Germany, France deny plans for European bank fund

Posted by Job on October 6, 2008

ROME, Oct 5 (Reuters) – German and French officials denied on Sunday that they were set to endorse a common fund to bail out European banks after Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was quoted as saying all three nations would back it.

“There’s no proposal for such a fund,” said a French official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity. Officials in Berlin and London also denied plans for a European Union-wide bailout.

“There’s no change from the statement issued on Saturday,” the French official added, referring to a joint statement the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and Britain issued after they met in Paris on Saturday — a statement that made no mention of a fund.

Berlusconi was quoted by Italian agencies as saying that his economy minister, Giulio Tremonti, would propose setting up the fund at a meeting of EU economic and finance ministers in Luxembourg on Monday and Tuesday, and that the plan was already assured the backing of Germany and France:

“Tremonti will propose to Ecofin the setting up of a common fund worth 3 percent of GDP … Yesterday (German Chancellor Angela) Merkel couldn’t accept because she didn’t have the powers, today she has said she agrees. Tomorrow France will do the same.”

But German Finance Ministry spokesman Torsten Albig said Germany remained opposed to a common fund to bail out Europe’s banks.

“This was an issue in Paris and there is no need to go over it again,” Albig said. Asked whether Germany supported the latest Italian proposal, Albig said: “No. Nothing has changed.”

Berlusconi said that he was confident that Britain would also agree, ANSA news agency reported.

But a British finance ministry official, asked about Berlusconi’s reported comments, referred to Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s statement on Friday that there was “no currency” to the suggestion of a European-wide fund. Iran And Russia Sign Major Oil Deal

Iran and Russia sign major oil deal
Jul. 14, 2008  The Media Line News Agency , THE JERUSALEM POST

A few days after French oil giant Total withdrew from its planned multi-billion dollar gas investment project in Iran, Russia’s Gazprom is entering the market in a multi-billion-dollar deal.

Gazprom’s Chief Executive Alexei Miller met on Sunday with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and went on to sign an agreement for developing Iranian oil and gas fields.

Iran, according to the agreement, has offered Gazprom an extended package for the development of oil and gas fields; construction of refineries; transfer of oil from the Caspian Sea to the Sea of Oman; development of Iran’s North Azadegan oil field; exchange of technology and experience; and the possible participation of Gazprom in the planned pipeline between Iran, India and Pakistan.

Azadegan is Iran’s biggest onshore oil field with an estimated 42 billion barrels of crude oil. Iranian firms began working on the field in February after the Japanese partner, Inpex, quit the project. (Thought Japan and France were our allies against Iran?)

The accord also includes the future formation of a joint company between the two countries, for cooperation in oil and gas.

Official reports from both countries have not yet revealed if the South Pars gas field will also be part of the deal. Last week, France’s Total decided to freeze its investments in South Pars, following Iran’s test-fire of long-range missiles. (When the heat got too much for the French. They will start it back up when the heat dies down.)

“After Total’s announcement that because of political risk they do not want to commit themselves to the South Pars multi-billion-dollar project, it was natural that Iran would continue and expedite its current negotiations to use other companies,” Manouchehr Takin of the UK-based Center for Global Energy Studies, told The Media Line.

The South Pars field in the Gulf has around 500 trillion cubic feet of gas, which accounts for about eight percent of the world’s gas reserves.

Takin was however skeptical regarding whether or not it was the American pressure on European companies that made Total withdraw from the project.

“I think it is more within Total’s shareholders and board of directors, who have looked at every aspect, and decided not to take too much political risk in their portfolio,” he said.

“However, I do agree that one cannot help but think of the pressure from the US Department of Treasury, who had been directly talking to managements of banks and big companies, twisting their arms not to get involved with Iran,” Takin added.

Man’s Genetical Hardwiring Toward Religious Belief

Posted by Job on June 7, 2007

From BornToWin.Net, a most excellent teaching ministry.

Is it true that man is “genetically hardwired” towards religion? According to Tony Blankley, some neuro – scientists think so. One thing is clear. Man is hardwired with a system of logic. I didn’t understand years ago that computers are hardwired with a logical system that included a language. If you didn’t know know the language, you couldn’t do much with the computer. Some friends gave me my first computer. I suspect because they hadn’t been able to make it work any better than I could at first. I turned it on and started pressing keys, but nothing of interest happened. I could make letters appear on the screen, but the letters didn’t do anything.

I sort of felt like the proverbial monkey at a typewriter, banging out random symbols. And them someone told me the magic word: DOS. But what was DOS? Ah well, there was the rub. DOS means “Disk Operating System.” The computer had slots for two disks, so I bought one that said “DOS” and put it in. I still couldn’t do any work, I had to get another disk that had a program. But neither disk would work in just any computer. The computer had to be hardwired with a language so that it would understand what was on the disks.

So the term hardwired entered into the language of psychology and neuro – science as a description of that part of the human mind we are all born with. Every child born into the world arrives with a built – in system of logic. We don’t have to be taught it, because it is hardwired into us. The brain itself is “wired” according to a logical system, and the mind operates on that system. We start life witih an untrained logical system with an enormous potential for development.

What makes this interesting is that, in the absence of true religion and faith in God, man will inevitably make up his onw. In primitive societies, they create wooden gods. In intellectual societies, a little more ingenuity is required. Blankley: Some neuro – scientists see evidence that man is genetically hardwired to be disposed to religious conviction. If this is so, it might explain why even among the French – the most secular culture on earth – only 25 percent claim to be atheists and a full 60 percent believe in a spiritual component to life. It might also explain why the environmental movement tends to veer towards a religious, rather than a scientific, sensibility.

There are two things I found of special interest. One is that you cannot eradicate religion from the human being by education. If you could, the French would have done it long ago. Maybe this accounts for the persistence of religious faith in this country despite of an educational system that is legally hardwired to eradicate it. I also notice the suggestion of religious sensibility in the environmental movement (*my note: the Gaia religion). The idea of a religious instinct is important. Geese are hardwired to migrate. Man is hardwired to make sense out of his world – what Viktor Frankl called a “drive to meaning.” And making sense out of the world involves some sense of direction, thus prediction. Or, in biblical terms, prophecy. Now, I pause to reflect on an obvious truth. Man didn’t wire himself. Nor did his system of logic evolve from neurons, any more than than the logic of my computer evolved from a collection of wires. Both are the works of a designer/creator. Any suggestion that man is hardwired to do anything is a suggestion of design and object.

Yours in the service of true religion, Ronald L. Dart

Al Qaeda Targeting France To Influence Elections

Posted by Job on February 14, 2007

This development after France has spent DECADES (especially in the past few years doing everything possible to hinder the war on terror) trying to appease rogue Islamic states and radical and terroristic Islamic organizations and being an opponent of Israel. And this is despite France being “oh so secular” (please recall that people claim that America’s being overtly Christian made us a target) and being “oh so socialist” (for those who claim that America’s capitalistic imperialism made us a target). As a matter of fact, France is often the model country that our own anti – Christians and the rest of the anti – Christian world compares America against unfavorably, claiming that if we were more like FRANCE, then we would have NO PROBLEMS WITH MUSLIM EXTREMISTS. Instead, we would be leading Muslims to peace and secularism. Now I do not know if these terror reports are true (or are just more Al Qaeda blustering, as they are wont to do), and I CERTAINLY DO NOT WISH VIOLENCE, MURDER, MAYHEM, AND UNREST ON FRANCE AS CHRISTIANS ARE SUPPOSED TO LOVE EVERYONE AND HATE ALL EVIL, but if there is anything at all to them, then it proves this “we should be more like France” crowd wrong (as if France’s declining native birthrates and virtually nonexistant marriage culture doesn’t already.
