Attempt To Scrub Messianic Judaism From Wikipedia? If So By Who?

Posted by Job on September 6, 2007

Fascinating comment that I received (as I JUST HAPPEN to be watching Rabbi Moshe Laurie on TCT.TV right now):

there is an attempt to erase all messianic articles from wikipedia with the argument that they are not notable enough outside their circles.

i beg everyone to come and save those articles by adding outside links to them and voting to keep it

    thanks

  1. Evil Effort to Scrub Messianic Judaism From Wikipedia.

Primitive Jesus Christology (blog formerly named “Heal The Land With Spiritual Warfare”) has details. Messianic Jews are Jews who have accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as savior. They are persecuted for this, even in Israel.

    Romans 1:16 …

  2. I just got a wikipedia.org account, but I don’t know how to add a response to the discussions there about suggested deletions. Are only certain wikipedia users allowed to participate in talk there about proposed deletions?

How do we vote to keep them?

  3. Independent: Actually, I have no idea … I do not have a Wikipedia.org account (I just got my Google video account yesterday, give me a break :-)!). Do they have a support or anything like that for you to email?

  4. OK, by using the page edit feature a comment can be added. A bit cryptic of an editor, but I’m adding comments to the deletion discussion to keep these pages. I’m surprised there are not more adding comments to stop this.

  5. Oh it looks like some discussions have lots of comments to keep a page and others don’t.

  6. IndependentConservative: Great, thanks! Well, I would imagine that not that many people are aware of it. Even the campaign to delete it is clearly being orchestrated by the same few disgruntled rabbinic Jews, with Yeshivist obviously the ringleader. They use the same arguments to lobby for deletion, and as an alternate tactic they are urging them to merge them with other topics that they are also trying to get them to delete. But these “they aren’t significant enough” claims are laughable, when there are paragraph or less blurbs on people who spent a couple of seasons doing voiceovers for a single cartoon on cable, and people who don’t even return results if you do an internet search on their name. We might, however, want to contact these individuals and organizations and let them know that there are campaigns to get them taken off Wikipedia.

  7. Yes the groups need to be contacted and MORE PEOPLE need to post to “Keep” them on Wiki. Even with the discussions that have lots of “Keep” entries there are an equal number to “Remove”.

  8. They should establish themselves as a branch of Christianity in Wiki. Seems it would be harder to remove their pages then. Currently their pages are not part of any major religious branch in Wiki.

  9. Independent: Yeah, that is probably the right thing to do. I do not think that they want to be viewed as another Christian denomination, and of course their rabbinic enemies would love for them to do so because it would further their claim that these fellows are not legitimate Jews. Rick Ross of Cultnews.com, who is Jewish (and who I will no longer use as a source on this weblog), classifies Messianic Judaism as a cult and states that they should renounce any claim to Judaism, and even that they should start worshiping and living like Gentiles (of course, then you have a bunch of Gentile Christians that believe the same). So I can see where they might feel caught between a rock and a hard place: rejected by Jews and not fully accepted by a large number of Christians, with both groups wanting them to just become WASPs already because it suits their own agendas and desires; who cares about the needs, feelings, and really historically and theologically valid claims of the Messianic Jews. But I guess at some point you have to take a stand, and when you do you have no choice but stand with the brethren.

Submited post on PressPosts.com – “Attempt To Scrub Messianic Judaism From Wikipedia? If So By Who?”

  11. Well, they’re Christians, just like Barnabas and Saul were noted to be in Acts 11:25-26.

We (Christians) respect their claim to their heritage as with Paul in 2 Corinthians 11:22. Hey, we know that even WE are of Abraham’s seed in a spiritual sense.

I didn’t know Rick Ross was disrespectful to Messianic Jews. I will discontinue using his resources as well.

So I put up some comments in support of the pages and someone has tagged my newly created account as being an impostor (a so-called “sock puppet”). I’ve already sent a note asking how I can clear that up, since I have no other accounts with them.

Man the site is a haven for the Liberals. That’s why all this mess goes on there. It’s useful for some things, but a Liberal haven none the less.

You know, I didn’t mention it on my blog, but once I passed by a Catholic message board where a Jew was pleading with the Catholics there that Messianic Judaism is a cult, and everyone there was in agreement and against Messianic Jews.

When John Hagee is passing out food and forsaking the gospel in Israel, do you know if he feeds any hungry Messianic Jews 😀 😆 ?

  12. IndependentConservative: Yep, it certainly is. But you do have some Christians that are on there fighting the good fight. Every now and then I see hateful comments and lies that pop up on the sites dedicated to Christians and Christianity, but I check back and they are gone in a few weeks/months. And no, Hagee does not discuss Messianic Jews in his dealings with Israel because he knows that if he does, that would end his very lucrative and politically powerful political connections with rabbinic Jewish leaders in America and Israel. If the world “Messianic Jew” comes out of his mouth, AIPAC and similar would drop him like a bad disease, and he knows it. Incidentally, next week I am going to put up something on 2 Thessalonians 2:3 that will question whether the dispensationalism that Hagee, LaHaye (who had TD Jakes in his “Left Behind” movie), and TBN preaches is INHERENTLY dual covenant theology. I should have done it yesterday, but I allowed myself to get distracted by this Juanita Bynum nonsense.

  13. Independent: I went ahead and created my own Wikipedia account as well.

  14. I attended a “Messianic Jewish” synagogue for a couple of years, and frequently visit others in the area because of their emphasis on fellowship (doesn’t matter whether your background is Jew or Gentile). They spend pretty much all day Saturday together and comunicate throughout the week. btw, I am not Jewish.

I can tell you of a very interesting phenomenon I’ve seen in that time: I know a lot of Jewish non-believers. Orthodox, Reform, athiests, etc. There is, to my knowledge, only one group of people that absolutely inflames religious Jews (to what sounds just very much like JEALOUSY!), and that group is Messianic Jews (followers of Yeshua).

Religious Jews can ignore or speak dispassionately about Christians in general – we stay on our side of the fence and they could care less about us.
But Jews who follow Jesus or (former) Gentiles who attend Messianic Jewish synagogues with Jews who believe in Jesus? This makes religious Jews just crazy. Their reaction is WAY overboard, too.
That’s kinda telling, don’t you think?

That alone told me alot about these passages –
Romans 10:19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.
Romans 11:11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.

I do not agree that “Torah observance” as some synagogues call it is what we are called to do, but…something happens between believers who DO these things and religious Jews. JEALOUSY.
They don’t care about western bacon-munching gentile Christians.
They sit up and pay attention when Jews (or ‘gentiles’) believe on Yeshua AND observe feasts, etc.
It’s just struck me as so amazing that it is FINALLY happening – a bit of the jealousy spoken of in scripture is finally happening. :O) The Sabbath (specifically on Saturday), the blessings, the Davidic dancing, the feast days, oneg (fellowship/eating time after the service)….anyone doing those things will bring down the wrath of religious Jews (non-believers in Jesus, that is) on their heads.
I spose you’ve all seen what is happening in Arad – the persecution of Jewish believers there by the Haredi. That doesn’t happen much if the believer is patently ‘gentile’.

Wikipedia is a mess. They are often biased against Christian entries.

  16. Anonymous: Well, Wikipedia is part of the world, and the world hates and has rejected that which is in Christ. We have to go into this situation with our eyes open, know what to expect, and contend for the faith, and count it all to joy! While I understand self – segregating efforts such as GodTube.com, created because of how Christians get mistreated on YouTube.com, we have to be out there in the world where the sinners are if we are going to convince and gain some.
