The Tragedy Of Heath Ledger: Without Jesus Christ One Has Nothing

You can have it all by the standards of this world, but without Jesus, you
have NOTHING! The world is mourning today the loss of a great actor, Heath
Ledger. At just 28 years old and with an already impressive list of acting
credits on his resume including an Oscar nomination, Ledger was a major star
in the movie industry. Like many of the stars in the entertainment
industry, he was also very troubled. His battle with heroin led to the
break-up last September with actress-girlfriend Michelle Williams who is the
mother of their 2-year-old daughter. Reports are that he battled with
depression and insomnia. It really makes you at least wonder how much
affect playing some of the dark roles he did, the gay cowboy in “Brokeback
Mountain,” a heroin addict in the movie, “Candy,” and his latest role as the
dark and macabre Joker in the newest “Batman” movie to be released this
summer, had on his real life.

Sadly, there is no hint of any faith in Ledger’s life. He recently spoke of
death in an interview, dealing with the subject from the typical perspective
of someone who sees death as simply the end of life. Like so many in the
entertainment field, their faith is in themselves and in this fleeting life
that ends sooner than anyone expects it to. The cold hard reality of this
life is that it will end one day for each of us. Usually before we are
ready for it to end. At that moment, in that instant, we will immediately
be standing before God our Creator. God is not going to be interested that
we were a successful Hollywood actor or whatever our profession may have
been. The only thing God will be interested in is do we have a personal
relationship with Jesus by faith, nothing else.

Please take a moment today and pray for Heath Ledger’s family, friends, and
many fans. I pray that his untimely death will be a reminder to all of how
brief this life really is. I pray that those who mourn his loss will find
the comfort and strength of Christ and that they will turn their lives to
Him. If you have not accepted Christ into your heart and life yet, the

Knowing that there is the better percentage of two full generations living
today that don’t go to church, were not raised in a Christian home, and have
no spiritual foundation to their lives, I am motivated daily to bring these
people the Truth of God’s Word and the hope and love of Christ before they
fall into the hands of the many cults and false religions that exist today.
Let me help you understand something. When man sinned and his relationship
with God was broken, there became a void in man that only God can fill. Deep
down, sinful man knows something is missing in his life, something that the
things of this world can’t fill, and he begins a search to fill that void.

Everyone who lives has to deal with the trials, the pain, the challenges of
living in this sinful and fallen world. Those who have no spiritual
foundation to their life will spend their teen and young adult years trying
to fill that spiritual void with the things this world promotes such as
alcohol, drugs, relationships, sex, money, career, material possessions, and
all the other temporal things of this life. It is usually when a person hits
their 30s that they realize that the things this world offers simply do not
fill that void they have in their life. That is why during their 30s and 40s
so many people begin to explore the spiritual side of their life.

Those of us who know Jesus Christ as our Savior, who know the Truth of God’s
Word, have the ONLY answer these people are looking for. That void in their
life is there due to their broken relationship with God their Creator and
can only be filled by being reconnected to God their Creator thru faith in
His Son Jesus Christ. What upsets me more than anything else is to watch the
cults and false religions of the world boldly and aggressively market
themselves to the lost and hurting in this world as the answer they are
looking for. They don’t do this by creating their own subculture and hoping
people will come to them, they actively go out and pursue people, using the
resources of this world to reach them with their lies and false hope.

Let me be blunt. While we have become content with building beautiful
buildings with all the modern conveniences and technologies of the world for
our people to enjoy, while we have set up our own TV, radio, music, and
publishing empires to preach to ourselves, the cults of the world like the
Mormons, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Kaballah, Scientology, Moon’s Unification
Church, the false religions of the world like Islam, Buddhism, B’hai, Hindu,
and the many New Age philosophies, are reaching out to the lost and hurting
in this world through secular TV, radio, music, advertising, and publishing
vehicles that reach the world’s masses each day.

We have forgotten that Jesus told us to, “Go out into the highways and
hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.” (Luke
14:23 KJV) At some point it became too much work to go out and reach people
and much more financially profitable to simply preach to the choir. So we
abandoned the world, retreated to the subculture we created for ourselves to
enjoy, and in the process have left the souls of men to the scavengers of
satan who are having a field day leading the lost into eternal damnation,
while we sit in our $20 million buildings singing about going to Heaven.

SHAME ON US, AND GOD WILL JUDGE US!

One of the fastest growing cults today is Scientology. As I have shared with
you in the past, cults and false religions are nothing new to the time we
are living in. Man has been trying to find ways to fill that void created by
his broken relationship with God since the very beginning. You don’t go too
many chapters into the Book of Genesis until you come to the story of the
Tower of Babel. That story is literally about men who decided to create
their own religion. The cults and false religions of this world are all
traced back to the hearts and minds of men who lived in rebellion to God.

The Mormon cult came from the imagination of that pedophile murderer Joe
Smith, another pedophile murderer Mohamed dreamed up what we know of today
as Islam, Mary Baker Eddy created the Christian Science cult out of her
blackened heart, and Charles Taze Russell created the Jehovah’s Witness
cult. Every cult and false religion can be traced back to a man who lived
his life in rebellion to God and created the cult or false religion out of
his imagination. The Truth, the Christian faith actually started in the
Garden of Eden and comes directly from God Himself, the very God who created
the heavens and earth and made man in His own image.

I am always amused at people who reject the story of Christ and God’s simple
plan to redeem fallen man, yet buy into the wild theology of cults like
Mormonism and Scientology. Christianity requires that you use your God-given
intelligence to make the choice to accept Christ as your Savior based on
reality. Cults like Mormonism and Scientology require that you abandoned all
intelligence and blindly believe wild stories based on no facts. I have to
be honest with you, I will never have enough faith to believe the fantasies
of Mormonism or Scientology, but many who are hurting and lost and looking
to fill that spiritual void in their life, will.

I love you and care about you so much. I pray that you will not neglect the
commandment we have from our Lord to share the hope and love of Christ and
the Truth of His Word with those you meet along your journey. The Lord
didn’t sit in a church and wait for people to come to Him, HE WENT TO THEM!
Christ is our example and we need to not only follow His example but His
words to, “Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in,
that my house may be filled.” (Luke 14:23 KJV)

This is not complicated. We have the better percentage of two full
generations of people out there who have never been to church. They are
living their lives void of Christ and His Truth. We know they have a
spiritual void that at some point they will try to fill. That is why now
more than ever we need to be bold and aggressive in letting people know that
there is only ONE TRUTH in this world, there is only ONE ANSWER for their
problems, and there is only ONE WAY to fill that void in their life…FAITH
IN JESUS CHRIST!

God’s desire is that none be lost, that all come to repentance. May that
become our desire as well. Those who follow cults like Mormonism and
Scientology are on a conveyor belt to hell. Let us bring them the Truth of
God’s Word and the hope and love of Christ, so that they can get off before
it is too late and get on the conveyor belt to HEAVEN!!!

Is It OK For A Christian To Smoke Marijuana?

(Please note: this is a Bill Keller devotional. I do not have a television show. Or anything like that.) A question I get at least once a day and many times a week on my television
program is, “Is it OK to smoke marijuana?” The person asking the question
always throws in that marijuana comes from God and that makes it all right.
There are also many websites that give people what they think is Biblical
support that smoking marijuana is acceptable for a Christian. Before I deal
with this issue in more depth, let me answer the question first. NO! Letter
N. Letter O. NO!

Why no? Let’s start first with the fact it is ILLEGAL! You really don’t need
any other reason. However, putting that fact to the side, let’s deal with
the argument that it is OK to smoke pot since it is a creation of God. Yes,
God did create the plant marijuana comes from. However, God NEVER intended
you to dry the plant out, go to 7-11 and buy a pack of Zig Zags, crumble the
dried plant in the rolling paper, roll it up and smoke it. That my friend is
a perverted use of God’s creation.

In addition to the fact it is illegal and a perverted use of God’s creation,
smoking marijuana is extremely harmful to your health. It is actually worse
than smoking cigarettes and can kill you. Sucking that toxic smoke into your
lungs will not only ruin your health and take years from your life, but it
is polluting the temple of the Holy Spirit. The only difference between
smoking marijuana and putting a loaded revolver to your temple and pulling
the trigger is the gun will kill you instantly and smoking marijuana takes
some time.

Lastly, the only reason you smoke marijuana is to get that “high” feeling.
God wants us to have a SOUND mind, not an altered mind! When you are high,
you are not able to think clear and under the influence of marijuana will
make choices that you normally would never make otherwise. We have spoken in
the past how every day we make many choices. Our choices to follow and obey
God bring blessings. Our choices to rebel against God bring consequences.
When you are high you are much more likely to make choices in rebellion to
God and His Word and end up paying a huge price for those choices.

Listen my friend, satan is the great justifier. He will always help you to
rationalize and justify sinning against God, almost making it seem like the
right thing to do. There is absolutely NO Biblical support for smoking
marijuana. The same game people play in using the Bible to try and justify
the sin of homosexuality is played in using the Bible to try and justify
smoking pot. Taking verses out of context, stating a verse means one thing
when it clearly means another, making assumptions the Word does not support,
are all tricks the enemy will use to try and justify smoking marijuana.
Never forget, satan is a LIAR!

Let me add that I am well aware that marijuana is also used medicinally by
terminally ill people with cancer and other diseases. We are talking about a
fraction of 1% who are in this group and have been legally prescribed
medicinal marijuana by a doctor. What we are talking about today is the 99+%
who smoke marijuana illegally simply to get high. I am also well aware of
the efforts by some to legalize marijuana and the various arguments on both
sides. The biggest mind altering substance is already legal and that is
alcohol. We don’t need another mind altering substance legalized that will
create even more marijuana addicts. Marijuana already destroys so many lives
and legalizing it will only destroy more.

I love you and care about you so much. If you ever wanted a great example of
the power of our culture today, just the fact I am doing an entire
Devotional on this issue is proof of that. While for most reading these
words today, this topic is a no brainer, I can assure you there will be many
who think there is nothing wrong with smoking marijuana. They will tell you
it is no different than alcohol, though they forget one small detail.
Drinking alcohol, as bad as it is, is legal while smoking marijuana is
against the law. It is not only illegal but is ruins your health, alters
your mind, is a perverted use of God’s creation, and destroys lives.

For those of you in bondage to marijuana or who knows someone who is, I want
you to know that it is no accident you are reading these words today. God is
speaking to you about quitting. The first step to finding freedom from this
bondage you are in to marijuana is to want to quit. Once you come to that
place, God will help deliver you and set you free by His power. It is like
any other bondage, you need to find people to be accountable to, drop those
in your life who are still part of that world, and fully surrender to the
Lord and find His strength each day to walk in victory.

If you are in bondage to marijuana or know someone who is, I will be praying
today for the Lord to deliver you or the one you know from that bondage.
Smoking marijuana is just a momentary escape from life that doesn’t solve
your problems, only compounds them. Satan wants to keep you in bondage to
marijuana, God wants to set you free. I will be praying for you or the one
you know today to quit listening to the lies of satan whose goal is to
destroy you, and start listening to God who wants to bless you.

The greatest high of this life doesn’t come from smoking pot, the greatest
high in this life comes from the Spirit of the living God!

How Could He Do Such a Thing?

Perhaps you are wondering, How do men or women get entrapped by something as vile and self-centered as pornography and masturbation or by any kind of sexual immorality, for that matter? How can a husband say he loves his wife and then engage in such raunchy behavior? Women who are faced with questions like these often feel deeply betrayed. As the impact of their husband’s sin presses on them, they usually vacillate between anger, insecurity, and sorrow. Trust is shattered, and fear quickly slides into its place. Because involvement with pornography isn’t usually understood or expected, women often struggle to grapple with the realities of such an enslaving habit. With good reason, it is a sin that causes a wife to feel strangely violated. Something or someone else has used what she believed was exclusively hers alone.

To a woman who is reeling in the aftershock of discovering her husband’s vice, it seems senseless and incredibly stupid for him to risk losing everything that is dear in order to gratify sexual urges that are so base. Yet responding with disgust and bewilderment is the way most of us respond when we hear about someone who is enslaved to some devastating sin. We are surprised because we do not fully comprehend the power of sin or believe every person is vulnerable to being controlled by it.

Women who are discouraged as they try to understand their husband’s slippery slide into moral failure should consider the sins they might be enslaved to—perhaps to sins that don’t have the same consequences or stigma that enslavement to pornography does. Is gossip a problem? Worry? Anger? Is there complete self-control with the things one buys? Is credit- card debt a battle? How about time management, time in prayer, and Bible study? Do you have any difficulties there? No matter who we are or how well we have managed to keep ourselves from the clutches of sin, we all still need to be exhorted to “lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us” (Heb. 12:1, KJV). Sin is incredibly deceptive, powerful, and tailor-made to easily exploit every person’s weakest link. One person’s besetting sin may not be another’s.

It’s easy to see sexual sins as heinous when they don’t tempt us. But what about our own besetting sins? Have we made up our mind to flee from them only to be entrapped when our pet passions got the best of us once again? Have we asked for forgiveness again and again and still failed? If we are not careful, we can become just like the Pharisee who self-righteously told the Lord (who let us know the Pharisee prayed with himself), “God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess” (Luke 18:11-12). Whenever we, like the publican, derive our sense of being right with God from what we do or do not do, we become puffed up with pride, critical of others, unmerciful, and unforgiving. We can forget that God’s grace is no more grace if we deserve His forgiveness and righteousness. If we come to God in our own merit, we will find not approval but rejection.

It isn’t uncommon for a woman betrayed by her husband’s immorality to become so prideful and self-righteous that she prays, but God refuses to listen. The Scriptures teach us that “God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble” (1 Pet. 5:5). At the same time, her husband, who sinned so grievously against her, might humbly acknowledge his sin and turn in repentance to God. He may discover that the Lord is ready to grant him full forgiveness and restoration of fellowship. What a strange twist—the betrayed wife behaves like the Pharisee while her husband acts like the publican, who ”standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13). The sinning husband can be forgiven and restored even while his wife, who was sinned against, can be estranged from God. What a sobering reminder that none of us deserves God’s mercy or forgiveness. None of us can be forgiven because we deserve to be. Humility elicits God’s compassion and grace, but pride elicits His opposition completely. “I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted” (Luke 18:14). The truth is, all of us can be as enslaved to sin as the husband who is enslaved to pornography. And the path to victory for us is the same path of victory for him.

What We Need

In a nutshell, all sins that involve self-indulgence reflect the same spiritual lack of temperance or self-control. Scripture recognizes temperance as a byproduct or fruit of the Spirit, a characteristic of those who “walk in the Spirit.” One who exercises his own will and lives as he pleases is one who “walks after the flesh.” On the other hand, one who is able to restrain the sinful desires of his human nature and obediently chooses to do God’s will is one who “walks after the Spirit.” The Bible tells us in Galatians 5:16-17, “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust [sinful desires] of the flesh [human nature]. For the flesh lusteth [wars] against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.” If the ability to do right and to resist wrong depends on one thing—walking in the Spirit—then learning what “walking in the Spirit” is should be of utmost importance to every believer. Of all the Christian men (including many pastors) who have been enslaved by sexual sin and of all the Christian women who have been enslaved by bitterness and slander, none can honestly dispute the practical truth of this passage of Scripture. Those who daily walk in the Spirit find all the strength and grace they need to withstand temptation and to do what is right. Those who do not walk in the Spirit do not. The flesh can never be trusted. The Lord Jesus Christ can.

To “walk” refers to how we live and conduct our life. To “walk in the Spirit” is to depend upon and walk with the Lord in the same way God commanded Israel to walk with Him. “And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul” (Deut. 10:12). The blessings and benefits to those who choose to learn and do God’s commandments are spelled out throughout both the Old and New Testament. “Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein” (Hosea 14:9). David understood that the power and ability to walk with God begin first with a decision of the will but also depend on trusting in God’s enabling grace and strength to do so. God alone enables us to walk in His ways. “Teach me [dependence] thy way, O LORD; I will [the will exercised] walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name” (Ps. 86:11).

What both husband and wife need when faced with the aftermath of sexual sin is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, for He alone is the only means through which a husband will conquer his sexual sin or a wife will conquer the temptation to give up or become bitter. This is a time when both need to grasp the fact that one’s spouse never could and never will be able to provide the kind of emotional satisfaction and fulfillment that can come only from a wholehearted relationship with Christ. Even the best marriage relationship can be filled with disillusionment and disappointment if our first love is not our Savior with whom we are united forever.

What a miracle of God’s grace if your husband is experiencing true repentance and grappling with the realities of his sin. True repentance always brings true sorrow for sin. But whether your husband repents or not, you, the betrayed wife, desperately need to learn the practical lessons of walking with God, daily trusting Him, communing with Him, listening to Him, and depending on Him. He alone will never betray you, disappoint you, leave you, or cease loving you. At a time in your life when your hopes and dreams seem to be crumbling all around you, you have the privilege to flee to the Lord and to find in Him everything you need to face the challenges of each new day.

Many saints will testify that some of the sweetest times with the Lord are when we are experiencing the depths of anguish and despair. But God does not leave us in the valley of sorrows. He walks beside us in the valley and sustains us through the darkest night, and then He leads us ever upward to sunny pastures, where we will once again delight in all of God’s loving provision. David testified of this blessing when he said, “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD” (Ps. 27:13-14).

Look up, dear sister, and don’t look within. Don’t focus your thoughts on your husband—look up, for that is from where your help and deliverance will come! David learned this same lesson and confidently told us,

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore (Ps. 121:1-8).

You’ve made it through the initial discovery. You’ve made the decision to stay in your marriage and fight for it. You know life will never be the same again, but life does goes on. The routines of everyday living continue—work, school, grocery shopping, housework, cooking, answering the phone. You are going through the motions, and you are giving your best. But discouragement and sorrow might still be your constant companions. Perhaps you are looking back instead of looking forward, and you are still mourning over what you might still see as total loss.Remember, discouragement is always rooted in the way we think—the specific thoughts we center our attention on, the “what ifs” and “if onlys” that crowd out any hope or rays of light. Yes, you may know God’s promises, but they will bring no comfort if your heart refuses to be comforted. Your heart may continue to mourn as though sorrow will somehow soothe the deep wounds that are yet so tender and sore. Oh, dear sister, there is no comfort, no joy, no healing, and no hope in the deep abyss of morbid thoughts and fears.

Would you take a moment to read these gentle reminders that can lead you out of the valley and into the light of day? As we have often sung,

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

This truth doesn’t make sense to our human hearts, but the weapon that slays the enemy of discouragement is within our reach and within our power to pick up and use. We have the Holy Spirit Himself dwelling within us, and God wants us to be encouraged, comforted, and strengthened. The Bible assures us, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:3-5, KJV). Will you summon inner courage by praying right now and asking God to walk with us a moment and to strengthen you as we face some of those tormenting monsters together and conquer them with God’s sword?

Where in the World Did She Come from?

Many women have described their husband’s bondage to pornography as adultery with a woman they cannot speak to or confront; after all, she lives on the pages of a magazine or a website. She is a phantom who steals the attentions and affections of their husbands and entices them to follow her far away from real life at home in a real world. This perpetually naked woman, who is airbrushed to perfection, feels no concern for the home she destroys, for the hearts she breaks, or for the men she lures into her pernicious trap. She smiles provocatively and demands nothing—or so it seems to the men who are mesmerized by her. Little do they know that they are following this woman like a cow to the slaughterhouse (Prov. 7:22), where death and horror quietly await them.

This seemingly “harmless” fascination with a woman who never speaks or demands is, in reality, fascination with a woman who is leading a steady stream of men into a trap of the darkest and most sinister sort. While they are feasting on her delights, they are unaware that she is silently eroding their defenses and infiltrating every corner of their lives with only one intent—total destruction. A beautiful Trojan horse, she cares nothing for them and has no pity, though she destroys careers, marriages, homes, and—most precious of all—a man’s integrity, character, and relationship with God. Solomon warns about this woman. In Ecclesiastes 7:25, we read, “I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness: And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares [traps] and nets, and her hands as bands [prison]: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.”

Men who have been taken by the beauty of this licentious woman called “pornography” have far greater problems than a fascination with lewd photography. They have been hooked by the lure of illicit sexual arousal. Pornography has one goal—arousal and sexual release. Make no mistake about it—the pictures are the bait, not the hook. The hook that snares and entraps is the sexual high. It’s certainly enticing because it seems better than the euphoria of elicit drugs with none of the “side effects.” It’s perfectly legal, comes without exposure to sexually transmitted diseases, costs little, requires no self-sacrifice, and demands no emotional ties or investments of time. Apparently, no one is hurt, no one is physically violated, and no adultery is committed. The illusion is that this sexual high is the most perfect stress release and trouble-free recreation a man could engage in with so little cost and trouble. There’s only one problem—this sexual high completely ignores God.

Men entrapped by the ritualistic habits of masturbation (self-sex) live as though sexual gratification were a sport rather than a sacred gift from God reserved for the intimacies of marriage. Masturbation disregards the one-flesh relationship of marriage characterized by physical union and mutual enjoyment. It exchanges the long-lasting delights of true intimacy and love with one’s spouse for a self-centered shortcut to momentary gratification that incrementally destroys a man’s ability to enjoy sex with his wife and to interact with her. It utterly destroys the mysterious spiritual bond that is established between a man and a woman who have come together in sexual union, and it ultimately grieves the Holy Spirit and alienates a man from his God. In the end, masturbation reduces a sacred act to lurid debauchery and hardens a man’s heart until he no longer hears the cries of his own wife or children—let alone the still-small voice of the Holy Spirit. High on the throne of his heart is his own insatiable lust, which rules his life with an all-encompassing tyrannical control.

Lust does conquer and rule whoever lingers in its grasp. What may have begun with curiosity or an impulsive act during a time of stress quickly envelops and consumes a man until he no longer controls it—lust controls him. And sometimes lust goes beyond the pages of photographic images and morphs into a real woman who is willing to play the part and become a living fantasy. How in the world can this sin happen to a Christian man, and is there any hope for his rescue? Thankfully, God’s love, grace, and power can transform even men who have been corrupted by the utter blindness and deception of sexual vices. There is hope and more than that—hope for a better tomorrow.

“What?” Paul asks incredulously, “know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. Flee fornication [any sexual immorality]. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body” (1 Cor. 6:16-18). Adultery is much more than physical intercourse between two living, breathing people. To understand why adulterous behavior by a spouse wreaks such internal havoc, one must understand that it is more than a simple physical act. Adultery includes any act that robs a marriage of intimacy that rightfully belongs to one’s marriage partner alone. God designed marriage, which is the intertwining of two people’s lives both physically and emotionally, to produce an exclusive and delightful bond of companionship.

The sexual union is something God created for our enjoyment. Animals procreate to satisfy sexual urges, but people automatically engage their minds when they engage in sexual union. People are designed in such a way that they develop an emotional attachment to the object of their love and physical attachment. Emotional intimacy and physical intimacy cannot be separated—the two complement and feed each other. If someone sets his (or her) love on the delights of a harlot, he will become inextricably attached to the harlot. If one sets his love on the delights of his spouse, he will become attached to his spouse. If one sets his love on himself, he will become attached to his own self and be enveloped in self-gratification. When human beings violate the built-in plan God set in motion, they will always suffer excruciating consequences.

A satisfying marriage relationship in which both partners are emotionally attached to each other can be compared to a glass of water that is completely filled. There’s no room for more water from another source—the glass is full. But when one or both partners begin investing their emotional and physical efforts in a third object of sexual attraction, the full glass of water begins slowly draining into another glass. Eventually, the once-full glass becomes a partially full glass of water and ultimately nothing more than a dry glass with nothing in it. Men and women in such a marriage sense that something is wrong with their marriage relationship. It is no longer satisfying or warm. They often wrongly conclude that they no longer love their spouse, or they believe all hope for the marriage is gone. What they do not recognize is that they themselves have stopped refilling the glass. They have poured themselves into another glass until their marriage glass has become empty. When both partners begin pouring themselves into each other and begin investing their attention and nurture into their own relationship, the “outside glass” becomes empty, and the marriage is once again full and satisfied.

This finding: “Army recruits who were emotionally neglected as children and who had lived stress-filled lives were more likely to complete basic training” tells it all. Break up families with socially liberal attitudes and policies promoted not only through the government but also the educational system and news and entertainment media, where every anti – family abomination is normalized and glamorized while people who actually try to live a lifestyle that is conducive to producing healthy happy Christian children with clean minds are mocked (they are now even calling attempts to prevent your children from having premarital sex while living under your roof “child abuse” and what have you). And destabilize the economy with terrible fiscal policies, a failing education system, free trade agreements with third world countries, fighting nonsense wars (which also destabilizes families … I suppose you haven’t heard about how shipping the husband or wife off to Iraq for years at a time leads to divorces and such … Star Jones’ claim to fame was prosecuting this woman who left her husband for another man while he was off fighting the first Iraq War and having him killed for the insurance money when he returned), and allowing illegal (and legal) immigrants to flood our job market claiming that it is either work that Americans won’t do or are not trained to do (see the failing education system).

Of course, economic insecurity destabilizes also families … financial pressures are the leading cause of divorce. This is most true of the underclass, the same members of which oft joins the military because the factories have moved to third world countries, illegal immigrants are getting all of the construction/agriculture/light manufacturing/service jobs, and the money that they could use to train people to do high tech work is being spent on recruiting and sponsoring people on high tech visas. See how this goes in a circle? Almost makes you wonder if they designed this system on purpose. Destroy the middle class and people are going to be forced to join the army no matter what the military policy is. Oh yes, and opposition to capricious wars will always be blunted because the pro – war people will have the “it is an all – volunteer army … why are we even talking about casualties to begin with … didn’t these people KNOW that there was a possibility that they would have to fight a war when they joined?” The neo – cons just LOVE plying that line.

So, no wonder Colonel Richard Gonzalez, the person who did this study to begin with is now being attacked and discredited by the government for exposing how this same government has worked to create the very conditions that makes up our underclass (and therefore faceless and nameless) fighting force. After all, exploiting the poor is what evil people are all about, and you know people like this are not truly Christian, because the Bible speaks more against mistreating the poor than it does against sexual sin. So the next time you see all of these flag – waving neo – conservative Christians talking about how much they “support the troops”, this is another thing that should make you stop and think once or thrice about their sincerity. Then again, if these Christians are sitting around watching Fox News all day instead of reading their Bibles (see Why Fox News Is Bad For Christianity), maybe they are just deceived and in need of our prayers so that their eyes may be opened.

Is Bishop Thomas Weeks III A Wife Beater? We Know He’s A Heretic!

From the Atlanta Journal – Constitution (in my opinion the worst newspaper in the country, but hey it keeps winning Pulitzer Prizes) Husband attacks evangelist Bynum in parking lot. Please note that it says 1. Bynum and Weeks are SEPARATED (so why attend their marriage conferences since THEY ARE BOTH IN THEIR SECOND MARRIAGE ANYWAY!) and 2. Weeks beat Bynum so badly that she required a trip to the hospital and 3. Weeks fled the scene before the police could get him. Now can anyone deny that evil spirits are not involved here? All of you people who have been flooding this weblog with your defense of this couple, their members, and their friends in the religion industry (a great many of whom KNOW what this couple are really like), what do you have to say now?

Does this vindicate everything that I have been saying against Weeks III and Bynum? Actually, no it doesn’t. Why not? Because everyone sins. David committed adultery and then murdered “the other man.” Peter denied Jesus Christ three times, and then almost caused the church to split apart with his refusal to have table fellowship with Gentile Christians. Christians are going to sin (see my essay When Christians Sin)! How do I know this? BECAUSE THE BIBLE SAYS SO!

So the issue here is NOT the sin of Bishop Weeks III beating his wife. Rather, the real issue is the false doctrine of unitarianism (denial of Trinity) that Weeks and Bynum preaches, their false prosperity doctrine, and their getting rich off the gospel by exploiting and making merchandise of the poor. The worst part is that Weeks III (and his father Bishop Weeks II) and Bynum preach an abiblical doctrine of legalism and works that they themselves do not keep!

And some have asked, as did the sincere Pastor Anavah(http://www.victoriouslyfree.org/ plus her own weblog click here) in her comment whether I am against women preachers and enjoyable sex in marriage. Regarding the former, the Bible specifically forbids women having a position of authority over men in the church, and that is a consistent principle established in Old Testament Judaism and carrying over to the New Testament Body of Christ. If Pastor Anavah executes her ministry in a manner that respects the authority of God and the Bible (and not of any man) and is doctrinally sound and faithful to the Bible while doing so then who am I to condemn her calling and work? God forbid that I would do such a thing lest I be condemned myself on account of my false accusation, just as the friends of Job were! Yes, it is possible to minister while not having a position of authority over a man, and writing and distributing her book on spiritual warfare in fighting addiction (which can be ordered on her site) and maintaining a Christian website are excellent examples of how to do so. There are others, and I have tried to list them in my women preachers category, my favorite of which are women in India that converted to Christianity from Hinduism working as evangelists preaching the gospel in a society and culture that treats women quite shamefully and also persecutes Christians (see Women Preachers Working In The Asian Mission Field and Christian Persecution Alert: Female Indonesian Evangelists Released). And no, I am not against enjoyable sex in marriage. Quite the contrary, sexuality is a gift from God – and a spiritual one at that – that was given to be enjoyed by men and women within the confines of holy matrimony. But as false preachers tend to do, Weeks III and Bynum have taken a pure holy God – given gift and utterly defiled it with their false doctrines and own personal perversions, making it something base and wretched. Look at this clip where Weeks III asks this man to name the part of his wife’s anatomy that pleases him the most (a corrupt base view of sexuality; Jesus Christ called this pornea – the root word of pornography – and in Matthew 5:32 listed such evil as legitimate grounds for divorce), and when he gives a predictable response, Weeks III breaks out into uncontrollable laughter!

Strange laughter is a clear sign of demonic presence and activity, and though I am a charismatic with a Pentecostal background, we cannot ignore what many other Bible believing Christians have to say about some of our charismatic “laughing revivals!”

Make no mistake people, there is a statistically proven link between pornea (or pornography) and violence (including spousal and domestic abuse), there are demons involved in pornea and violence, and now you have Thomas Weeks III beating his estranged wife! So I ask you spiritual warfare deliverance minister Pastor Anavah, how on earth could you not know this? Your very position requires you to know it and to preach and teach against it, and not to defend the oneness heretics that exploit the poor trafficking their sexual drugs for financial gain! For I, Pastor Anavah, am not an ordained minister and nor do I hold any church position! This is something that you should be taking me aside and educating me on as did Priscilla to Apollos in Acts 18:24-26! So Pastor Anavah, rather than coming on here defending heresy, you need to be faithfully and zealously pursuing the call that God has put on your life! Monitor and multiply the talents that God has given you charge over lest He take them from you and give them to another, for the closing verse of the parable of the talents, Matthew 25:29, reads “For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.”

And this is not a personal attack on Pastor Anavah, who indeed seems to be someone sincerely seeking to serve to God. She represents all of you! God gave every member of the Body of Christ a work to do, a charge to keep, a ministry to fulfill, even if you are as I: not someone who holds a five fold ministry position or church office. You have read the warnings given to the churches in Revelation 2 and 3, and if you have not, please read them now! For it is not just about the false preachers. Judgment day is coming, and we will be held accountable: me and ALL OF YOU!

And this is to all of you people who keep claiming how we need unity in the Body of Christ. See this link and understand why I REFUSE TO UNITE WITH HERETICS! LIGHT HAS NO UNITY WITH DARKNESS!

I will point out, in the interests of fairness, that Bishop Weeks III has not had a chance to address these charges, let alone be convicted in a court of law of them, and some have alleged that there is something amiss about this whole affair. Well you can decide for yourself about the domestic violence accusations against the man, but in terms of his heresies and blasphemies, well his own words (and actions in other matters) condemn this oneness false preacher.

As I have said time and time again, there is a war going on. Now is the time for hand to hand spiritual combat, not lukewarm sitting on the sidelines. If you are not saved, follow The Three Step Salvation Plan and get saved. Video Game Addictions Destroying Marriages And Families

Do not worry, this is not some screed against video gaming in and of itself. (Do not deny, however, that the evil content of a great many of these games should not be opposed by Christians.) Instead, the issue here is the truth that there are a great many things out there that are working to destroy minds, bodies, lives, and families. Christians need to be out there on the front lines constantly opposing this work of the enemy with the gospel, with prayer and counseling, and with spiritual warfare. Yes, if you are ignoring your spouse and children to sit and play video games all day, then you have a demon in you, if not several. The same is true with anyone that is addicted to gambling, sports, sex, alcohol or drugs, talk radio, television, etc. This is not hard to understand. It is that Christians are unwilling to face the reality because they are either A) afraid of demons or B) afraid of being viewed as strange, fanatical, or uneducated for going around talking about evil spirits and such. So they either run away from the problem, or try to “fight it” with Freudianism. Well let me tell you this: if you are unwilling to offer a family the help that it really needs to keep it from being destroyed by Satan in this manner … to keep fathers from being torn from their children and wives from their spouses, and the result being the video game addict living alone and depressed (giving the addict all the more motivation to seek escape through games and its culture) knowing what the end of that person will be unless God intervenes and saves the addict, then whose side are you on? Certainly not God’s! Well I have to let you know this right now: if you are addicted to video games or to anything else, then your only hope is Jesus Christ. And if you are a Christian that is so filled with fear and false doctrines that you are unwilling or unable to admit and confront the demonic activity in addiction and other areas, well let me tell you something judgment day is coming for you too you alleged Christian, and Jesus Christ is YOUR only hope as well. To both you groups and all others, I offer you this opportunity and do not let it pass you buy: follow The Three Step Salvation Plan! And as for adults – especially men – that seek escapism through video and online gaming, even by way of those Madden NFL games that I hear are absolutely outstanding … well again I have no scriptural basis for declaring this to be sin. The most that I can do is argue that certain games should be avoided if the CONTENT glamorizes, glorifies, or desensitizes you to sin, and I addressed that in my Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil, Do No Evil, Fear No Evil series written for the old site. But apart from that, please recall: everything in moderation. Make sure that you are walking within the Will of God and honoring God in all things and at all times. Above all, remember 1 Corinthians 13:11! And this goes not only for video games, but movies, books, TV shows, magazines, the people that you socialize with, and yes ESPECIALLY the churches that you attend and preachers that you follow. Christianity is 100% serious, people. There is a war going on, and don’t you ever forget it!

They don’t wear black veils. You won’t find them shopping for caskets at the local funeral home. And they don’t expect you to send them somber flower arrangements or cards expressing your sympathy.

And yet, they’re widows nonetheless.

Though their spouses and partners haven’t gone to the great beyond, these particular widows and widowers say their loved ones have gone someplace that’s almost as distant and unreachable. Some have left this world for the “World of Warcraft,” others have forsaken this life for “Second Life” and still others have been taken away by “EverQuest,” “Final Fantasy XI” and “Dark Age of Camelot.” As the ranks of those playing video games in general — and massively multiplayer online games in particular — continue to grow, so grow the ranks of those who refer to themselves as “game widows.”

They are the husbands, wives, girlfriends and boyfriends of gamers whose playing habits have consumed their lives. The bereaved say their mates have suffered a kind of digital death that has left only the shell of the person they loved behind. And like a real death, it has left the people who remain heartbroken, scared and angry.

“I felt like I wasn’t even married anymore,” says Sherry Myrow, 29, of Toronto. Her husband had become obsessed with playing “WoW,” a hugely popular online role-playing game that now boasts some nine million subscribers world-wide. “He wasn’t eating or sleeping. He wasn’t cooking — and he loves cooking. He became this person who wasn’t interested in life if it didn’t have to do with ‘World of Warcraft’.”

Angry, frustrated and feeling alone, Myrow started GamerWidow.com — a Web site for “gaming’s other half” — in June of 2005 and quickly discovered just how not alone she was.

“By July I had 400 active members and by the end of the year I had one thousand members,” she says.

These days, GamerWidow.com has some 2,000 members who gather in the forums to vent their frustrations and mourn their losses together. Meanwhile, Myrow isn’t the only one who is, ironically enough, using the Internet as means of dealing with the devil it helped deliver into her home.

Jennifer Newberry sounds both discouraged and exhausted when she talks about her husband’s addiction to “WoW,” a game he has, at times, played up to 18 hours a day.

“Before he got into this game he had lots of other interests,” she says. “He was into music and cars, he was active, outdoorsy, he used to hang out with friends. Now he’s agoraphobic and won’t go out of the basement.”

Newberry joined the “WoW” Widows Support Group at Yahoo.com in October of 2005 so she could talk to other people who shared her plight. Back then there were 500 members. Two years later, Newberry has taken over as owner of the group that now includes more than 3,000 members.

“It wasn’t like being in a relationship,” Shelly Quintana says of life with her husband at the height of his gaming addiction, “it was like living with a zombie.”

In March of 2006, Quintana, a New Jersey mother of three, started a Web site called GamingSucks.com and a comic strip called “Widow’s Revenge” in response to her husband’s obsession with the likes of “Ultima Online” and “WoW.” At first, she did it as a way to tease the man she loved and missed. But then, “It just got crazy popular,” she says.

Living with the dead
Certainly video game addiction has been a much-discussed topic in recent months. This summer, a Reno couple was arrested after they let their two children nearly starve to death while they played a role-playing video game. And in June, the American Medical Association considered a proposal to declare video game addiction a formal psychiatric disorder.

Much to many widows’ dismay, the AMA decided against the official designation (at least for the time being), saying it needed further study.

Still, click through the pages of the widow support sites and you’ll find plenty of terrible tales told by those living with players unable to control their habit. There’s the woman whose husband left her in the hospital two hours after their baby was born so he could go home and play. There’s the bed-ridden wife whose husband wouldn’t take care of her because he was so busy gaming.

But it’s the overwhelming number of relatively ordinary tales of loneliness and despair in the wake of a mate’s compulsive gaming that make this phenomenon truly heartbreaking.

The posts in the GamerWidow.com forums frequently sound like this one:
He’s sitting 2 computers away from me, playing WoW. 11 years together, 2 kids and now a $1,000 bill for marriage therapy that’s not really working. I’m done, have been for awhile. It’s not just WoW, before WoW it was Final Fantasy, and before that SOCOM….I’ve been the invisible woman in my home for over 3 years…and honestly I’m done. I deserve a man who wants to spend time with me not his stupid games.

Quintana knows the feeling. She recalls being halfway around the world, visiting family in New Zealand, when she called the husband she hadn’t seen for weeks. But he wasn’t exactly happy to hear from her.

“He said, ‘I’ll have to call you back I’m in the middle of a raid,’ ” she says, referring to the group events that take place within ‘WoW.’ “It was horribly painful.”

And it’s not just women widows out there. There are plenty of men who’ve lost their wives and girlfriends to gaming as well. Writes one widower at GamerWidow.com: I’m a young dad with a little boy and baby girl and a wife who plays a whole lot of WoW…My wife plays during every free hour she has…When the baby wakes up during her afternoon nap, which is one of my wife’s daily time-slots for WOW…she gets seriously pissed off.

“With these MMORPGs, they will swallow almost anybody,” Myrow says, estimating that GamerWidow.com’s membership is split 70 percent women and 30 percent men. “They’re so user-friendly and so appealing to even a non-gamer that pretty much anyone can get sucked into them.”
Humor to help the hurt
“I’ve just come to a point where I don’t care anymore,” Newberry says. “I just kind of live like a single person. It’s a lost cause. I can’t make him change. And there are no rehab centers to send him to. If there were rehab centers I could send him to, he’d be first in line to get in.”

Dr. Hilarie Cash, a Redmond-based therapist and one of the few who specializes in Internet and computer addiction, believes that, in the future, gaming addiction will be declared an official mental disorder. She also believes that 12-step programs to help gameaholics kick their habits will be commonplace. Until then, she says widows have a particularly difficult battle.

“Right now video gaming is sexy and cool and it’s the up and coming fun way to live life,” she says. “So it is very hard to get people to see it for what it is as an addiction.”

Meanwhile, with a dearth of support, the widows deal with their loved ones’ addiction the best they can. Some try to nag their mates into quitting, some beg and plead. Some break game discs, install key loggers, or sabotage the computers all together.

She started drawing the “Widow’s Revenge” strips and posting them to GamingSucks.com as a way to vent her frustrations and poke a bit of fun at gamers and their compulsive behavior.

In one cartoon, a “WoW” addict can’t understand why the electric company won’t take gold from the game as payment after the power to his home gets cut off. In another, a game widow gets all dressed up for date night with her husband only to find that his idea of a date night is playing a two-person video game together.

“Finding some humor in it has really helped,” she says, explaining that her husband is playing less these days. “You get into a rut and you start nagging your spouse and that doesn’t help the situation. Putting humor into it made it less painful for me so I was able to discuss it better with him.”

Gamers don’t get it
Of course, the gamers out there haven’t been entirely understanding of the plight of the widows. Quintana has dedicated a section of GamingSucks.com to show the often vitriolic response her site has inspired.

The “sex spirit.” This is the spirit that is responsible for fornication,
adultery, lust, homosexuality, and every other sexual sin. After all, we
know there has to be some reason so many people commit sexual sin and the
“sex spirit” is the answer. Since sexual sin is something almost everyone
fights at some point in their life, I should actually write a book about the
“sex spirit.” It would sell millions of copies worldwide to people who are
Christians as well as to those who are not. It would actually be a best
seller in the homosexual community and to others who have rejected God’s
plan for sex since it would explain their actions. I could actually take a
few verses here and a few verses there to even make a Biblical case for the
“sex spirit.”

However, there is only one small problem, THERE IS NO SUCH THING!!! I am
sorry to have to tell you this, but there is NO “sex spirit.” It doesn’t
exist. Oh trust me, I know people want it to exist. They want something to
blame their sinful behavior on and blaming it on a “sex spirit” would be
perfect. You see, if there really was a “sex spirit,” then you don’t have to
take responsibility for YOUR CHOICES since it wasn’t you, it was the “sex
spirit” that made you do it.

When you read the Bible cover to cover, one of the things you understand is
that the Bible is a book of personal responsibility. We are personally
responsible for the choices we make in our life. Blaming someone or
something else doesn’t work! Ever since man committed the very first sin in
the Garden of Eden, he has been trying to blame his sin on someone or
something else. Look at Adam. When confronted with his sin by God what did
he do? HE BLAMED GOD AND EVE!!! Like I say so often, we have not changed one
bit since the Garden. But God was not interested in Adam’s excuse and God is
not interested in your excuse either.

I’m not sure if you noticed lately, but God is one smart guy. You see, God
gave us something called “free will.” Free will means we are NOT
pre-programmed robots, but have the ability to make our own choices
throughout our life. The upside to this is that we can choose to do whatever
we want. If you want to be an Adolph Hitler and commit your life to
destroying lives and killing millions of people, you can do it. If you want
to be a Billy Graham and commit your life to preaching the Gospel to the
world and be used by God to bring millions to know Christ as their Savior,
you can do it. Free will means you have the ability to choose to do whatever
you want.

Because God gave man free will, it also means that we are PERSONALLY
RESPONSIBLE for the choices that we make. Now I understand in today’s
society accepting personal responsibility is not popular. We have to always
find a “reason” why people do the things they do. Children that are
hyperactive, have way too much energy, who act like children should are now
told they have ADD or ADHD. While in a percentage of cases there may be a
medical issue that exists, in most cases it is simply an excuse for children
that have not been properly disciplined or are simply just being kids.

No place do we see people making excuses for their choices more than in the
criminal justice system. It is the job of well paid defense lawyers to dream
up excuses to explain away a person’s criminal actions. They have come up
with every reason you can imagine to explain why a person who committed a
crime was not really responsible for their actions. This mentality has
permeated to every part of our society, and finding reasons to explain why
people are not responsible for the choices they make has become an art.

Let me make sure you understand, this may work in the world in which we
live, but it doesn’t work with God. God has given us free will to make our
own choices, but along with that freedom, comes the responsibility for
whatever choices we make. God is not interested in your excuse why you
sinned, only in you taking responsibility for that sin. He has even given us
a wonderful promise in 1 John 1:9 that tells us, if we will confess our
sins, take personal responsibility for our sins, He will not only forgive us
but cleanse us from all unrighteousness. All God wants us to do is to be
honest, not make excuses, and take personal responsibility for the choices
we make.

I love you and care about you so much. I am sorry that there is no “sex
spirit,” or anything else you can blame for sin in that area. God has given
us the choice to either obey Him, or disobey Him. When we choose to disobey
Him, it was not another person, a “spirit,” or anything else we can blame.
It was OUR CHOICE. I will be praying for you today, praying that you will
realize that you have got to be responsible for whatever choices you make in
this life. You, and you alone made those choices, and you, and you alone
have to be responsible for the choices you make.

This is why the moment we die and stand before God, there is only one
question He is going to ask us. It is not what day of the week we went to
church. It is not the name of the building we choose to worship Him in. It
is not how successful you may have been in this life. No my friend, the only
question God is going to ask you is, “Do you have a personal relationship by
faith with my Son Jesus.” You either do, or you don’t. If you do, God will
welcome you into His presence for eternity. If you don’t, you will be
eternally separated from God your Creator. Period.

If you don’t, God is NOT going to be interested in any of your excuses. “Jim
and Tammy had an air conditioned dog house.” The pastor in my church ran off
with the choir director.” “Somebody was mean to me at church.” “Christians
are hypocrites.” “I don’t like Bill Keller.” “All they care about is money.”
” I was a good person.” “The Bible was written by mere men.” “My dog ate my
homework.” No, God is not going to be interested in hearing any of your
excuses for why you rejected Jesus Christ as your Savior. That is a personal
decision each person must make in this life, and each person will be held
responsible by God for eternity for that decision.

If you have not made the decision to accept Christ into your heart and life
by faith, the Bible says that TODAY is the day of salvation. I would invite

Does Rehab Really Work?

Does “rehab” really work?  Like never before, rehab is in the news.  Rehab,
is a critical and serious place for many to find hope, help, and deliverance
from the bondages people become enslaved to during this life.  Lately, it
has been turned into a joke by Hollywood stars who use rehab as a place to
hide when their addictions and poor choices catch up to them and are exposed
to the world.  A few weeks later they emerge, claiming they are “cured” when
nothing has really changed.   So this does raise the legitimate question,
does going to rehab really cure people of their addictions, does rehab
really work?

It is important to understand, there is no magical place to go to be
delivered from an addiction.  That place doesn’t exist.  Please listen to
me.  Nobody will ever be delivered from whatever they are in bondage to
until they want to be delivered.  I have to say this again since this goes
to the very heart of the issues today.  NOBODY WILL EVER BE DELIVERED FROM
WHATEVER THEY ARE IN BONDAGE TO UNTIL THEY WANT TO BE DELIVERED!

Here is another very important truth for you today.  Even God won’t deliver
you unless you want to be delivered and set free.  Why?  Free will.  God
gave you the free will to make your own choices.  You are the one who
chooses to take drugs, drink, smoke, overeat, engage in sinful sexual
activities, shop for things you don’t need, gamble, and anything else that
you become enslaved to.  When YOU are ready to stop, to be set free, God
will be there to strengthen you and help you find the deliverance you seek.
But YOU have to first make the choice to stop and seek the Lord’s help.
Until you come to that place, NOTHING will change.

Please don’t underestimate the “God factor” in people being set free from
their addictions.  IT IS THE KEY once a person decides to seek freedom from
their bondage.  That is why Christ-centered rehab programs have a
dramatically lower recidivism rate than secular rehab programs.  Once you
take your stand and are determined to be free from your addiction, you need
a power greater than yourself to be able to walk in victory day after day,
week after week, month after month, year after year.

The cliche “one day at a time” is real.  For the person who has fought and
won the battle over their addiction, they are acutely aware that the battle
never stops.  The reason people “relapse” or “fall off the wagon” is because
they quit doing the things they need to on a daily basis to walk in victory.
For someone who has been delivered from an addiction, they MUST do the
things they need on a daily basis to live in victory, or they will wake up
one morning back in the jaws of their addiction.

The good thing all rehab programs do is help educate a person about their
addiction.  It helps them to understand the psychological and physiological
factors involved.  It also gives a person the practical tools to live
“clean.”  The greatest of those tools is accountability.  None of us can
walk through this journey of life alone.  We all need others in our life to
guide us, strengthen us, and encourage us along the way.   That is
especially true for someone who is battling to live in freedom from some
addiction.  Having someone in your life to hold you accountable who has
fought the battle and is living in victory over their addiction, is critical
to helping you live in that same victory.

I love you and care about you so much.  The reality is no place or program
will ever work until you are ready to live in freedom from whatever your
bondage may be.  The same free will you use to make the choice to drink, do
drugs, gamble, smoke, overeat, shop for things you don’t need, engage in
sinful sexual activities, or whatever your bondage may be, is the same free
will you have to exercise to make the choice to live in freedom from that
bondage.

When you make that choice to be free, rehab and programs like AA can be very
effective in helping educate you and giving you the basic tools you need to
live your life in freedom.  The critical element at that point in finding
your life again is a relationship with Jesus Christ.  Without Christ you can
be delivered from your bondage and live in freedom .  However, like all who
live without Christ you can never know the true joy, peace, and abundance of
this life, and when this brief journey is over you will be forever separated
from God your Creator in hell.  *There is no rehab or programs to escape
from hell once you die and are there!

By surrendering your heart and life to Christ by faith, you will not only
find freedom from your addiction, but you will find the strength to live a
victorious life each day.  This life is not about just living until we die,
but living in victory and making our lives count.  Without Christ, that is
impossible, with Christ, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!

I will be praying for you today.  If you are currently battling with an
addiction, I pray that you will open your heart today and hear God’s voice
speaking to you through these words  He is telling you that you don’t have
to be a slave to your addiction any longer.  You can be free.  Freedom from
your addiction is only a prayer away!  The fact is your life is a mess right
now, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.  God will help you,
but YOU have to be ready to live in freedom from your bondage.  Ask God to

I will also be praying today for all those who are in rehab or some program
today, trying to be free from whatever has enslaved them.  I pray that they
will open their hearts to the Lord who loves them and wants them to not only
be free from their addiction, but know the true joy, and peace, and
abundance this life can offer through a relationship with Him.  No place or
program will ever work until the person is ready to quit, and no victory
will ever be complete without Christ!

When Evangelizing, Be Led By The Holy Spirit!

So often we are rather brisk and even crude in our witnessing. Because we find it difficult, generally when we do it we are very amateurish. We do it so abruptly and in such a way that often it offends people. We need to be led by the Spirit of God.

I believe that the finest kind of evangelism today is prayer evangelism. I mean that we should begin by praying for an individual. Then the day will come when we need to put legs on the prayer. Ask God to lead you. Friend, I know that He will lead you. If you have been praying for a loved one, or a friend, or a stranger, don’t just go to him in your own strength and in the power of the flesh. If you do, you will fail. Let God be the One to lead you.

When I was a student in college, I was very zealous to be a witness for God, but I was rather timid about it, and, very frankly, I wanted to be sure I had the leading of the Holy Spirit. I didn’t have any money for bus or train fare, so I did a lot of hitchhiking. One time when I was out on the highway, a man in a brand new Model A Ford drove by and stopped fifty yards past me. Then he motioned for me to come on and get in. He said that he always looked over a hitchhiker before he picked one up. He introduced himself and told me he was a salesman for drug companies. He was going all the way to Memphis and he would be glad to take me all the way, but he did need to stop at several drug stores on the way to get his orders from them.

As we rode along, we talked of everything under the sun. Under my breath I was praying, “Lord, I’d like to witness to this man, but You will have to open the door for me. I’m not going to broach the subject because if I do, he’ll think he has some religious nut in the car with him. If I open the door, he will probably open the car door and tell me to get out.” So we rode along some more and just talked and talked.

We got about sixty miles from Memphis and we had run out of conversation. There was a lull, and I was still praying, “Lord, we’re getting near Memphis and there still hasn’t been a door open for me. I’m not going to open it because I’m afraid he’ll throw me out. You open the door for me if You want me to witness.” We rode on for about ten more minutes, and then out of a clear sky he said, “You know, my wife and I went to church yesterday.” He looked at me and laughed, and I laughed. Then he said, “I don’t go very often. But that preacher said the funniest thing. He said Jesus was coming to this earth again. What do you think about that?”

Well, friend, I told him. Then I told him all about the first coming of the Lord Jesus. Finally I said, “The second coming of Christ means nothing to you now. You’ve got to come to Christ and accept what He did for you the first time He came if you are to have an interest in His second coming.” This man was wide open. He drove me to the dormitory where I stayed at the college. He parked there and said, “I want to see you again.” So I just blurted out, “Wouldn’t you like to accept Christ as your Savior?” He said, “I sure would,” I told him he could do that right there in the car. So we bowed our heads in prayer. I prayed and then asked him to pray, and he accepted Christ.

Now I’ll be honest with you, I would never have opened my mouth if the Lord hadn’t prompted him to open up the conversation. We need to be led by the Spirit.

Deliverance from Addiction

Dear Thru the Bible,

Through the last three years that I’ve been listening to Thru the Bible there have been many changes in my life. I was a hard-core drug addict struggling with a life-consuming addiction to methamphetamine, I.V. use. I thank Jesus for the brothers and sisters that He sent into my life to bring me to the foot of the Cross. Of these, one was our dear brother, friend, and teacher J. Vernon, who through solid Bible teaching helped me to have the courage and strength I needed to overcome strong temptation. I’ll always remember I was digging a power trench with an excavator, and I can’t remember exactly where J. Vernon was teaching from, but I was convicted to quit my last addiction: cigarettes. I’ve been clean from meth for three years and from smoking and alcohol for two years and three months. May our Savior Jesus continue His blessings for your ministry.

Emerging from Devastation

Before we began airing Thru the Bible in Tagalog to the Philippines in 2003, our Trans World Radio (TWR) broadcasting partners visited local churches and developed relationships with pastors. This testimony was received from one of those pastors who ministers to our radio listeners in the Bicol Region.

Every year there are 20 to 30 typhoons that visit the Philippines, and half of those will surely hit the land of Bicolandia. Before the year 2006 ended, three successive typhoons…smashed Bicol region and the land was totally devastated. 

During the devastation I had done nothing but pray for God’s mercy and protection for all His people. After the violent winds, heavy rains, and flashing flood stopped, my wife and I decided to roam around the city of Sorsogon to see the damage. My heart was seemingly broken when my very own eyes saw the heartbreaking scenario of the damage. Thousands of families became homeless. Most of them were hopeless on how they would survive from that tragedy. People were seeking a hand that could help them recover. During that time, I did not know what to do to help them. But of course I believe that prayer is and should be the first step towards action. So I extended my prayers for them.

I was amazed with the goodness of God when our brethren from TWR sent financial help for these victims of tragedy. My team and I conducted house-to-house visitation asking of the immediate needs of those families. The following day we returned with something to help them. I cannot forget that day, for I observed how God works in the lives of those people. Along with those helps, we also shared the gospel with them. Most of them accepted Jesus in their lives.

The following Sunday, I was so surprised when many of those people we helped attended our worship service. From then on they became regular attendees in our church. I was also amazed when I came to know that some of those people are avid listeners of Ang Paglalakbay. And so we took the opportunity to start Bible studies in their respective houses. Most of our discussions are related to topics being aired on the program. Praise be to God! Now I do not agree with everything the late Dr. McGee preaches, such as his assertion that Christians cannot be afflicted or tormented by demonic influences. But this shows that even Christians that disagree on certain issues that are not “foundational” can edify one another in areas which they agree!

Chris Benoit: Our Lust For Blood And Death

Our thirst for blood and death.  Late Sunday night and into Monday, came the horrible story of professional wrestler Chris Benoit who in his suburban Atlanta home sometime Friday evening, strangled and killed his wife.  Early Saturday morning, Benoit suffocated his 7-year-old son to death as he lay sleeping in his bed.  Sometime Sunday evening, he went down into his home gym and committed suicide by hanging himself.  Of course the immediate question everyone wants to know is why?  Why does someone who had been a
high profile performer  in the violent world of professional wrestling, aka sports entertainment, all of a sudden snap and kill his wife, son and then himself.

Of course the initial speculation is that this horrible tragedy was caused by “roid rage.”  This is a phenomenon many athletes who use and abuse steroids experience.  When the toxicology reports come back in a few weeks, my guess is it will show not only the use of anabolic steroids, but many other drugs that ended up forming a lethal cocktail that put Benoit in a psychotic state during which time he committed these horrible acts.  In the
violent world of professional wrestling, getting injured is something all of these performers have to deal with.  A professional wrestler is constantly battling different injuries, having their bodies operated on dozens of times, and in the process, end up taking an endless supply of different types of medications.

Those who are part of that world have talked openly about the constant abuse of not only steroids and prescription medication, but also illegal street drugs as well as alcohol.  These “sports entertainers” live in the fast lane of bright lights, cheering crowds, TV cameras, and literally sacrifice their bodies and health for a few moments of fame and a little fortune.  When their brief time in the spotlight is over, what they have left is usually
very little of the money they made, an addiction to drugs and/or alcohol, and broken bodies they will suffer with the rest of their life, and those are the lucky ones!  *In the past decade, 60 professional wrestlers under the age of 45 have died, SIXTY!!!

While those who choose to go into this world of professional wrestling/sports entertainment have got to be accountable for their actions and choices, you can’t talk about this issue without talking about the man who has become a billionaire as the PT Barnum of this violent, bloody, and yes, deadly, athletic soap opera we know as professional wrestling…Vince McMahon.  Like in all entertainment businesses, the performers are often exploited, used, and thrown away, while those who have created the world they perform in become very wealthy.

As the owner and creator of the WWE, a worldwide brand that generates hundreds of millions of dollars annually, McMahon has to be held accountable for what is happening in his business.  Like those who run major league baseball and the team owners turned a blind eye to the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs in the 90s since it was helping make baseball very popular again after the strike in 1994, not to mention making everyone lots of money, McMahon has also turned a blind eye to the use of illegal
performance enhancing drugs in his business.

Since it is not a sport, but sports entertainment, professional wrestling is not regulated in any way other than by itself.  Over the years, their product has become more valuable as the performers got bigger and stronger, with no regard how they got that way.  So while McMahon sits back raking in tens of millions annually in profits, the “entertainment” he is supplying to the world is one of sheer violence, bloodshed, and even death!  Once again,
in the past decade, 60 professional wrestlers under the age of 45 have died. Even though McMahon is only giving the public what they obviously want and crave, he must be held accountable for what is happening to the performers he employs.

This also begs the bigger question,  how far have we really come (or not), from the days of the Roman Coliseum? One of the contentions I have consistently made over the years is that man has never really changed from the Garden of Eden. We read about man’s inhumanity to man as early as the 4th chapter of Genesis in the story of Cain and Abel.  Since man’s fall in the Garden, evil has been part of the human experience and is all around us. It takes on many forms. One of those forms has been evil masquerading as
sport.

Throughout human history, sports, men competing against each other has been part of our world. In the capitalistic world of today, never before has sport become such a huge and lucrative business. It is very rare to find sports being played in its purest form any longer. In 2007 sports at almost every level are guided and ruled by one thing, money. In looking back on the history of sports, there have always been those physical competitions
pitting one man’s strength and abilities against another. Most of these “fighting sports” like wrestling and boxing concluded when one man had an advantage over the other. However, there has always been more violent and brutal forms of fighting that often included weapons. These types of fights would only end when one man killed the other.

We often think back to the days of the Roman Coliseum. The “sporting events” they hosted with capacity crowds in attendance were fights amongst men to the death. As one man would gain an advantage over his opponent, the fight would conclude with the “death shot.” This would literally be one man killing the other to the wild cheers of the crowd. The halftime show at these Coliseum events would include taking men and women, often Christians, and putting them in the ring with a team of hungry lions. Of course, it was
only a matter of time before each met their horrible death in the jaws of the lion, again, as the crowd cheered on. Of course we look at those days and say how barbaric, how inhumane, who could find any pleasure in seeing such brutality and death?

Well, the answer to that is WE WOULD!  My friend, we humans have an incredible capacity to hurt others. Sadly, we see it every day here at Liveprayer. Most do it in non-violent ways. Selfishly leaving your spouse and often your children after many years of marriage. Saying things that we know will hurt someone. Making decisions that inflict pain in people’s lives. There are endless ways man inflicts heartache and pain on others. Why
do people love to commit the sin of gossiping so much? They love to hear of others pain. Why do we drive by a car accident and have to slow down to look? We have this morbid curiosity with seeing others in pain.

The fact is, most people don’t love their neighbor nor do they “do unto others.” That is why those who follow these admonitions from the Lord stand out. It is not normal in this fallen world to love others as you love yourself. It is not normal in this fallen world to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. These principles go against the grain of how the world lives and teaches people to live. This world teaches people to love themselves above all, to put themselves first at all times. This world teaches to do unto others before they do unto you. It is the law of the jungle, kill before you are killed. So with this being the prevailing mindset of how the world lives, it is no wonder man has no real capacity to love or care for other men. That mindset transcends even to the “sports”
they watch to entertain themselves.

I love you and care about you so much. Professional wrestling is only a microcosm of where we are as a people, but I believe a very telling one. It only demonstrates that our desire to be entertained by watching men suffer now becoming a mainstream form of entertainment, is simply further proof of how far our society and culture has deteriorated. It is also further proof of how far away we are from God. We no longer even try to hide our gross sexual perversion or our debauchery. We no longer have any shame or guilt
and curse those who remind us of our sins. We live in open and defiant rebellion to the God of the Bible, His Truth and have rejected the love of Jesus in our lives.

We escape through the use of alcohol, drugs, gambling, deny our flesh nothing as we feed it with pornography and illicit sex of every kind imaginable, and find entertainment in seeing men brutalized and killed. Oh, now more than ever this lost world needs to turn to Jesus. He is the only answer and hope. I realize that the world doesn’t want to hear about the Lord, but we see every day the destroyed lives of people who are looking for hope. That is why we do this each day. Fight to reach as many as we can through the Internet. Fight to reach as many as we can through the TV program. Look for new ways to reach the lost masses. I know there are people who are looking for a better life, who are tired of living in sin, who do yearn for real peace and joy. That is why with every breath I have, I will keep doing all I can to reach them with the hope and love of Jesus!

Please pray today for those you know who may find professional wrestling entertaining. They have bought into the lies of this world that it is acceptable to enjoy watching men brutalize each other. Like drugs, and alcohol, and sex, and gambling, once their appetite for such violence is whetted, they will need to see more brutality, more violence to satisfy
their cravings. Ultimately, only seeing men die in the name of sport will satisfy them. This is not a fad that will go away. It is not only here to stay, but will evolve into more brutal forms as the years go by. Ultimately, like in all things, the only real answer is to see the hearts of men changed by the power of God. Changed from hearts that seek to view their neighbor destroyed, to hearts that seek to love their neighbor as their selves.
