Satan Is Real And After Your Kids: Mass Effect Video Game Depicting Graphic Fornication And Nudity Marketed To Children

(CNSNews.com) – A new, best-selling video game, Mass Effect,
made for the Microsoft Xbox 360 console, allows the characters to
engage in explicitly graphic sexual intercourse. Some game experts and
pro-family analysts say Mass Effect is marketed to young kids and
presents a moral danger to them and that the companies making and
marketing the game should be prosecuted. The game is “clearly
marketed to minors,” Cathy Ruse, a lawyer and senior fellow for legal
studies at the Family Research Council, told Cybercast News Service. “There
are cultural implications for feeding porn to kids in this way,” and
“when you do this, you’re teaching them a distorted lesson about human
sexuality and human dignity. These are lessons that they will take with
them into adulthood and ultimately society,” Ruse said.Mass Effect is made by BioWare Corp., in Alberta, Canada. The game has a strong, plot-driven storyline reminiscent of the Star Wars films or television shows like Babylon 5. As
part of that story, the playable character can become romantically
involved with a woman, if playing as the default male character; a man,
if playing as a woman; and an alien that looks and talks like a woman,
for any play-through. This storyline culminates in a cutscene in which
the characters copulate in full digital nudity. The game is
rated “M” for mature, as are many video games, and was banned in
Singapore last year, though the decision was later reversed. Mass
Effect has sold over 1.6 million copies since its release in November
2007. The game scored “Best RPG” in the 2007 Spike TV Video Game
Awards, and it has been nominated for Game of the Year
.

Critics blast

Bob Waliszewki, media specialist with Focus on the Family, told Cybercast News Service,
“We never shy away from sexuality in the media. It’s just a question of
how is that sexuality portrayed. One can use the media to portray some
very healthy forms of sexuality. And when done wisely with taste and
age-appropriateness, it can be done well.” “Unfortunately,” he
said, “Mass Effect doesn’t do that and even goes so far as to allow
homosexuality to be on par with heterosexuality and heterosexuality
outside of its proper context of marriage.” Ruse said, “I don’t
know if people are really aware about what’s in this game, but [the
people who made it] should lose a lot of money, and they should lose
consumer confidence, because this is a stupid move.” She noted
that “when you expose children, whose brains and personalities are
still developing, to degrading and harmful material, you’ve got to
believe that’s going to have an effect on the way that they view
themselves, others, and the world.”

“People try to raise a
straw-man argument and say that people from my perspective are saying
that everyone who views something is going to go out and become a
serial sex killer. Nobody’s saying that,” Ruse said. “But, it is
profoundly naive to suggest that feeding children graphic sexual
material is going to have no effect on their psyche. That’s just stupid
to think that,” she added. Waliszewki noted that numerous
reputable studies from firms like the RAND corporation have emerged
over the past four years that show causal links between exposure to
sexual images, profanity, smoking, and violence to a higher degree of
sexual activity, greater use of profanity, higher smoking rates, as
well as higher aggressive tendencies and violent action. “This
is about money,” Ruse said. “This isn’t about a First Amendment debate.
This is about [BioWare] making as much money as it can. It’s putting
elements in its games which they think will help them sell more games.
They don’t care about what they’re doing to kids.” She
concluded, “This is unethical, and they have a duty to be good
corporate citizens. There’s no First Amendment right to exploit
children … They’re making money at the expense of children in
America, and they ought to be vilified for that.”

The state of the industry

Calls made to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) for comment were not answered by press time. However, a report from the ESA says that the game player population is older and diverse than conventional wisdom would assume.
According
to the ESA, the average game player is 33 years old and has been
playing games for 12 years. Also, 38 percent of all game players are
women. Women over the age of 18 represent a significantly greater
portion of the game-playing population (31 percent) than boys age 17 or
younger (20 percent). The voice of the video game industry also
says that parents are strongly involved when their children buy or rent
games. Eighty-six percent of game players under the age of 18 reported
that they get their parents’ permission when renting or buying games,
and 91 percent say their parents are present when they buy games. Furthermore,
the ESA reports that the field of choices available to consumers is
very family-friendly. Eighty-five percent of all games sold in 2006
were rated “E” for Everyone, “T” for Teen, or “E10+” for Everyone 10+
by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). Cybercast News Service also sought comment from BioWare Corp but did not receive a reply.

Preventing exposure to children

“When
parental involvement is at a high level,” Waliszewki said, the warning
labels provided by the ESRB could deter children from being exposed to
inappropriate material. But he warned that “in many cases, where
parents are less involved and oblivious to the world of entertainment
these days, an ‘M’ rating is almost a badge of endorsement.” “Parents
really just need to be involved in [their children’s] entire
entertainment world,” he said. “There’s just too much gunk out there
for parents to be ‘hands-off.’ They have to be involved. They have to
know … what their kids are into in today’s entertainment.”
Ruse
noted that “most states have what’s called ‘Harmful to Minors’ laws on
the books that say that selling sexual material that a jury would deem
‘patently offensive to minors, which lacks literary, artistic,
political or scientific value.’ … might be prosecutable.” However,
she also noted that these laws are “very likely not enforced.” Rather
than new laws, “we need state and local prosecutors with spines and
backbones to prosecute some of these companies that are violating the
law” in order to prevent children from being exposed to indecent
material, she said.

  1. I must say that this is one of the most ignorant and misinformed articles that I have read in some time.
The bible has far more sex and violence than any video game. And the bible is not even age rated!!

Actually it’s correct. The bible is a real and truthful book so why would it not mention sex/violence since it obviously does happen. Unlike these v-games which you people worship it’s not a fantasy. The bible doesn’t go into gory details about the sex or violence it lightly mentions to give you an accurate picture. It’s not trying to arouse your 5 senses. Unlike these demonic games which you guys worship that are just as sexually/violently debase as porn, anime, hentai.

The Bible’s sex and violence has a point: it demonstrates how mankind needs God to save and redeem it through Jesus Christ. Videogame sex and violence has no point other than to be nihilistic and to glorify hedonism. The sex and violence in the Bible then is towards a positive end, while the sex and violence in non – Christian entertainment can only be destructive. Look, 50 years ago there were no video games, no R rated movies, no sex and violence drenched TV shows, and virtually no pornography. Check out the violent crime, sexually transmitted disease, and family breakdown rate then as compared to now. Compare the economy then to now. And if you care about such things, back then we had a generally functional public school system. Yes, there were problems back then, racism and sexism and all that, but is not Grand Theft Auto racist and sexist? We have so many problems in our society today, and everyone pretends that they either do not exist, that they just popped up out of thin air, or that they would magically disappear were we to raise taxes on the rich, enact universal healthcare, and make gay marriage legal. Well, if you have a better explanation for the skyrocketing of our violent crime rate and our other social problems in the last 50 years, let me know what it is. I will agree with you that video games and other forms of entertainment aren’t the only cause, but they are a cause.

This article depicts the ignorance of the far religious right.
The game’s “sexual” content makes up under 30 seconds of a game with 20 hours of gameplay. Also, not only is it optional but players must specifically tone their relationships with the characters over the course of the entire game, treating them with respect and interest, for the romance plot to conclude with sex, which would happen anywhere between the 12th-20th hour of play depending on how throughly the player chooses to play.
Also, there is literally no exposure of anyone’s sexual anatomy besides the butt/side of a breast of an ALIEN. There is NO exposure of any human in the game, only faces and silhouettes. Said alien is clearly not human in that it is completely blue. I’m somewhat certain that anyone with the capacity to play through the game has the ability to distinguish between sex in real life and in a game any how.

“homosexuality to be on par with heterosexuality”-False. The game allows you to sleep with someone of a unisexual species. Of course that requires said person to be capable of child bearing and rearing, making them appear female. But the terms homo and hetero sexual don’t apply outside of a species

You forgot one very important thing………..SAVE POINTS/BLOCKS.etc!!

After YEARS of seeing these heavenly biased articles I came to the conclusion that the problem is not the video games themselves but that the kids spend TOO MUCH TIME on them trying to complete it on one go and that is VERY UNHEALTHY AND DEMONIC!

If we could be super-human and play a modern action/adventure or any RPG game non-stop…………..that means no bathroom breaks! No eating/snack breaks,no sleep.etc we would log over 30 hours EASY and this doesn’t include side-quests! 😮

There is good news however and it comes in the form of save-points where if you played for a full hour non-stop you would have at least 2 oppportunities to save and take a break.

That’s right TWO opportunites. You know the numerical number two? 2?

You Christians are the lukewarm kind that the bible warns about in the end times. There will be more luke-warm kinds of christians in the end times then real-saviors and websites like this show it.

Love thy neihbors as thy self! :p

A good way to find luke-warm Christians is articles like this that try to judge people for sinning and making them feel bad instead of allowing Jesus to decide weather it’s all right or not and instead of being constructive and helping the *sinners* out of their pit.

I can’t decide if idiots like luke-warm Christians are worse or the Atheist are worse who want to shut down churches and ban prayers as long as it supports Jesus.

This world is so @#$!@$ extreme on both ends since the 90s!

What the @#$% happened here!? 😮

this is stupid, you just have to read the title,i mean,if you even have kids you already had sex,of course im not saying sex is good for kids, but if you speak about love, teaching children to grow up healthy and in a frienly place, you HAVE to let them know what sex is,how it works, what it is for, because not only its KNOLEDGE but also, its love.

  7. James said

Have you actually played the game? Do you have any idea what you are talking about?

  8. Lucas said

The persons mentioned in this article blasting an awe-inspiring story, has clearly never picked up a console controller (not that I blame them, Console Kiddies as we call them are annoying, especially when most are over 21 but act like 12 year olds!) or a PC’s mouse and keyboard and played through Mass Effect 1, 2 or 3.

“allows the characters to engage in explicitly graphic sexual intercourse.” Incorrect, what actually happens is a rather more clothed model of the player and romantic interest with lots and lots of kissing which then fades-to-black. It is no more explicitly graphic than Public Displays of Affection by elderly couples who give each other a good kiss on the lips. And it most definitely does NOT show sexual intercourse at all. For starters that would push the games rating up even above Mature, especially in countries such as the USA.

“Some game experts and pro-family analysts say Mass Effect is marketed to young kids” Again completely incorrect. It is marketed to older teenagers and people in their twenties, AKA 17+. It is however illegal to purchase the game below the games age rating.

“presents a moral danger to them and that the companies making and marketing the game should be prosecuted.” Prosecuted for telling a story? The moral danger is misconceived since the game is has no sexual intercourse at all nor is marketed to young kids. In fact the story actually shows a true moral hero. The Man who who warns his people and their neighbors of a great danger, is ignored by the vast majority of them including the rulers. He is then vilified and discriminated against. However he is proven right in the end and must unite all the people against the great danger, going through a lot of hoops and jumps to try and save LIFE. He has to make great personal sacrifices and very hard decisions.
One could say, in fact, that it teaches a great deal about morals.

“you’re teaching them a distorted lesson about human sexuality and human dignity. These are lessons that they will take with them into adulthood and ultimately society,” I fully disagree yet again. The aim of the story is not teach about human sexuality except that it is diverse and that Love can be one of the greatest strengths to anyone (which sounds remarkably similar to what a certain man said about 2000 years ago, give or take a few decades).

“This storyline culminates in a cutscene in which the characters copulate in full digital nudity.” This is purely incorrect. Please do more research before spreading such lies.

“Mass Effect doesn’t do that and even goes so far as to allow homosexuality to be on par with heterosexuality and heterosexuality outside of its proper context of marriage.” It is NOT for man to judge another man on what happens in his house. There is only one Judge. “Let he who is without Sin throw the first stone.”

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, do RESEARCH before making onerous statements and outright lies.

    In Peace,

This is all well and good, but these folks are overlooking one simple fact: 99.9% of the merchants out there will not sell M rated games to minors. In both of the local Gamestops in my hometown, when an adult buys a game for a child, the clerk/cashier, will make the adult aware of the rating and content of the game (this is GameStop’s corporate policy and failure to do this can result in termination). Wal-Mart will not even consider opening the case for a minor asking for an M rated game. The only way that kids can get M rated games are the independent sellers who don’t have corporate backing.

Of course, what [b]I[b/] would really like to know is this: When did it become the responsibility of the [b]INDUSTRY[b/] to police instead of the parent’s responsibility?

All video games pretty much since they’re inception have always been literally approved by Satan. It’s just more blatant now since society is becoming more accepting of evil which is seen through the majority of nay sayers on here concerning the article. It shouldn’t be a surprise when we see homosexuality / demons/violence in these games because many of these games are partially made by the same companies which gives us our movie/television/music entertainment. In these companies all of the higher ups worship Satan directly and many of these same people are homosexual. So they’re just putting their Satanic religious beliefs in games in order to pass it off as interactive entertainment and to slowly get children/adults into Satanism/witchcraft/masonry/any ungodly religion.
