what is really going on in your struggle with pornography. As you start to grapple with your deeper sin patterns, you’ll see that your problem is much bigger, your need for grace is much deeper, and your goal is much more magnificent than you ever imagined.

You Go to God

What do you do when you see the scope of the battle you are fighting? How do you begin taking those small steps in the right direction that will add up to deep-down change? You go to God. These four words—so simple to say and so hard to do—are at the center of how you fight against sin.

Why is this so hard? Because your natural instinct is to turn to yourself, instead of to Jesus. This is true of all sin, but it’s obvious in your struggle with pornography because it’s a solitary pursuit. Your pornographic sins are, by definition, only about you: what you want, what you hope for, and what you long for. When you are facing hard or disappointing circumstances—boredom, loneliness, money problems, fighting with a spouse, distance from a friend—it’s easy (and instinctive) to turn in on yourself and try to escape your troubles by going to your fantasy life.

After you sin, it’s easy (and instinctive) to stay turned in on yourself, but in a different way. Now, because you feel guilty, you chew on yourself, kick yourself, and are dismayed with yourself. But even your guilt is all about you.

Your only hope for deliverance from this never-ending cycle of self is going to Jesus. How do you recover from defeats? You recover from defeats by going back to the God who offers mercy and forgiveness to you through the death of his own Son on the cross. Jesus died so you could be forgiven.

How do you face hardship, boredom, hurt, betrayal, and loneliness? By going to the God who is there, who is not surprised by sexual sin, who hears you, who cares about you, who wants to be in relationship with you. He is able to change your instinctive patterns

Practical Strategies for Change

Imagine that your heart, your true inner self, is a room filled with your thoughts, feelings, experiences, and perceptions. Some are good and full of light, and some are bad and full of evil and darkness. There are two ways to clean out the evil and darkness and bring light and goodness to the whole room. You can eject the evil bodily: Fight the sin! Say no! Call your accountability person. Repent. Remember the Bible. Cry out to God for mercy. That’s one-half of the battle.

The other way you fight sin is to flood your heart with light. When the room of your heart is filled with light, the shadows, the darkness, and the evil will be pushed out. You don’t just put off your sins; you have to put on something new. Part of winning your battle with sexual sin is learning a new way of living.

Talk to God

This new way of living starts with pouring your heart out to God. Begin by praying through Psalm 25. This psalm provides you with a pattern to follow as you deal with sin, hard circumstances, and guilt. In the first few verses of the psalm, David turns to God and talks to him about the difficulties in his life. He says, “Do not let me be put to shame.…No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame” (vv. 2–3).

Then he immediately starts asking God to help him deal with his sins. He doesn’t want to end his life in shame and failure, so he prays, “Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior” (vv. 4–5). David specifically asks God to remember his own character, “Remember, O LORD, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old.…According to your love remember me” (vv. 6–7). He wants God to look at his life through the lens of his compassion, goodness, and forgiveness.

Right in the center of the psalm, there’s this wonderful verse: “For the sake of your name, O Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great” (v. 11). This is the heart of what it means to go to God—a radical giving of your life into the hands of another. David is putting himself in God’s hands and trusting him for everything he needs. He is pleading with God on the basis of his character to pardon him, change him, teach him, instruct him, grow him, and make him different.

David goes on to pray about his troubles, his afflictions, his loneliness, his stress, his hurts, and his enemies. After he prays about all the problems that bring temptation into his life, he asks God to meet him and “free me from anguish” (v. 17) and again to “take away all my sins.…Guard my life and rescue me” (vv. 18, 20).

Do you see how praying through this psalm will lead you out of your world of sin, guilt, and the difficult circumstances that are the occasion for your stumbling? Pray this psalm to God and insert your troubles, your sins, and your need for forgiveness into it. As you pray, God will begin to reverse the turning inward that sin, guilt, and hardship bring. And he will draw you to himself—to the one who, for his name’s sake and by his mercy, must and will work in you.

Listen to God

Don’t stop with pouring your heart out to God. Listen to what he says about sexual sin.

Listen to what God says in Proverbs 5:15–23. This passage is about finding sexual fulfillment in marital faithfulness and the consequences of not doing so. Pay close attention to this verse: “For a man’s ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all his paths” (v. 21). Your struggle with sexual sin will change when you understand that it is not a private struggle; your whole life is lived in public before God. Remembering that you are not living in your own little private world, but you are living in God’s world where he sees everything, will make it much more difficult to sin. Use this passage to remind yourself that when you look for sexual fulfillment outside of marriage you will be ensnared and held fast in the “cords” of sin (v. 22), and the way forward is living in “full view” of God.

Listen to what God says in Matthew 5:27–30:

You have heard that it was said, “Do not commit adultery.” But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Jesus sets the bar high for your thought life, then gives a radical prescription for dealing with your lust. You are to tear it out, cut it off, and throw it away. He is telling you how to break your addiction. Your fight must be vigorous and resolute. You must roll up your sleeves, see that your enemy is you, and fight against your desires.

Get a New Vision

Because pornography is a sin of the imagination, true change has to reach your thought life. You can’t “just say no” to an evil imagination. You have to appeal in a more profound way to your imagination by working to replace the evil, dark, and wicked in your mind with the good, light, and pure.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery, a French writer, said, “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood, and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” This is exactly what God does for you. He wants you to have a vision of something so much better than living within your dark, self-centered imagination. God wants to give you a vision of life as it is meant to be—filled with a real, true, and intimate relationship with him and authentic, loving relationships with others.

Isaiah 61—62 will give you that kind of vision. These chapters are full of life and hope. Read them and notice how Jesus promises to help you. He binds up the brokenhearted. Aren’t you brokenhearted by your continuing struggle with sin? He brings freedom to prisoners. Don’t you feel imprisoned by your sexual sins? He comforts those who mourn. Don’t you mourn when you fall into sin one more time? Fill your mind with the promises in these chapters: Jesus will give you gladness instead of mourning and praise instead of fainting under guilt. He will replace your shame with a new name, a beautiful crown, and a royal diadem—a new imagination.

Build Real Relationships of Love

The prophet Isaiah said, “‘Woe to me!’ I cried. ‘I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips’” (Isaiah 6:5). Then an angel brought a coal of fire that cleansed his lips. This is what God is doing in you as you struggle with sexual sin. You are unclean, and you live in the middle of unclean people. But there’s an altar on which the Lamb of God has been sacrificed. From that altar comes a coal of fire, and you are cleansed.

Now you say to God as Isaiah did, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8). There are things to do. There are people to love and treat differently. Building real relationships of love with real people is crucial to the transformation of your imagination. You have spent way too much time in your private fantasy world.

It’s time to build same-sex friendships with people who will hold you accountable and care about you. It’s time to build healthy brother-sister relationships with the opposite sex as well. Leave your fictional world of pretend relationships and, if you are a man, start viewing women as your sisters, as people to protect instead of prey upon. If you are a woman, start treating men as your brothers. If you’re married, begin the hard work of building an honest relationship where sexuality becomes one of the fruits of your unity as a couple.

Build Accountability into Your Life

Becoming accountable to others is crucial to breaking your pornography addiction. But who should you confess to? Start by confessing to God, and then also confess to someone who can help you grow, who will hold you accountable, who can counsel you, pray for you, and encourage you. Who should that person be? Pick a same-sex friend who’s trustworthy, who will ask you hard and pointed questions, who loves you and is willing to hang in there with you over the long haul.

If you’re married, should you confess to your spouse? The ideal is that your spouse would be your most faithful and helpful accountability partner. But this sin directly affects your spouse, because in your mind you are betraying him or her. So you have to think carefully, with the help of a wise friend, counselor, or pastor, how you can confess to your spouse without hurting him or her more. As in all sharing, you don’t need to go into every gory detail; you can share just enough in a generic way that your spouse knows what you are confessing, so he or she can offer you real forgiveness. This will dissipate the cloud that sexual fantasies have put over your marriage, and then the sexual union that happens afterward can be fresh and in the context of mercy.

Any sharing (in any relationship) should not become a source of temptation. The Bible is full of stories about sexual sin, and they are told in a way that leaves us with no illusions, but is never arousing.

Minister God’s Grace to Others

As God blesses you and changes you, minister to others the grace you have been given. Let God send you to those who are struggling as you have struggled. There’s protection from sexual sin in knowing that later this afternoon or tomorrow you’re going to be talking to someone else who struggles. You will want to talk to them with a clear conscience and a bright heart. If you can’t, it will be your opportunity to go to God again and ask for mercy and help.

The transformation of your life from your isolated, private, imaginary world of romantic and erotic desires will happen as you learn to live in the real world where there is a real God to trust, need, know and love, and where there are real people with whom to reconcile, love, and serve. Crying out to God for help, thanking him for help received, praising him for who he is, and being willing to be sent by him to love others is how God will continue the lifelong work of transforming you and making you useful in his world.
