Earnestly Contending For The Faith Once Delivered To The Saints Jude 1:3

Does An Accurate Translation Of Luke 2:14 Support Calvinist Predestination?

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” Though other translations exist of Luke 2:14 exist (http://bible.cc/luke/2-14.htm), the most influential one, and the one that has basically been common vernacular for centuries by virtue of all the Christmas poems, plays, etc. have been influenced by the King James Version translation above. It just so happens that I was watching the NRB network (or it might have been TCT) on Sunday, and I saw this Presbyterian Bible scholar assert that when the King James version was written, the earliest manuscripts of that portion of Luke were not available. He then stated that the manuscript that was used was missing a single letter at the end of the sentence. That letter changes the entire meaning from the commonly known one derived from the King James Version to one in some of the other translations, such as this from the New American Standard Bible: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” Now, this fellow stated (before withdrawing from it because he did not want to cause unnecessary dissent) that the accurate translation indicated that Yeshua HaMashiach came only to bring peace between God and His Elect; those predestined to salvation. Now I must admit, even a King James Version loyalist like myself must admit that this translation based on the newer manuscript is extremely helpful, because it opposes universalism; the claim that everyone – or at least all “good people” according to whatever humanistic notion is prevailing at any place and time calls you “good” despite Jesus Christ Himself saying that only God was good – will be saved. Nonetheless, I will oppose his interpretation that favors predestination after the manner of friendly engagement between members of the Body of Christ with my own beliefs, which affords man a degree of free will: this verse was a prophecy of sorts, declaring that God’s good will shall be bestowed upon all those who through faith alone accept Yeshua HaMashiach as their personal savior and endure to the end (Matthew 10:22) in loving God by keeping His Commandments. Yeshua means “God saves” or “salvation”, and the prophet Joel said that all who call upon His Name shall be saved (Joel 2:32), and we know that the words of a true prophet, the Word of God, does not return void (Isaiah 55:11). For such person, the war between God and sinner shall be ended because his sins will be forgotten. There will be peace between that person and God on earth and in Heaven, and on the day of judgment, that person’s name shall be found in the Book of Life written from the foundation of the world, and be with God forevermore.
