Jesus Christ Is Lord

That every knee should bow and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father!

Once Saved Always Saved Thanks To Jesus Christ

Posted by Job on October 20, 2008

An excellent example of the incontrovertible Biblical truth of the doctrine “perseverance of the saints”, or rather “once saved always saved” is the verse John 17:11 contained within the high priestly prayer of Jesus Christ:

And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

Now please recall that a role of the priest is to stand before God as the people’s appointed intercessor and representative. So in this prayer, Jesus Christ stood before God the Father in the role that God the Father gave Him, as the elect lady’s (the church’s) vicar, and made a request of this same God the Father on our behalf.

What did He request? “Keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me!” Now keep us with respect to what? From poverty? No, for many Christians have been poor. As a matter of fact, many early Christians were known for their poverty and admired for their dignity and holiness in enduring it. Oppression? No, for the Bible says that our trials and tribulations are part of the process of God’s refining, reproving, purifying, and teaching us. Death? No, for a mere few years after this sermon was prayer was given we saw martyrdom beginning with Stephen.

Does it refer to schism? Why yes, it does! Jesus Christ was in fact praying that none should leave the church. However, let us not think of this in an earthly sense, or else the Protestant Reformation (or more accurately the separation of groups like the Particular Baptists from the state Reformed churches) would have violated this prayer. As a matter of fact, even Paul and Barnabas going their separate ways over John Mark in Acts can be interpreted as something of an apostolic schism by earthly standards.

But that is by earthly standards. The true church, the Body of Jesus Christ, which the Bible in various places calls a mystery, is a spiritual reality, not an earthly body or institution. So when God the Son prayed to God the Father (I will propose that without Trinity my argument does not work because Jesus Christ would have been praying to Himself or to some nonexistent entity), He was not asking that we be prohibited from leaving first Baptist church for second Presbyterian church. And by “that they be one” Jesus Christ did not mean to restrain us from criticizing any and every “judge not touch not mine (never) anointed and do my (false) prophet no harm” crackpot pulpit pimp sorcerer and heretic that defames the term Christian by calling himself one.

Instead, when Jesus Christ was praying “Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one” He was petitioning the Father that every born again Christian would remain in the true church, the spiritual universal church that He is the Head, Lord, Redeemer and Guarantor. Claiming that a person could lose his salvation would mean that either God the Father refused the prayer of Jesus Christ or He could not deliver on the request of Jesus Christ. Either way, it makes God fallible, which makes Him no God at all and our faith a lie. After all, if God cannot or will not honor the prayers of Jesus Christ, what makes God the Father honor His sacrifice on the cross? Further, since Jesus Christ is God, for God the Son to ask of God the Father only to have the latter refuse, then God is divided against Himself and again is not God at all.

But what of the exhortations that Christians should continue in the faith and endure till the end? They were just that: exhortations to holy and righteous Godly living, to not use the grace of God as a justification for lasciviousness. It is one of those apparent tensions or contradictions along the lines of “saved by faith alone and not works” and “faith without works is dead.” In other words, stumblingblocks that exist in the mind of those who choose not to believe, usually because of their insistence on making a thing of the spirit into a thing of this world. For how can a newly saved Christian know of the imperative not to abandon the faith and live holy unless he is told? How is he to learn true doctrine and practice and become spiritually mature unless he is taught by someone who knows these things? It is true that God seals the Christian and keeps Him in the faith. But why cannot or should not this same God use His preachers – and His Word – to tell Christians “stay in the faith” as part of the persevering process?

To put it another way, salvation is not accomplished by men, but rather the work that Jesus Christ accomplished on the cross. It is not the result of some individual human decision, but those that God predestines and elects. Yet, the fact that God requires humans to preach the gospel to other humans as part of this process – and the Bible specifically states that salvation will not happen unless this God ordained component is fulfilled – does not negate that salvation was started and finished by Jesus Christ. Such a thing as spontaneous combustion may exist, but there is no such thing as spontaneous regeneration. Another way of speaking, just as birth cannot happen unless a seed is provided (the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit in the case of Jesus Christ, human seed in all other cases), rebirth cannot happen unless a human plants the seed of the gospel.

So if there is a mandated God ordained human role starting the race (a sinner hearing the gospel and becoming born again), what prevents there from being a God ordained human role in staying in the race until the end? Again, the evangelist’s telling the not yet born again member of the elect “repent of your sins and accept Jesus Christ or perish in eternal flame” as the gospel message requires does not undo the fact that God has elected this person. In a similar fashion, the teacher’s telling the born again “you must stay in the race or perish” does not undo eternal security. Telling the truth in one area does not invalidate truth in another, and as a result the words of Jesus Christ and many other New Testament writers that promise eternal security are not contradicted by words of the same Jesus Christ and writers that speak of the need to persevere.

The best example: the parable of the sower. Jesus Christ spoke of the seeds that fell by the wayside, that fell in stony soil, that fell among the thorns, and that fell in good soil. According to those who preach that it is possible to lose one’s salvation, Jesus Christ’s own high priestly prayer contradicted what He stated mere months earlier regarding the people who would receive the gospel initially but then turn aside because of persecution or worldiness. The only way to harmonize that parable with Jesus Christ’s prayer is to conclude that rather than being born again Christians who failed to persevere, the plants that grew in the thorns and stony soil represent people who may have put their trust in religion, values, tradition, apostate Christianity, or some other form of godliness without the power thereof (or those who sought out the faith for the wrong reason, or those who were deceived, manipulated, or coerced into conversions) and as such were never born again. In that, the contrast is between both those two groups (the stony soil and the thorns) and those who fell by the wayside (meaning that they rejected the gospel out of hand) and those who received the gospel in good soil. Now please note that by implication both the first group (the wayside people who reject the gospel out of hand) and the last group (the good soil people who persevere in the faith) are the smallest. It appears that the bulk of the people are going to be in the middle two groups, people who hold onto some external form of Christianity for a time or even for all their lives. Indeed the road is narrow and the gate is strait!

But never forget that what separates the seeds that produce plants that persevere and the seeds that do not is their landing in good soil, and what makes them good soil is their measure of faith given by the sovereign God. And the same faith given by the sovereign God that creates the good soil that results in true lasting salvation is the same one that will over time (rapidly in some, less rapidly in others) produce spiritual maturity and submission that leads to obedience and good works. The same faith that caused conversion in the first place will cause good soil Christians to heed the exhortation of preachers – as well as the exhortation in the Bible – to persevere. The same Holy Spirit that works the regeneration of Christians upon their hearing the gospel will work the perseverance and eternal security of those same Christians. Why? Because it is the same Holy Spirit which is working on the same ingredient: faith. And what is the object of this faith? What the resurrected Jesus Christ did on the cross. And to whose will and glory does this take place? God the Father, the same who sent the Son and on whose behalf the Holy Spirit speaks and bears witness. (Again, eternal security requires Trinity, which is no surprise because the Bible requires the same.)

So Christian, God the Son prayed to God the Father for your eternal security in John 11:17 and it was done. Believe it, receive it, and live it for doing any other including denying it is akin to claiming that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit is in fact no God at all, for this would be a God in conflict with Himself and incapable of internal consistency of will, word and action or of keeping His promises.

Once saved is an egregious heresy.

Many New testament verses speak on losing faith and disqualifying yourself.

    Dawkinswatch,

    Hi hope you are well.

If your premise is correct than God had predestined some to become faithful and then to loose their faith.

I do not know what to believe. I think you are referring to scriptures in Galatians and Hebrews. Please present your view points on these scriptures for our edification.

    Love,

    John

I do have to admit, I have in the past been solidly for eternal security but the passage in Timothy about in the last days some losing their faith makes me wonder??

    And also Hebrews 6..

BUT, to me overall it would seem odd to me that the Lord would allow us to lose our salvation…..it doesn’t seem to be part of his nature…

I mean really can one get born again and born again…I don’t think so…..

Another one of those in house debates that the Brethren has to agree to disagree….

One of the most amazing things that my New Testament professor told me was that Paul was not a Calvinist. It seems that we have twistes the scriptures in such a way to cater to our classical theological beliefs. When in actuality, if we are fair to the scriptures, we discover that the New Testament is in fact the New Testament, fulfilling the Old one. The New Testament (NT) is an extension of the Old. We cannot understand the New Testament without the Old and vice versa. Thus, if we see the mandates of the New without having them in the context of the Old, we will lose sight of what God is actually saying. I want to make two challenges. First, could someone please show me the doctrine of eternal security in view of Num 13-15. This passage describes a people who were elected to come out of Egypt but then died in the wilderness. Or even the fall of Moses for that matter in Num 20. The second challenge is Rom 11. After reading this whole chapter, how could anyone conclude this doctrine when Paul clearly says that we “stand by faith, dont be arrogant” (Rom 11:20). I want discussion so let me know what you think.

The doctrine of perseverance has a two edge sword, we must see the biblical imperative! (2 Peter 1:8-11)

Topical organization of scriptures that refute “Eternal Security”
    1 Parable of sower
    • Mark 4:16 (Luke 8:13) “And in a similar way these are the ones on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; (they believe for a while) and they have no firm root in themselves, but are only temporary; then, when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they fall away.
    2 Fallen from grace passage:
    • Galatians 5:4 “You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.”
    3 Pruning passages:
    • John 15:5-6 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch, and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.”
    • Romans 11:19-23 “You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear; for if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will He spare you. Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in again.”
    4 Hebrews Passages:
    • Hebrews 6:4-6 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God, and put Him to open shame.
    • Hebrews 10:26-27 For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries.”
    • Hebrews 10:38-39 “But My righteous one shall live by faith; And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him. But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul.”
    5 Doctrinal Apostasy passages:
    • Acts 20:17,28-30 “And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church.” … “I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.”
    • 1 Timothy 1:18-21 “fight the good fight, keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith. Among these are HYMENAEUS and Alexander”
    • 2 Timothy 2:16-18 But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are HYMENAEUS and Philetus, men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and thus they upset the faith of some.
    • 1 Timothy 4:1 “But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons”
    • 1 Timothy 6:20-21 “O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called “knowledge”-which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith.”
    • 2 Peter 2:1 “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.”
    • 2 Peter 3:17 “You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard lest, being carried away by the error of unprincipled men, you fall from your own steadfastness”
    • 2 John 8-9 “Watch yourselves, that you might not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.”
    6 Moral Apostasy passages:
    • 1 Timothy 6:9-10 “But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang.”
    • 2 Peter 2:20-22 “For if after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment delivered to them. It has happened to them according to the true proverb, “A dog returns to its own vomit,” and, “A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire.””
    • James 5:19-20 “My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth, and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins.”
    7 Revelation passages:
    • Revelation 2:4-5 “‘But I have this against you, that you have left your first love. ‘Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you, and will remove your lampstand out of its place-unless you repent.”
    • Revelation 3:5 “‘He who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels.
    • Revelation 3:16-17 ‘So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth. ‘Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked”
    8 Old Testament passages
    • Ezekiel 18:24-26 “But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that a wicked man does, will he live? All his righteous deeds which he has done will not be remembered for his treachery which he has committed and his sin which he has committed; for them he will die. “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not right.’ Hear now, O house of Israel! Is My way not right? Is it not your ways that are not right? “When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity, and dies because of it, for his iniquity which he has committed he will die.”
EVEN REASONS WHY ETERNAL SECURITY IS FALSE
It cheapens Gods estimate of sin
It is not taught in scripture
It renders all exhortations to holiness to be irrelevant
It must “explain away” the vast majority of scripture
It encourages sinful living and false assurance
It results in false conversions that weaken the true church
It is the most destructive and deceptive lie of Satan

TWENTY LIES NOT FOUND IN SCRIPTURE
    1. Once saved always saved.
    2. Christians are no different than other sinners, except they are saved.
    3. God cannot see the Christians sin because they are covered by the blood of Christ.
    4. We can be filthy as a barnyard in body and still be saved and holy in spirit.
    5. We all sin in word, thought and deed, every moment and every day.
    6. All who have ever fallen away were never saved in the first place.
    7. That when one comes to Christ, their sins are paid for past, present and future.
    8. You can only lose fellowship with God and not salvation.
    9. God would never disown or damn one of His own children.
    10. A sheep cannot become a goat.
    11. If we sin we only lose fellowship and not relationship with God.
    12. Salvation is unconditional.
    13. If salvation cannot be earned it cannot be lost.
    14. God will not begin a work that he will not finish.
    15. Repentance is not required for salvation.
    16. Christians who say we must remain faithful to stay saved preach a works salvation.
    17. We can be “Sinning Saints” or “Backslidden Christians” and still be saved.
    18. Only at death can we ultimately be saved from sin.
    19. Christians are still sinners.
    20. I am secure because Jesus paid my sin debt in full.

The bible clearly teaches that those who believe in Christ have the gift of eternal life which cannot be lost because we are not charged with maintaining our salvation.A true believer does not cease to believe as some might say because Christ has told us that he will lose none.John 3:16 makes it very clear that those who believe shall never perish.A person can know the truth and yet still deny it thus turn to other doctrines ie arianism, modalism, etc…We are sealed by the Holy Spirit the bible says so how do we then undo what God has done. The parable of the sower distinguishes the difference between faith firmly planted rooted in Christ opposed to that rooted in something other than Christ ie the church, man, lodge membership, etc…

Present your scriptures as Brad did. Your words carry no weight and are meaningless!

    Let me help you.

Romans 8:38-39 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to seperate us from the Love of Go, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

    Brad,

    Hi hope you are well.

As to point 19 see I John 1:8 “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

If salvation were not permanent, then the doctrine of election would be called into question, the doctrine of justification would be called into question, the doctrine of sanctification would be called into question and the doctrine of glorification would be called into question, the calling of God would be called into question and therefore the work of the Father, the Son and the Spirit would all be called into question as well. And so what makes the whole of the doctrines of salvation come together and stay together is the eternality of salvation, the perseverance of the saints.

This is supported, of course, by many, many scriptures. But passages, for example, like John 5:24, “Truly, truly I say to you, he who hears My Word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and does not come into judgment but has passed out of death into life.” John 3:16 and 18, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. He who believes in Him is not judged, or condemned.”

Other passages perhaps familiar to us as well, John chapter 6 verse 37, “All that the Father gives Me shall come to Me and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out, for I have come down from heaven not to do My own will but the will of Him who sent Me and this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me, I lose none, but raise it up on the last day. This is the will of My Father that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” There is that monumental text in which we see that no one falls through the cracks in the process of salvation. Whom the Father chooses, He draws, whom He draws He draws to Christ, whomever is drawn to Christ comes, and when he comes, Christ receives him, keeps him and raises him on the last day. The same thing is stated another way by Jesus in the tenth chapter of John, verses 27 to 29, “My sheep hear My voice and I know them and they follow Me and I give eternal life to them and they shall never perish and no one shall snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand, I and the Father are one.” Indicating the security of the believer, He knows who we are, He holds us in His hand. The Father holds us in His hand and no one can take us out.

Many other scriptures are worthy of our attention. I think of John 4:14, “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” Once the well is opened up, it never runs dry. It is a wellspring of eternal life. In 1 Corinthians chapter 1 we read that those who are in Christ, verse 8, 1 Corinthians 1, are confirmed to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are confirmed to the end and found blameless in the end. Well what if we sin? Well we do sin but our sins having been covered by Christ leave us blameless. And verse 9, so important, “God is faithful through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ, our Lord.” God is faithful who called you to confirm you all the way to the end and bring you blameless into His eternal presence. And again, 1 Thessalonians chapter 5 verses 23 and 24, “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely, may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” There’s that same affirmation that God who sanctified us will preserve us complete in tact, blameless again at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The next verse, verse 24 says, “Faithful is He who calls you and He also will bring it to pass.” He was faithful to call you into salvation, He will be faithful to preserve you until that salvation is complete. And I remind you again of 1 John 2 and verse 19, “They went out from us but they were not really of us. If they had been of us, they would have remained with us. They went out in order that it might be shown they are not all of us.”

First of all, it does not mean that Christians don’t ever fail. It does not mean that Christians don’t fail seriously and severely in their Christian lives. We do. What it does mean is what the Confession says it means, they do not completely nor finally fail. Fail, yes. Fail severely, yes. Fail repeatedly, yes. Fail completely, no. Fail finally, no.

    God bless Randy

    Randy,

    Hi hope you are well.

    Here are some comments.

I John 5:16-17 “If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.”

Mathew 12:31 “Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men, but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.”

Revelation 2:10 “…. be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”

Those are scriptures. Now listen to this. What about people who were converted and then turn their backs on the Lord. I know one young lady, a very loving and deicated Christian who abndonned the faith for Islam. I also know of those who have strayed away permently. Do you think they are still saved? Do you think they were never saved at all?

See Mathew 25. The parable of the virgins. Five wise and five foolish. Only the wise joined the bridegroom while the foolish were left out.

Again Mathew 25 the parable of the talents. The wise investors of the talents were rewarded while the foolish one was cast into utter darkness.

I Peter 4:18 “And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?”

Note God was faithful unto Isreal whom he made the covenant with. God kept his part of the agreement. It was Isreal who fell away from God.

Also see Romans 8:28 above. Nothing can seperate us from God. Yet some choose to deny God and turn their backs on the faith. I think this harmonizes the scriptures.

When one becomes a Christian all sins are forgiven. Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said unto them, repent, and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall rfeceived the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

Clearly at conversion all sins are forgiven. But what of those who turn their backs on God.
See 2 Peter 2:22 in Brad’s comments. They are dogs returning to their own vomit.

To summerize my conclusion, One can fall away after conversion. The only way this is possible is if the believer turns his back on the Lord. This is the sin that leads to death or the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

    Love,

    John

Nice post Randy! Indeed the whole “imperative” of salvation is the triune God Himself, (2 Cor.13:14). And as St. Paul says in the same chapter: “Test-yourselves if you are in the faith. Prove-yourselves; or do you not realize yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you? Unless you are unapproved (fail the test).” (2 Cor. 13:5)

The whole reality of Christian salvation is Christ, and Christ “within” the believer! It is a life, again as St. Paul says: “For to me living is Christ..” (Phil.1:21) As too in Col. 1:27: “Who is Christ in you, the hope (secure) of glorification.” Again the reality is the imperative life of Christ Himself within the life of the believer, as the whole Church of God! And here there is never failure – “Now to the One being able to guard you without stumbling and to set you before the glory of HIM blameless, with exultation-rejoicing, to the only God, etc..” (Jude 1:24, lit. Greek)

    Hello John,

Sorry to trouble you with my meaningless words but to prove the biblical point see John 6:37-40 which tells us that Christ will lose none of whom the father has given to him.Galatians 3:1-3 makes it clear that our works do not perfect us but faith in Christ which comes by hearing and believing. And please explain how salvation is lost when John 3:16 clearly states that whosoever believes in our Lord Jesus Christ SHALL NEVER PERISH means if we can lose our salvation and perish in the hell fire?If we are not good enough to earn our salvation then how can we possibly maintain it?Ephesians 1:13 says we are sealed in him by the holy spirit which tells me that I am his forever.I firmly believe that salvation is of the Lord and only the Lord without any help from the helpless believer.

Let’s look at this text in 2 Peter 2:22. But to do so, we must look at the whole context of verses 17-22. “These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom the black darkness has been reserved.” (Verse 17) This verse sets up the whole section here. It is talking about the false prophets and false teachers of the beginning of the chapter, (2 Pet.2:1).

I will not take up further blog space here, but I think my exegetical point is made. This whole chapter, and especially verse 22 (a quote from Prov. 26:11..a wisdom book) shows that the subject is not about the salvation of anyone. But the loss and reality of people that are not and never were regenerate…”A dog returns to its own..etc., and “A sow, after washing (the appearance), returns to wallowing in the mire.” Such language indicates that they simply return to their real habitat and manner.

But the loss and reality of people that are not and never were regenerate…

This argument is foolishness that people were never saved in the first place! So you are telling that a fool like Billy Graham is once saved always saved even though now he is a demonic liberal who thinks they are also other ways to God?

Things are going well, thanks for asking.

John thanks for your comments. You bring up some very good scriptures. I believe your saying in these scripture text, that a true believer can choose to walk away from God and return back to there sinful life? Or as you put it 2 Peter 2:22, They are dogs returning to their own vomit. First of all we must under- stand who is it the bible is talking about in the scriptures you gave, are they all saved? And second who walked away from God? Were they truly saved?

Hebrews 13:5, Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you. Lets just say if a true believer walks away from God, we have the assurance that he will never leave us or forsake us. He will never let go of a true believer he can’t.

John chapter 6 verse 37, “All that the Father gives Me shall come to Me and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out, for I have come down from heaven not to do My own will but the will of Him who sent Me and this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me, I lose none, but raise it up on the last day. This is the will of My Father that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”

Are the people we meet who say that they are saved then turn away from God to false teachings or there sinful desires truly saved?

Romans 1:18-22,18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools.

1 John 2 and verse 19, “They went out from us but they were not really of us. If they had been of us, they would have remained with us. They went out in order that it might be shown they are not all of us.”

    John 2:23-25,
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.

John 6:63-66,63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. 65 And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”
66 From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.

John if you would read all of 2 Peter 2,starting at verse 1 you would understand who the bible is talking about it”s not believers.
John, I no there are more scriptures you mentioned, but it’s really hard to discuss 4 or five scriptures at once. Hopefully we can continue to get to those scriptures.

So to summarize my conclusion, A true believer will never fall away. He can not because he is kept secure by Gods power.
Jude 1:24-25, Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling,
    And to present you faultless,
Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
    25 To God our Savior
    Who alone is wise,
    Be glory and majesty,
    Dominion and power
    Both now and forever.
    Amen.

    Brad,

If you look at the whole of 2 Peter chapter 2; we have the deceptions of the false prophets and teachers (2:1-3). The doom and judgment of the same (4-9). The depravity and practise of them also (10-17). And then their judgement and full apostasy from Christian profession (18-22). There is nothing here about the loss of any real regenerate Christian souls! (This is rather quickly written by me, but to the point)

    Hello Hubison,

    Hi hope you are well.

Sorry to sound harsh but I consider my words meaningless as well. As scripture says “Let God be true and every man a liar.” And you responded with scripture which was my hope.

To tell you the truth I have not come to any conclusions on this matter. Brad brings many scriptures that point that we could loose salvation.

As far as Ephesian 1:13 it is true all believers have the Holy Spirit. But what is the unpardonable sin to blasphemy the Holy Spirit.

I agree that we are not saved by works as you mention in conjecture with Galatians 3. Yet that does not mean one cannot turn their back on God.

As far as John 3:16 there is more to salvation than just belief. As James says even the devils believe and tremble. James 2:19. We must examine the whole Word of God and compare scripture to scripture in these matters.

I disagree with what you saw about the parable of the sower. Clearly the Word of God started some life in the second and third soils unlike the rocky road where none had a chance to grow.

Finally how do you explain those who turn away from the faith? Were they never saved at all then?

    Love,

    John

    Randy,

    Hi hope you are well.

2 Peter talks about false prophets intially I agree. But then please explain to me verse 20 where these have “escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.” Then verse 21 where it says “it had have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness.”

Now is verse 20 and 21 talking about the false teachers or to them “promised liberty” in verse 19.

If one was apostate to begin with then they could not have been cleansed and also have never left their vomit.

Finally the scriptures I feel point to loosing salvation are in Hebrews and Galatians. Perhaps we can look at these next.

As I mentioned to Hubison I have not come to a conclusion in this matter.

Furthermore I would appreaciate an answer to the same question I asked Hubsion. What about those who seemed saved and claimed to be believers and then have turned away? Were they never saved?

    Love,

Brad, I will leave Billy Graham and his ministry to God! He was always but an evangelist, and not a scholar or theolog type. But in theology a certain Arminian! Perhaps his Arminian doctrine lead him into this further error? He is now an old man, and I shall again leave him to God.

PS I am myself both Catholic & Reformed. But with agreement with some E. Orthodox Trinitarian doctrine.

Nobody answered my real question – So you are telling that a fool like Billy Graham is once saved always saved even though now he is a demonic liberal who thinks they are also other ways to God?

  21. irishanglican said

2 Peter 2:20 seems to indicate that to be within the visible Church, and within both the theology and Judeo-Christian world-view is part of this. We must remember that both Calvin and Luther taught that the Church of God on earth was a mixed group (elect & non-elect) both known only to God.

When posed with real problem about the words and deeds of OSAS hypocrites it’s easy to leave everything to God? How convenient! There is no point discussing anything but every time I cannot answer or agree with I will just leave it to God who know who is saved and who is not?

  23. irishanglican said

    Brad,

As I said, Billy G. should be left to God! And the real doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints, does not “present” the idea of just ‘once saved, always saved.’ SEE the word “perseverance” here! The true saint of God “walks in the light!” (See, 1 John 1:5-10..but note, the believer-saint still has sin (in Him, Rom.7:13-25).

    Brad,

    Hi hope you are well.

I don’t think Billy Graham will be in heaven if he doesn’t repent. And from what I understand he has a lot to repent from. Galatians talks about the devil coming as an angle of light.

I think that is a straight enough answer.

It is not what WE think! But what God thinks…we must let God be God as Luther said! We have all of us fallen at times, in both our walk and our doctrine. But, we should not judge personality..but only doctrine, teaching and of course how one behaves in the Christian ethic.

And I speak as both pastor & teacher myself. Walk softly gents!

    Your question to me is?
What about those who seemed saved and claimed to be believers and then have turned away? Were they never saved?

I thought I answered that in my comments? Guess not.
They were never saved. As I wrote in my comment.

    Amen.

    BEFORE I ANY FURTHER were do you stand on salvation? This will help me to better answer your post. I wrote earlier about this when I said;
If salvation were not permanent, then the doctrine of election would be called into question, the doctrine of justification would be called into question, the doctrine of sanctification would be called into question and the doctrine of glorification would be called into question, the calling of God would be called into question and therefore the work of the Father, the Son and the Spirit would all be called into question as well. And so what makes the whole of the doctrines of salvation come together and stay together is the eternality of salvation, the perseverance of the saints.

    Randy,

Thanks for your concern. I am a believer who tries to follow everything the Bible tells me to do. I was baptized at age twenty and though I have been through trials and struggles in the twenty years since I was born again I have kept the faith.

John,Randy.. How about the doctrine/teaching of Apostasy? Luther taught it, but also that all the elect would be in heaven.

  33. Brad said

It is not what WE think! But what God thinks – is hogwash because God has expressed what He things in his word including about unrepentant liars like Billy Graham who have been tested:

    RV 2:2 “I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars;

RV 21:8 “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

  34. irishanglican said

    Brad,

You sound like a young Christian? Zeal is nice, but as St. Paul said, it should have “knowledge” (Rom.10:2). This is really needed with all Christians, but also humility is sadly lacking today. And most of all in blogdom!

And the Word of God MUST be interpreted, i.e. exegesis! The Book of Revelation also has context and epistemology, it did not fall out of the sky!

  35. randy said

John; I appreciate your honesty, about your trials and struggels. I understand because I have had my own trials and struggles. And that was with the world, now that I am a believer, I do have trials but my struggles have lessened. When I was taught about the sovereignty of God,a lot of the questions I had about the bible, can you lose your salvation, did I chose God or did God chose me,did God die for the whole world, are just for the elect.
And there’s more but what I am trying to say is that God is in control of everything. Even man and also mans heart.
One thing the bible has taught me,is that God can do what ever he wants, with out my permission.
God bless John, I hope you will come to the understanding of the sovereignty of God it lets God be God.
Hope this helps, your brother in Christ
    Randy

Now your question irishanglican,How about the doctrine/teaching of Apostasy? I have no problem with that, I believe in the doctrine/teaching of Apostasy?

  36. irishanglican said

    Randy,

As do I, but it is not an easy or comfortable doctrine. The worst case is that of those like Matt. 7:21, “Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father..” To be able to say “Lord, Lord” (proper doctrine spoken?)is not enough, there must be some sense of Christ-like obedience. We must “be” what we claim! This should cause us all to tremble before our God! And the test, as to some sense of “perseverance” also!

Is is possible to know mentally correct doctrine, and yet not really “know” and obey God in Christ? In other words, salvation, as the parable of the soils, knows only one ground of reality..those that produce the real fruit! Some of course obey more fully, etc. These are the tuff questions of texts like 1 Peter 5:8-9, etc.

PS…Every modern Christian should read Bonhoeffer’s, The Cost of Discipleship!

    Fr.R.

  38. randy said

Irishanglican, thanks It is not a comfortable doctrine ,but so are a lot of other doctrines. It’s not uncomfortable if you believe in sound doctrine.

    What is an apostate?

    Answer

The word apostasy comes from the Greek apostasia, which is translated “falling away” in 2 Thessalonians 2:3. The word is closely related to the Greek word for “divorce.”

Apostates are those who fall away from the true faith, abandoning what they formerly professed to believe. The term describes those whose beliefs are so deficient as to place them outside the pale of true Christianity. For example, a liberal denomination that denies the authority of Scripture or the deity of Christ is an apostate denomination.

True Christians do not apostatize. Those who fall away into apostasy demonstrate that their faith was never real to begin with (1 John 2:19).

  39. irishanglican said

    Randy,

We are in basic agreement here. I am in my late 50’s, and I have been a Christian for over 35 years, and a priest-presbyter for nearly 20 now. I have seen those who I thought solid Christians depart from the Faith. It has not been easy to watch! But indeed God is faithful and does not change.

    Fr. Robert, Phil. 3:7-14

PS Before I became a priest, I was a Royal Marine officer, and give up my military career for ordination. And yes, sometimes I miss my time there. Gulf War 1. So I have felt and feel the cost of discipleship!

Character assassinate the messenger when you don’t like the message? That is what you are doing! And it doesn’t change the fact that for the last 30 years Billy Graham has been demonized and has associated with liberals to win the love of the world. So let him enjoy hell where he belongs even though he is OSAS!

  41. irishanglican said

    Brad,

You need to grow-up mate, it is you who are assassinating someones character. I too do not care for Billy Graham’s ministry so much, nor his theology, but I will leave his eternal judgement to God alone. As you should also!

So what is the definition of a liberal? And does God save them? The latter, God does indeed save them that are HIS! (2 Tim. 2:19..Known only to Him too I might add!)

Jesus Christ was sent to die on the cross for all mans sins and whosoever believeth in him shall be saved. It is 100% true that when a person accepts Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior that their name is permanently written in the Lambs Book of Life. Yes we all sin and stumble back to past sins and sometimes repeat those sins, but it is by Grace and by Grace alone that we are saved. It doesnt matter what religion you are because the one and only thing that matters is if you have accepted Jesus Christ as your savior. Yes, different religions have different beliefs, but Jesus says that whosever believeth in me shall not perish but have everlasting life. ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED IS TRUE BECAUSE OF THE WORDS JESUS SAID IN THE SCRIPTURE HE SAID AND I TYPED IN. YES CHRISTIANS DO STILL STUMBLE AND SOMETIMES STRAY AWAY FROM HIS WORD BUT ONCE AGAIN THE LORD CLEARLY STATES THAT FOR WHOSOVER BELIEVES IN ME SHALL BE SAVED. THEIR IS 1 AND ONLY 1 SIN THAT KEEPS A PERSON FROM EVERLASTING LIFE AND THAT IS THE UNPARDONABLE SIN WHICH IS NEVER BELIEVING AND ACCEPTING CHRIST AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR. ALSO I AM NOT SAYING THAT BORN AGAIN CHRISTIANS CAN JUST LOOK AT LIFE AND THINK I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT BECAUSE WE ARE CALLED BY GOD TO BE DIFFERENT FROM THE WORLD, HOWEVER WE ALL CHRISTIANS AND NON CHRISTIANS WILL ALWAYS SIN. AS HUMANS WE COULD HAVE BEEN BORN AND NEVER SAID OR DONE ANYTHING AT ALL JUST A SITTING STONE AND BECAUSE ADAM AND EVE BROUGHT SIN IN THE WORLD WE ONLY HAVE SALVATION THROUGH ACCEPTING JESUS CHRIST AS OUR PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOR BECAUSE ALL HAVE SINED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD BUT THOSE WHO HAVE ACCEPTED CHRIST AS THEIR SAVIOR EVEN THOSE WHO STRAY AWAY ARE SAVED FOREVER. IT MAY SEEM UNGODLY TO BELIEVE THAT A MURDERER CAN STILL BE SAVED FOREVER BUT A SIN AS GREAT AS THAT IN MANS EYES IS STILL A SIN. AND SIN IS SIN THEIR IS NO GOOD SIN AND BAD SIN, SIN IS SIN AND THATS IT. IT IS YOUR PERSONAL WALK WITH THE LORD THAT MATTERS BECAUSE ITS YOUR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM AND NOT WITH YOU AND OTHERS. SO DONT LOOK AT SOMEONE STRAYING FROM CHRIST AS LOSING YOUR SALVATION BUT ASK FOR FORGIVENESS AND IT IS PAID FOR BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST THAT WE HAVE ETERNAL SALVATION. LOOK AT THE TWO CRIMINALS NEXT TO JESUS ON THE CROSS BOTH WERE CRIMINALS AND SINNERS BUT ONLY ONE ACCEPTED HIM AS HIS SAVIOR AND THAT PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP AND ACCEPTANCE OF HIM AS YOUR SAVIOR IS THE ONLY ANSWER. AS CHRISTIANS SOME CAN NOTICE THAT TEMPTATIONS FROM SATAN AND THE WORLD MAY BECOME HARDER AND MORE FREQUENT BUT ALL SINS ARE FORGIVEN ONCE YOU ACCEPTED CHRIST BECAUSE HE KNEW THE BEGGINING AND THE END ALL OF WHAT WE ARE DOING AND SAYING JUST AS I TYPE THIS HE ALREADY KNEW WHAT I WOULD BE FACED WITH BUT HE GAVE US FREEDOM OF CHOICE AND ITS OUR DECISIONS IN THOSE SITUATIONS THAT HELP US GROW STRONGER THROUGH TRIALS SO PLEASE REMEMBER THAT ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED IS TRUE BUT IT DOESNT GIVE US THE RIGHT TO JUST GO ON DOING WRONG WHEN IF YOU TRUELLY ACCEPTED HIM AS YOUR SAVIOR YOU KNOW WHAT HE HAS SAID TO DO IN IT. PRAY TO HIM AND HE WILL LEAD YOU TO TWO ROADS EVERYDAY. YOUR AT A DECISION AND THERE ARE TWO ROADS ONE NARROW ROAD LEADING TO LIFE EVERLASTING AND A BROAD ROAD LEADING TO DESTRUCTION. ITS YOUR CHOICE SO CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE AND ALWAYS REMEMBER OUR SINS WERE PAID FOR BEFORE WE WERE EVEN THOUGHT OF BY PARENTS OR PEOPLE OF THIS WORLD BUT YOU MUST COME AND MAKE SURE YOU MAKE THE ONE OF TWO CHOICES ACCEPTING HIM AS YOUR SAVIOR AND BEING SAVED ETERNALLY OR REJECTING HIM AND BEING SENT TO HELL ETERNALLY. HE WILL HAVE TWO BOOKS BY HIS SIDE THE BOOK OF LIFE AND DEATH AND ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE ACCEPTED JESUS CHRIST AS THEIR SAVIOR NO MATTER THEIR WORLDLY WORKS OR FAULTS WILL BE SAVED. REMEMBER THAT ALWAYS AND IN TIMES OF WANDERING WHAT TO DO IN A SITUATION REMEMBER HE IS WATCHING OVER US AND LISTENING TO OUR PRAYERS AND ANSWERS THEM IN HIS TIME AND HIS TIME ONLY. I HOPE THOSE NON BELIEVERS IN CHRIST READ THIS AND REMEMBER ACCEPTING CHRIST AS YOUR SAVIOR IS THE ONE AND ONLY WAY INTO LIFE IN HEAVEN.

  43. ronnie moore said

I HAVE READ ALL OF YOUR WORDS AND FOR THOSE WHO WANDER IF A PERSON WHO ACCEPTS JESUS CHRIST AND STRAYS AWAY AND DOES WRONG THINK THAT THEY AREN’T TRUE CHRISTIANS OR AREN’T TRUELLY SAVED YOU MUST REMEMBER THAT ADAM AND EVE BROUGHT SIN INTO THE WORLD BY BREAKING GODS COMMANDMENTS OF NOT EATING THE FRUIT FROM THE TREE OF LIFE. THERFORE EVERYONE BROUGHT INTO THIS WORLD AFTER THIS POINT WAS ALREADY A SINNER AT BIRTH, BUT GOD SENT HIS SON TO DIE ON THE CROSS FOR ALL MANS SIN THOSE WHO SIN SOMETIMES AND THOSE LESS OFTEN. WE ARE SINNERS BECAUSE SIN WAS BROUGHT INTO THE WORLD BY DISOBEDIENCE AND JESUS CAME TO THIS EARTH BORN OF A VIRGIN MARY TO SPREAD GODS WORD AND KNEW AND TOLD THOSE AROUND HIM WHO LISTENED TO HIS PREACHINGS AND TOLD SPECIFIC PEOPLE THAT BEFORE THE END OF SPECIFIC DAYS THAT DIFFERENT PEOPLE WOULD DENY HIM NUMBERS OF TIMES BEFORE THE DAYS END. HE KNEW THAT FOR ANY MAN WOMAN OR CHILD OF ANY RACE COLOR OR CREED TO BE SAVED AND RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE HE MUST DIE ON THE CROSS AND ON THE THIRD DAY BE RISEN INTO HEAVEN. AND FROM THAT POINT EVEN SO FAR BACK FROM TODAY ALL WERE SINNERS EVEN THE MOST KINDEST PEOPLE YOU KNOW ARE SINNERS AND THAT FOR THEIR ETERNAL SALVATION THE MUST ACCEPT HIM AS THERE PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOR AND THAT BY DOING SO THEIR NAME WOULD BE WRITTEN IN THE LAMBS BOOK OF LIFE.
ONCE YOU ARE BORN AGAIN, NOTHING CAN SEPERATE YOU FROM CHRIST BECAUSE IT WAS ALL COVERED BY THE BLOOD HE SHED ON THE CROSS. ONE SIN AND ONE SIN ONLY KEEPS A PERSON OF ANY SEX,RACE,CREED,AND EVEN RELIGIOUS BELIEF AND THAT IS THE UNPARDONABLE SIN WHICH IS NOT ACCEPTING AND TRUELLY BELIEVING IN HIS WORD THAT HE IS GOD AND HE IS THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIGHT AND NO MAN SHALL ENTER THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN BUT THROUGH HIM. PEOPLE THINKING CRIMINALS, KILLERS, OR OTHER REALLY BAD WORDLY CRIMES CAN BE SAVED AND RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE. HE DIDNT SAY YOU PEOPLE WHO ARE GOOD SOMETIMES ARENT THIS OR THAT ARE SAVED BUT THAT WHOSOVER CALLS UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD IS SAVED. I AM OF THE BAPTIST RELIGION,BUT I THINK SOMETIMES PEOPLE LOOK AT RELIGION AS BEING WHAT SAVES. WELL IT ISNT ITS THAT PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP AND ACCEPTANCE OF HIM AS YOUR SAVIOR THAT SAVES AND SAVES YOU ETERNALLY. LOOK AT CATHOLICS, BAPTISTS, AND OTHER RELIGIONS IN THE U.S. AND IF ANY OF THEM DONT TELL YOU THAT THIS RELATIONSHIP AND ACCEPTANCE OF JESUS CHRIST AND HIM ALONE IS THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN THEN PLEASE GET OUT OF THEIR BECAUSE JESUS CHRIST, NOT RELIGION ,OR BELIEFS OF THIS WORLD OR PERSONAL WORKS SAVE YOU ETERNALLY. ONLY A PERSONAL ACCEPTANCE OF HIM AS YOUR SAVIOR SAVES YOU SO WHY REJECT IT THROUGH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE. MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE NOT FOR ME OR ANYONE ELSE BUT FOR YOURSELF BECAUSE IT IS BETWEEN YOU AND THE LORD JESUS CHRIST THAT MATTERS. HOPE TO SEE YOU IN HEAVEN.
