Why Judas Iscariot Betrayed Jesus Christ

Posted by Job on April 29, 2009

According to scripture, it was because he did not believe.

Jhn 6:64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

Recall, scripture reports that Satan tempted and finally entered into, or possessed, Judas Iscariot. This was so because Judas Iscariot did not believe. Judas Iscariot was not of the elect, not predestined to salvation, and, and as such, as Jesus Christ said, it would have been better had Judas Iscariot never been born.

I already knew that. What i want to know, and what i have been wondering all my life is why did Judas go hang himself when he realized his error, rather than fall on his knees and beg God for forgiveness? On the other hand, I once heard Chuck Swindoll mention that he believes that satan is ALWAYS involved in/behind every suicide. And as you/scripture point out, Judas became possessed by satan, so that certainly supports Chuck’s statement. Nonetheless, despite being possessed by the epitome of evil himself, Judas was able to feel remorse for what he’d done to Jesus! Or was it true remorse?? In any case, what a very sad end.

Judas was very Prideful and Satan is the Father of Pride. His pride would rather have him dead that to admit fault and or bow at any man’s feet.

Judas betrayed Jesus because he was put here to do so. That’s why after he did it and got his money his life was over. He had completed his mission. He was the son of perdition. When Judas’s father the devil’s time is complete he will be destroyed forever just like his son Judas was

Zi’s answer makes some sense. Nan’s i have some trouble with, as it is basically stating that:
    1. we (or at least Judas was) are all just a bunch of pawns God plays chess with
    2. that Jesus Christ died for everyone’s sins EXCEPT Judas’. Doesnt make much sense to me. A better explanation for Judas being caleld the son of perdition is that God knew all along what Judas would do; God know the future, always.

You have accused Jesus of saying things he did not say. Jn 6:64

In verse 60 it says he had many disciples. And in 66 & 67 many of those “who did not believe” followed no more and then Jesus asked the twelve, “Will you also go away?”

If Judas did not believe why didn’t he leave like the rest of the unbelieving disciples that left? Any comment from anyone would be pure speculation on their part and would be adding to the Word of God.

And to your second statement–“as Jesus Christ said, it would have been better had Judas Iscariot never been born.” I believe the translator did a bad translation of this verse.

Read a literal translation like Young

“The Son of Man doth indeed go, as it hath been written concerning him, but woe to that man

through whom the Son of Man is delivered up! Good it were for him if that man had not been born.

    (Mt. 26:24 YLT).

Now that you have read that now replace the words “him” with Jesus and “that man” with Judas. You’ll get the following:

“The Son of Man doth indeed go, as it hath been written concerning Jesus, but woe to that Judas

through whom the Son of Man is delivered up! Good it were for Jesus if Judas had not been born.
