Gay Disco Singer Sylvester Was Member Of Walter Hawkins’ Church?

It should be no secret that renowned disco superstar Sylvester James, known for recording some of disco’s biggest hits including “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” and “Dance Disco Heat”, willingly donated charities to the Love Center Church of Oakland, Ca.; pastored by gospel legend Walter Hawkins. Using only his first name as his official stage name, Sylvester stormed audiences and critics with his bold courage to dress as a drag queen and was one of the latter recording pop artists to confess to their homosexual lifestyle. Yet Hawkins and Love Center decided to love the faithful church member and even embraced one of his musical projects, “Call Me”, in 1984. Sylvester constantly confessed his love for “church music” – especially since his religious roots were in the Pentecostal/Holiness church (Palm Lane Church of God In Christ). He explicitly thanks God in almost every album’s liner notes, even quoting scripture (Psalms 117) on his last record. Sadly, Sylvester died at the age of forty-one of AIDS complications; while a memorial service took place at Love Center Church in memory of the music legend.

Interesting that Yvette Flunder, one of the leading voices among those that claim that the church should accept homosexuality, claiming that the doctrine is not based on the Bible but rather out of the desire of men to oppress women (?), was an associate pastor, administrator, and lead singer at Walter Hawkins’ church. She calls gay rights activists “prophets.” Instead of asking her “don’t you people know that you are sinning against God and will burn in the lake of fire for eternity?” GospelCity askedWhat difficulties do the members of the gay and lesbian community have being acknowledged by the faith community?”

One more thing: any more Madea/Tyler Perry fans out there? Even with the recent Tyler Perry phenomenon, the character of Ms. Mabel “Madea” Simmons, played by Perry himself, is under investigation under several critical sources. A man dressed as a woman…it’s something we see alot of in comedic environments. Rickey Smiley has done it. Flip Wilson has done it. Martin Lawrence did it. But gay circles claim the character of “Madea” was heavily ripped-off from Ms. Sophia McIntosh, a popular drag queen from Atlanta and that Perry drew strong inspiration from her many nights while performing regularly in gay clubs.

Oh yes, the article from the link above originally appeared in Prayze Hymn Online, a gospel music venture that obviously rejects the Biblical truth that homosexuality is a sin.

  1. 😯

And you know, even NWA thanks “God” in all their CD liner notes.

I think the Jewish man named Michael Medved said it best when he asked on his show (paraphrasing) “Why do Black men seem to continually feel the need to dress up like women?”.

  2. So I did more digging and IT IS TRUE! VERY TRUE! Sylvester was tight with the Hawkins.

First I found this Sylvester MySpace page one of his fans must have setup and Hawkins’ “official” MySpace page is listed as a “friend”.

Then I found this book about Sylvester, that details how he was very close to the Hawkins. Notice, he was even close with Daryl Coley and Coley sang backup!

Now if full out homosexual types were tight with the Religious Industry back then…

Why would you attempt to judge someone? Have you honestly took a long hard look at yourself? Now, we know that homosexual relationships are a sin. Also a relationship between a guy and a gal outside of marriage is a sin too. And in order for them to go to heaven they both must repent and be baptise in the name of Jesus Christ and be filled with the Holy Ghost. So it seems that society has become comfortable with a guy and girl having sex but want to stone or destroy the man on man and girl on girl. All of it is wrong sex out side of marriage is a sin!

I was a great fan of Sylvester in my younger years, and I vividly remember the last interview that he did with the Village Voice shortly before he died.
In it, he said that at 7 years old, his Grandmother took him to church to join the children’s choir. He then says that one of the church deacons took him to the back of the church (the Palm Lane Church of God in Christ), and sodomized him. His quote “In that moment, I knew I was a queen” still rings in my head.
There are those that will say that he was/people are born gay, but that quote furthered my rather unpopular contention that there is a (demonic)Spiritual root, and that just as in the natural, sexual intercourse is a covenant act, a binding act, the transferring act. Mr. James was introduced to, taken by that spirit that day, and the rest is, shall we say ‘history’…
His music, esecially some of the songs on later albums, speak of the longing for real love, friendship and care that he never truly recieved, no matter how he tried to get it. How else can one explain corrective rectal surgery at 10 years old?
As for the Hawkins family, this cannot be ‘news’. The crew that came out of LA in those days, was long on drama (and perms) , and full of queens…. Who can forget the rather infamous twisting of scripture by ‘Pastor Hawkins’ “Love covers a multitude of faults, ain’t that right?”

    It’s not just a “contention”, it’s a fact! 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 affirms it.

And I’m just wondering, why does it seem so much of this has links to COGIC? I mean it seems literally like the sexual abuse of children in COGIC is about as bad as with the Catholics!

What??? (never mind if homosexuality is a sin) Your theory doesn’t even begin to make sense. How many celibate, virgin people are flat-out homosexual in their orientation, desires, lusts….whatever you want to call it…and have never had sex, let alone homo-sex. What an ignorant thing to say. You have NO idea what you’re talking about. Dedicate your time and energy to something fruitful in the kingdom. Really, just shut up–you’re not helping anyone, just making suffering or confused people feel worse about themselves. There’s nothing “God” about that.

It is sad to think that he could be burning in hell right now and that deacon was his one way ticket there. What a shame. I believe if you talk to many homosexuals as to why they’re that way, some would tell you they were sodomized and some would tell you they were picked on as children.

I was being facetious, it is of course fact, despite the protestations to the contrary of our Emergent,Enlightened, All-accepting Clergy and denominations (can you say Apostate?) .. I had a recent seminary grad (now Ass’t Pastor) tell me recently that she came to understand in seminary that people are the way they are because God made them that way (homosexuals included) , and that the Holy Spirit is vast enough that one can be Muslim or Jewish (and I mean by faith, not culture) and still get to heaven.. ummm
    No.

  7. E.Bert Todd – Whatever seminary she attended should be avoided by all saints. And her assuming church leadership shows a conflict with 1 Timothy 3, but once someone goes making their own god, that lets them decide who makes it into their false god’s faux kingdom. They are long beyond respecting scripture.

Please tell anyone you know considering seminary to avoid that place.

Some seminaries are teaching most anything, to ensure they get more tuition dollars rolling in!

  9. I know this is old but I just came accross this today. I am just so upset that I did not discern this before. I grew up on Walter’s music and I avidly listen to Daryl Coley’s music as well. I found their music to be scripturally sound and uplifting. I know that I should have known something was awry when Daryl showed up on the Bobby Jones “Gospel show” too many times. I will no longer be supporting their music.

That info on Sylvester brought tears to my eyes! That was an evil plot hatched by the devil to corrupt him and countless others. We will never know how many that deacon defiled!

Thank you for exposing truth to us all and for urging us all to investigate and study the Word for ourselves!

Why doesn’t every sin written in the bible that is committed by us humans get marched on toward the churches for preaching against it. Adultery, murder, lying, stealing, bearing false witness, disobeying parents, taking God’s name in vain, and so on.

“Who does the church people think they are for preaching what the bible says.” “I was born that way!!!” Well, so was all of us. We are all born in sin and shaped in iniquity. But we are all born with CHOICE!!! a CHOICE to give in to what we feel that our bodies are lusting for or fall on our knees to God for strength to resist the temptation.

We all have a story of why we sin–molestation; the devil made me do it; I was weak; I couldn’t tell my wife I like men; visa versa; my mother beat me too much; my father was too good to us;the list goes on.

It is not the negative that happens to us, it is our reaction to the negative.

It is sad some of the things that happen to us in life; especially when we are children. But God does not lie. There is a way to escape temptation. Have I ever sinned? Dah!! But I still have to take responsibility for my actions. God does not leave us without knowledge and the will of choice some where in our life, the truth hits our souls.

If we really look back, humble ourselves before God, take our sins and lay them at Jesus feet, admitting that we are wretched, and that we are nothing without Him, He promised to deliver us (I John 1:9). Does this mean we will never fail again- No. But we take one day at a time. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof (Matt.6:34). Is it going to be hard, a struggle, Yes. Jesus learned obedience through suffering (Hebrews 5:8). We over come by trusting Him–leaning on Him.

We are not to take things into our own hands and give up, or give in. Let us not sear our conscience with a hot iron–walking in our own self-rightousness.

Give it all to God. Perverted sexual acts have a mighty strong pull, but the Holy Ghost is more powerful and God is merciful and forgiving. But let’s call a *spade a spade. Men with men, women with women, sexually–the bible says it is *SIN!!!

Yes Charlotte! Hopefully in their love for him (Sylvester) they encouraged him to seek God for change because of what the Bible states. Yes, God loves us, but He is also a God of justice. He gave His own self through His son Jesus, as a sacrifice for our freedom from sin & its destructive results, which was orchestrated by the first sinner Lucifer (or Satan) before he fell from heaven because of disobedience. Once we receive Jesus as a Saviour, we are not to live our lives as if we are on Satan’s side!

    Note the following scriptures:

Matthew 7:21-21: “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
(Note – The words – he that DOETH God’s will enters into God’s presence in the end. If one is a Christian, they need to actively seek God, read God’s word and the power of the Holy Spirit in order to grow and to endure temptations of this world. Falling here and then as one is growing is one thing, but one cannot actively live in the sins the Bible speaks of (your lifestyle) & then call them ok, not seeking any aid in overcoming them.)

Romans 1:22-27 “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. “

Galations 5:16-17 ”This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”

One of the things that has always concerned me regarding Christians is the fact that we tend to lash out the loudest and strongest against things we fear, loath and do not understand.
All Christians are born into a world sin and lust. The wages of sin are death and the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus. When I look out at the sea of what is supposed to be Christians living a life for Christ I am very troubled. When I turn my TV to what what are supposed to be Christian stations and see the way these followers are dressed and behaving, it troubles me. Sin is rampant amongst heterosexual men and women. Divorce is at an all time high. Greed(covetousness), boisterousness and lasciviousness have all but engulfed the church yet teaching people how to be Christians has gotten lost due to the fears regarding teaching them to hate others because of how they act. Christ taught us to love one another regardless of our faults. We can no more turn these people away from the savior than we can the drunk, adulterous husband or wife, wife beater, thief, murderer, liar, or the notorious false prophet. Homosexuals have just as much chance of being saved as anyone else. Christ did not come to condemn, he came to heal, forgive and save.

  14. GCurry said

Most of the comments here sound like a bunch of self righteous hypocrites. There is much more sin to deal with than always harping on homosexuality and how God tends to punish them. Homosexuals don’t have numerous children out of wedlock and run away from their responsibilities. People are sitting in the pulpits Sunday after Sunday screaming Amen to the pastor preaching about the sin of being gay. These same perishners are leading all kinds of adulterous lifestyles. There is greed, vanity and gluttony amongst many who proclaim to be saved, sanctified and filled with the holy spirit including the very ministers who claim to “lead the flock”. They themselves don’t realise that it is not the spirit of God who lives within them but the spirit of the anti Christ. He will fool many for he is the father of all lies and deception and teaches men against their brothers and sisters. Adultery, idolatry, boisterousness and unrighteousness are at an all time high amongst heterosexuals. Homosexuals are far less likely to kill, maim, and yes even molest than heterosexuals. They are more likely to hold jobs and contribute greatly to the nations economy. While I don’t claim to demean or take away anything from the holy scriptures I think it’s important to maintain that Christ came to heal, save and forgive all men who seek redemption. If he can forgive all the sins I just mentioned that occur amongst heterosexuals than he can forgive those who are homosexual too. It is with thought that man slipeth into sin first.

  15. Minister Boyd said

You are right GCurry. God can forgive anyone of anything, and there are hypocrites in the church, including leaders. False leaders in the Church will be in more trouble before God than anyone according to the scriptures. It is of note that when one receives Jesus as Saviour & becomes a Christian, only their spirit is changed. Our souls (mind, will & emotions) & bodies are the same & we can do whatever our flesh tells us. That is why we need to hear & read the word of God & seek the infilling of the Holy Spirit for power to truly live the Christian life of the Bible. I am praying that you are living in true happiness & right standing before God. God bless……..

Dear Minister Boyd: Thank you for your response. Christ taught: “I am not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance” Mathew 9:13. It is not a sin for 2 people to love each other. After all Christ loved all of his disciples and they loved him. Christ along with these 12 were male. It’s the lust that causes men and women to fall weak and commit unrighteous fornications and perversions. I am not above sin but I try to live each and every day of my life so that God can use me. There is always more I can do and I like to ask Christ what have I “not” done today that I should or could have done? Did I help someone in a word or a song? Did I discourage someone from doing wrong? Did I turn my back to the blind man, beggar, cripple,or thief. Did I feed the hungry or Did I visit the sick, elderly, prison bound, lonely or shut in? Each time I ask myself these questions I realise there is more to being a Christian than knowing the word of God. After all Satan knows the scriptures better than the most informed minister. Christ said “let your light so shine before men that they may know the works you do and glorify your father which is in heaven. Math 15:16 We are not put here for “form or fashion”. If I can help somebody then my living will not be in vain. May God bless the path you walk upon…..

    GCurry,

You said, “Homosexuals are far less likely to kill, maim, and yes even molest than heterosexuals. They are more likely to hold jobs and contribute greatly to the nations economy.”

Well – that’s quite a statement ! Can you back up your claims with some documentation for what you say ? Maybe a link to the words of someone who is QUALIFIED to make such a profession of fact ?

You also said, “It is not a sin for 2 people to love each other. After all Christ loved all of his disciples and they loved him. Christ along with these 12 were male.”

Whoa ! There is a BIG difference between two people loving each other (as in fellowship)…

And two people having a sexual relationship with each other !

Yes – Christ absolutely loved all of His disciples; indeed He loved everyone… and His disciples loved Him as well – without a doubt.

But Christ DEFINITELY never had sexual relations with any of them !! Nor did His apostles engage in homosexuality with each other or anyone else.

So please don’t try to insinuate that just because Christ and His apostles were all men that they must have also engaged in gay sex practices; or that there is some justification there in homosexuality…

    Because there isn’t.

The Bible states that if you continue in your sin, therby REFUSING to repent… you should be excommunicated from the Church. To repent means to TURN AWAY from that sin, not to continue having sex with your boyfriend and say you’re sorry for it the whole time !

  18. GCurry said

First of all I’d like to know why you call yourself the prodigal son? Perhaps at some point in your life you lived like the parable that Christ spoke of in Luke 15:11-32? Secondly I never said I had a boyfriend nor did I mean to insinuate that God does not condemn homosexuality. I don’t however believe however God has any less mercy on homosexuals than he has on any other sinful lifestyle nor do I believe he loves them any less.

Would getting the proof that should seem obvious to most people regarding my comments on homosexuals being less violent, less likely to end up in prison or fathering illegitimate children, or taking care of their wives or elderly parents make you hate them any less, no. You’d just find some other reason to judge people you have no cause to condemn. Christ said “love ye one another as I have loved you”. He did not exclude the homosexual.

Let’s be very clear on something my fiend, I never once meant to insinuated in any way shape or form that Christ had any type of relations with his disciples nor his disciples with each other. This is the paranoia that lives within the hearts of men who have committed sins of the flesh and understandably so.

If you truly believed what you stated about being excommunicated from the church because of sin then I can assure you my friend that you are a liar and a hypocrite and the truth is not in you. We don’t just lust with our bodies, we also lust in our hearts and in our thoughts. Christ came to heal and forgive and not to condemn. He wants us to be free of sin but he knows your heart and so a man thinketh, that he is. “The wages of sin are death”and the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ” Romans 6:23. Also sin does not just consist of sex and sexual desire. It also consists of immoral acts of character, lying, stealing, cheating, coveting, envy, boisterousness, gluttony, idolatry, waywardness, vanity, bigotry and hatred, racism, murder, and baring false witness to name a few.

If I needed to ask forgiveness for anything sinful I’ve done in my life to man I’d be a lost soul. I know a man that tells me forgiveness is not an option and that I should not forgive 7 times 7 but 7 times 77 and he would forgive me the same. Christ said “blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God” Mathew 5:8 Many will say their hearts are pure but God can see everything that goes on in the hearts of men. To thine own self be true and be blessed……………

  19. The Prodigal Son said

    GCurry,

Hello… and for the record – I am trying to be friendly. I think people take me wrong sometimes.

I felt ‘Prodigal Son’ suited me because I had been baptized as a boy… but the atheist school curriculum of my youth, along with t.v and movies (created by LITERAL anti-Christs) made me turn from God.

I thought I was ‘wise’; that I had cleverly ‘discovered’ that the Bible could not be true, and that anyone who professed belief in Jesus Christ was either stupid or just trying to get people’s money. See – I thought I had it all figured out.

But the older I got… something in the back of my mind was telling me that something was seriously wrong with this world, and my perceptions of it.

After 9/11 and all of the baldfaced lies told to us by the mainstream media, I basically became a hermit… and I began for the first time in my life to earnestly contend for the TRUTH.

Believe it or not – it was learning about Israel’s perpetration of 9/11, and subsequently the doctrines of men contained in the Talmud – which led me to a renewed interest in the veracity of the claims of the New Testament.

Reading the Pharisaic Talmud, I reasoned that if there had been no such person as Jesus – then He would not be mentioned in the Talmud at all ! After all… the Pharisaic ‘Jews’ of today relentlessly rail against belief in Him; insinuating that He is but another fairy-tale to be discarded like ‘Santa Claus’ and the ‘Easter bunny’.

It became like they were trying to cover Jesus Christ over with lies… but the pile of lies was so HUGE that it was blatantly evident; overtly obvious that there must be something under there !

After all – why would they go to such GREAT effort to cover up something or Someone who had never existed or that could be disproved ? It didn’t make any sense… so I spent another few years trying to dig my way to the bottom of that stinking pile, and I guess – truthfully – I’m still shovel in hand.

So I received the love of the truth, and I could no longer deny Him… the blessed truth of His existence or my own need to return to that faith in Jesus as Lord which I had been baptized into as a child.

So here we are… now I spend considerable time trying to help people to learn what I have learned, and in spreading the truth that Jesus is the Christ. I endeavor to tell the truth in love (holding peoples ‘feelings’ as secondary in importance), because the truth IS love !

    — — —

I don’t hate anyone. Period. And yes, I would still like to see some proof for your assertion that gays are generally less of a ‘threat’ to society than their hetero counterparts.

To help a homosexual TURN from their sin would DEMONSTRATE a real, genuine love for that person’s very eternal soul ! If saving someone’s life in the flesh shows love, then how much more to bring about the salvation of someone’s soul ?

I’m glad you weren’t trying to insinuate that Christ & His apostles were gay… but I’m hardly paranoid ! You were trying to insinuate SOMETHING when you said that – so if that wasn’t it – what was it then ?

I also stand firm; fearless by my statement about excommunication, and if I were become a sodomite, I would expect to be given the boot… if you’re gonna talk the talk – you are also required to WALK THE WALK !

The rest of your post appears to be a collection of random sayings… which seem to warrant no response at all.

    Hello again,

Thanks once again for the communication. I am not judging you as a person and I did not think you were being mean at all. You have a right to your views and the way you feel. There is a difference between being mean and being “direct”. You stated that you turned away from God as a child. Maybe you never knew God to begin with. If the world as you noted w/ TV and movies controls our thoughts and deeds there is little room to know God. I’m reminded of ephesians 2:89 in responding to you. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” As I stated earlier God knows the hearts of men. We can lie to each other and boast of our good deeds and the fact that we are saved but Christ said “let that light so shine before men that they will know the works we do and glorify the father who is in heaven”. Mathew 15:16 Before you call these rantings my friend I will explain why they are important to me as a believer:

We started this conversation regarding the subject of homosexuality and you have somehow made it look as though I insinuated there was homosexual behavior amongst the Savior and his disciples I was simply stating was we should not condemn anyone lest they come to Christ like you and I had to do once upon a time.

If you want proof of crime rate statistics between homosexuals and heterosexuals all you have to do is google it. You seem like a well versed and intelligent gentleman when it comes to research according to your letter. Keep in mind that homosexuals only make up approximately 10% of the population which makes them a minority compared to heterosexuals. Also I did not in any way shape or form state that homosexuals don’t commit crime. What I am stating is compared to heterosexuals it is far less. Now if you want to talk about depression, suicide rates, and relationship status between the 2 that might be a debate. This is a lifestyle I would not wish upon my worst enemy but I know God unlike man does not discriminate when it comes to his love and willingness to save.

Back to excommunication: I really feel man’s church has become a haven of hypocrites because I don’t feel God condemns homosexuality or “sodomy” as you put it no more so than he condemns pedophilia, premarital or extramarital sex, bondage, bestiality, drunkenness, drug addiction or any of the other promiscuous lifestyles that permeate the lives of person who make up many church bodies. Christ told Peter upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it”. Mathew 16:18 What he referred to was the love that Peter showed to him. The true church which is the “body of believers” is not a building. Its the love that man has for his fellow man and through that love and that love alone can we hope to one day see God. I have nothing but love for you my brother….

I just happened to come across this site as I am listening to house and disco music and thought of the Fabulous Sylvester James! I wanted to find more info on him in case a DJ decided to mix his music. Then I come across this worthless chatter about homosexuality as sin. You need to take a hard look at yourself if you believe that you have the right to judge and/or to be concerned with what someone else does in their bedrooms and their private lives overall. How soon Christians forget their own history in that they were once persecuted by the Romans for being “evil” and religiously unsanitary. Instead of truly spreading love of all people, unfortunately too many Christians (not all of course).. but too many only spread hate and intolerance. Get over yourselves and get a freakin life. Who cares about your opinion on homosexuality. Gays and lesbians are not going anywhere. Either get over it or keep your opinions and judgments to yourself.
