Mormon Church Finally Admits That Joseph Smith Was Polygamous False Prophet!

Posted by Job on January 25, 2008

LDS finally admits that Joseph Smith was a polygamist, and that he told different versions of the “first vision.”

The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting in this article that a new LDS produced and approved manual is conceding what historians and others who have researched Mormonism have known all along; Mormon founding prophet Joseph Smith was a polygamist!

Those of us who have known about Joseph Smith’s multiple wives (including one marriage to a 14-year old child) have one thing to say, “Welcome aboard, what took you so long?”

But even more shocking to me than their admission of Smith’s practice of polygamy (after all these years of denial) is another admission made by LDS. This one is even more damaging to their house of cards:

The first chapter about Smith’s “First Vision,” in which he claimed to see God and Jesus in a grove of trees, includes a footnote about how Smith described the encounter in different ways to different people.

Holy smokes! I never thought I’d live to see the day when Latter-day Saints would admit to that.

This problem of Joseph Smith telling conflicting versions of an event that he supposedly experienced is yet another incidence that critics of Mormonism have been citing for years only to be told by well-intentioned Mormons that we’re crazy.

I believe that with the advent of the internet, the Mormon organization finally has to start dealing with these issues instead of sticking their head in the sand and telling their members to “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.”

We’ve been telling Mormons this stuff for years while Mormon apologists have accused us of being anti-Mormon liars who don’t know their history and beliefs as well as they do, and since they haven’t been taught this stuff in their local Ward, then it couldn’t possibly be true . . . could it?

I have to give credit to the LDS organization for their candidness and finally admitting to documented truths that they and we have known all along. If they continue this new trend of telling the truth I imagine that they’re going to see a change in their membership numbers.

I think you may have linked to the wrong post. Did you mean to link to this one?

Pilgrim: That is what comes up when I click on it, right?

We agree that LDS admitted that Joseph Smith was a polygamist. The false prophet thing was my interpretation, because actual prophets are not supposed to tell variant versions of the same vision. If they admitted that he did, then that is admitting that he was a false prophet.

I agree that this is a positive step for the church in not shying away from complicated issues in official manuals. I disagree that Mormons try to deny that Joseph Smith was a polygamist, it is right there in the Doctrine and Covenants, a key book in the LDS canon of scripture. It would be more accurate to say that the RLDS have tried to deny Joseph Smith practicing and teaching polygamy, that was the main issue of the split and the reason that section is not found in the RLDS D&C.

That there are multiple versions of the telling of the First Vision is also not a secret within the church. I learned that in seminary and at firesides. The Church publishes the version they do because that was the intent of Joseph Smith, to sit down himself and write down the story in full as there were “many reports circulating” at the time disputing the facts of his own experience.

If the Mormon Church comes across as trying to deny certain elements of their history I think it is because of the history of persecution and false statements the Church has faced from its earliest days. There still is that cultural feel within the Mormon church that others are ‘out to smear our good name and misrepresent us’ and so they react by ‘sticking to their guns’ on issues that they feel represent the core of their faith. I think that is understandable sociologically.

You say that the fact that Joseph Smith was a polygamist makes him a false prophet…I’ll give you two examples of true prophets admitted and confessed by all Christianity and were polygamist…Abraham, and Jacob(Israel). Next you say that having several versions of the same story makes him false. What variant makes them so different? Truth be told he only gave more details when telling the story to people in confidence. He was a Prophet of God and your lies won’t hide that.(The church never denied either of your accusations.)

One more thing, it was not uncommon for 14 year olds to be married in the 1800’s. They weren’t seen as children then.

“He was a Prophet of God and your lies won’t hide that” followed by “the church never denied either of your accusations.” Ha ha ha!

By the way, Kevin, is the Garden of Eden in America, or isn’t it? Is New Jerusalem in Missouri (or is it Ohio?) or isn’t it? Have any evidence of the existence of Lamaanites, Nephites, or ANY of the people in the Book of Mormon and the other books been found as they have been in the BIBLE?

Hey, do you think that God LIKES you claiming that Abraham and Jacob were adulterers like Smith? And that speaks nothing of the other IMMORAL things that Smith did, not to mention the things that were ILLEGAL, LIKE POLYGAMY. From my reading of the Bible, God very much opposes you defaming people and bearing false witness. What does your Bible say?

  7. Kevin,

You are INCORRECT. The average age for being married at that time was over 20 years old!

    Wives of Joseph Smith

If Mormons accepted the Lord Jesus is God with the Father and Holy Spirit, they’d be able to accept that when Jesus said one wife and to marry anyone else’s is adultery, they never would have feel for Joseph Smith Junior’s lies. Once Jesus laid down the rule, that was the end of polygamy for anyone claiming to follow Jesus.

Smith married women who already had husbands. He was a pedophile, adulterer, polygamist and a false teacher. That apostate had more wives and little girls than Muhammad!

Joseph Smith was not a polygamist. Read the histories that have been researched by various other sects of the Church of Jesus Christ History.

Also read the Book of Mormon itself, it condemns polygamy and concubines.
Abraham had what I would consider concubines, and David and Solomon had concubines and plural wives.
Both condemed and called an abomination in the Book of Mormon.

Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives, and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord,
Wherefore, thus saith the Lord, I have led this people forth out of the land of Jerusalem, by the power of mine arm, that I might raise up unto me a righteous branch from the fruit of the loins of Joseph.
Wherefore, I, the Lord God, will not suffer that this people shall do like unto them of old.
Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none: For I, the Lord God, delighteth in the chastity of women.
And whoredoms are an abomination before me: thus saith the Lord of hosts.

If Joseph Smith wasn’t a polygamist, then what was he? He was involved in numerous plural marriages. Is the term “plural marriage” used to make the claim that Joseph wasn’t polyganous? In all fairness, less than 20% of the original Latter Day Saints practiced plural marriage. There are many, many fine LDS people walking the streets. They believe Christ is the Savior, that God created the earth, that it is right to be kind to others, and so on. All religions and derivations of those religions are involved in controversies at one point or another. “Let he who hath not sinned cast the first stone…”

  10. Gregnauman, you quoted your cult book’s verse Jacob 2:24 of the BOM which says:

24 Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord.

This fails to agree with True Scriptures, the Bible with 66 books in which God says the following to David about his many wives.

2 Samuel 12:8 (New American Standard Bible)

8 ‘I also gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your care, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added to you many more things like these!

    God gave David the women!

Here’s what you and even some Christians don’t understand. God allowed David many things including wealth and wives, until David sinned against God by his sleeping with another man’s wife and murder of her husband. Joseph Smith Junior slept with many men’s wives and the difference between David and Smith is that Jesus declared that Smith had no right to multiple wives in Matthew 19. David was allowed a concession that was never granted to Smith and GOD gave David the women. God did not give Smith all those women he married, many who were other mens’ wives.

The Mormon’s own wayward prophesies on the matter even conflict. One moment they condone and promote polygamy, the next they claim it’s bad WHEN THE GOVERNMENT SAID THEY BETTER STOP IT.

You know D&C 132 contradicts the commands of Christ and acts like Smith was entitled to women that were not his. It’s lies, all lies.

Smith was a polygamist and you know FLDS keeps your cult’s doctrines better than you other Mormons, but you’re all caught up in a wayward cult regardless.

The “jesus” of all sects of Mormonism is a false jesus and not the True Jesus Christ of the Bible. There are only 2 religions in the world. 1 is the true doctrine of God in the Bible with 66 books and all others are FALSE, Mormonism included.

I am concerned that there is so much discussion on the matter of Joseph Smith being a false prophet, there is such a simple answer. Once this truth is discovered then no human can continue to believe in any of Smiths Morman Religion because the very basest of proclaimed truths, his first writing of his “experience” with God, is False.

    From website:
1832 account of first vision. Handwriting: Frederick G. Williams & Joseph Smith Jr. (the story itself is in the handwriting of Joseph Smith Jr.) recorded between summer 1832 and November 1832. Spelling is from the original.

…a being who makith Laws and decreeeth and bindeth all things in theirbounds who filleth Eternity who was and is and will be fron all Eternity to Eternity and when I considered all these things andthat [that] being Seeketh such to worship him as worship him inspirit and in truth therefore I cried unto the Lord for mercy forthere was none else to whom I could go and {to} obtain mercy andthe Lord heard my cry in the wilderness and while in [the] attitude of calling upon the Lord [in the 16th* year of my age] a pillar of {fire} lightabove the brightness of the Sun at noon day come down fromabove and rested upon me and I was filld with the Spirit of God and the [Lord] opened the heavens upon me and I Saw the Lord and he Spake unto me Saying Joseph [my son] thy Sins are forgiven thee. go thy [way] walk in my Statutes and keep my commandments behold I am the Lord of glory I was crucifyed for the world that all those who believe on my name may have Eternal life [behold] the world lieth in sin {and} at this time and none doeth good no not one they have turned asside from the Gospel and keep not [my] commandments…

    1835 account, written by Warren A. Cowdery. Monday Nov. 9th. . .
I knew not who was right or who was wrong, but considered it of the first importance to me that I should be right, in matters of so much moment, matter involving eternal consequences. Being thus perplexed in mind I retired to the silent grove and there bowed down before the Lord, under a realizing sense (if the bible be true) ask and you shall receive, knock and it shall be opened, seek and you shall find, and again, if any man lack wisdom, let of God who giveth to all men liberally & upbraideth not. Information was what I most desired at this time, and with a fixed determination to obtain it, I called on the Lord for the first time in the place above stated, or in other words, I made a fruitless attempt to pray My tongue seemed to be swoolen in my mouth, so that I could not utter, I heard a noise behind me like some one walking towards me. I strove again to pray, but could not; the noise of walking seemed to draw nearer, I sprang upon my feet and looked round, but saw no person or thing that was calculated to produce the noise of walking. I kneeled again, my mouth was opened and my tongue loosed; I called on the Lord in mighty prayer. A pillar of fire appeared above my head; which presently rested down upon me, and filled me with un-speakable joy. A personage appeared in the midst of this pillar of flame, which was spread all around and yet nothing consumed. Another personage soon appeared like unto the first: he said unto me thy sins are forgiven thee. He testified also unto me that Jesus Christ is the son of God. I saw many angels in this vision. I was about 14 years old when I received this first communication. .

The True Prophet Hears From God Through Dreams:
    Old Testament

Num 12:6 And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.

This is the word of the Lord, there is no denying that God guaranteed that we would know a true prophet because he would come in a vision and speak to the prophet in a dream. In neither of these original accountings did Joseph or Cowdery claim to be alseep or dreaming, both claim to be outside in prayer at noon, both clearly recalled where there were at the time it supposedly happened. Mormons beware:

False Prophets Will Be Numerous, And Very Successful:
    New Testament

Mat 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

2 Pet 2:1 [NIV] But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them–bringing swift destruction on themselves.
2 Pet 2:2 [NIV] Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.
2 Pet 2:3 [NIV] In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

Very simple, Joseph Smith was a false prophet and anyone who claims/practices Mormonism as their religion is bringing swift destruction on themselves.

I investigated the mormon church for 30 years and this church is racist and false. My husband is african-american and he suffered a lot racism in Salt lake City. Joseph ” the prophet” had several mental conditions and he broke the law and raped many underage girls.
